So I browse eBay as a hobby (at work, I'm sure the my boss loves me for that). And I've been checking out 40k stuff on eBay for years. Recently I've noticed a venerable flood of old RT and 90's era metals on the lists. I wonder why that. Vets checking out of 40k for good. Selling stuff to buy newer stuff.

Seriously, Necromunda Farseer - check, Guardian w/Lascannon - check, Eldar Musician - check, old weapon platforms, metal warwalkers & dreads, RT Harlies - en masse, moar than I ever remember seeing. Anyone else notice, have any thoughts

I sell a lot on ebay. I have found that because of the finecast debacle that metal minis have become very popular again. Even the older ones. I don't think we are seeing a mass exodus from the hobby, just some guys moving their collections around a bit.

On the plus side a lot of the harder to find minis have seen a decline in price. Good time to be a buyer.

Harlies have been absolutely flooding ebay the past 6 months or so, same with Genestealer Hybrids. I don't quite get it either. A lot of them are priced pretty high, too, despite the obvious surplus.

I got some of the old Bloodletters for next to nothing a few months ago, hoping and waiting for someone to put up the throned Genestealer Patriarch for cheap.

On a completely unrelated note, the older (and less detailed) a model is, the easy it is to recast in a basement.

Remember how many armorcast warhounds were "discovered" when apocolypse came out? More than were ever produced...

I'm buying a casting kit soonish (for entirely legitimate, personal use) but when I do I'm going to make a bunch of casts of my RT figures (and any I aquire in the future) and secretly dump them in the cheap secondhand mini boxes at my FLGS.

All I know about eBay is I'm sick of the idiots who list models as new when they're painted.

The question isn't why do I kill. The question is, why I don't kill everybody.

I say its a sign of the economic times. People trying to get rid of the stuff they just don't absolutely need. Squeegeeing money into coffers where ever they can.

Aye I got 2 zoanthropesfor £8.50 each. That's a reasonable price. The £17 or whatever they're charging for failcast is beyond a joke but it also helps to buy second hand. For metals it's fine - plastic not as much

Have to admit I've been shedding a lot of stuff to help me through the end of my phd. Down to the stuff I really like now but stuck in a tough place.

On the other hand, I've done very well out of a few pre-slottas. Do the research, list the item details correctly and you'd be surprised.

RT had some great times... Too bad GW doesn't know that anymore.

You are correct. People are leaving "The Hobby". There are seriously too many choices out there to be tied down with GW and thier musical chairs way of doing business when they comeout with figures you can't use anymore.

I'm sure you can provide a comprehensive list of models that can't be used at all anymore. You do realize that they've made new rules for a bunch of stuff right? Including things that haven't been in the Warhams since the 1990's.

Your list -might- be longer than the list of games that crashed and burned for being bad or put out by bad companies. (AT43, Warzone, Shockforce, Confrontation etc)

Um, right, because we all keep those kind of lists around. However, Genestealer hybrids and cultists, Squats, Legions of the Damned, Fratris Militia, slaan, and Adeptus Arbites spring to mind.

No one is saying that there aren't alot of games that haven't crashed and burned, however the fact is that GW has "squated" quite a number of figures, units and whole armies over the years and booted them out of mainstream 40k play. Some of which exist semi-officially in Forgeworld and other sources and some of which are completely out of the game. The kick is that it doesn't have to be that way, they could simply release a WD codex with each new edition for the forgottens which would prove they valued gamers and not just the bottom line.

Further proof that it doesn't have to be this way, consider that Battletech has been around as long as 40k. Care to guess how many battletech units have been removed from the game?

Or for fantasy, Dogs of War, Chaos Dwarves (yes, forgeworld are doing some fancy resin stuff but it's not he same as a whole army with the hobgobilns), do Kislev have rules now? And the various other races that are no long represented.

Aye, its been a great time to both sell and buy. I've recently cleared out a lot of old models - Man O'War, RT era marines and Imperial Agents, Squats, 3rd/4th Edition Empire and so on.

I've also been bulking out my ancient RT Necromundian Imperial Guard - bought a new unopened blister of penitents for £12, 3 complete jetbikes for a fiver, loads of troopers for cheap. I've seen a refreshing decline in ebay scrapers picking up stuff and re-listing at stupid prices - definitely a lot of genuine collectors trading at the moment.

I know this weekend I'm going barhopping tonight and shooting on Sunday. Between beer and ammo that's $100 that GW won't see. Good to have more than one hobby!

Mostly a bad economy. I see it every day in my store, with 3-6 people walking in and wanting to sell things. Used to be maybe once a week.

To add on Didn't RT have Zoats...Lizard centaur things... Yeah GW has axed alot of stuff over the years, and this is without going individual units and characters within some armies that have been axed.

It's all but confirmed Forge World are doing a complete Chaos Dwarf list (we have concept art for Bull Centaurs and Hobgoblins).

At my store, people are picking up TCGs like yugioh, due to the fact a tier one deck only costs $30-$60 to make, as opposed to the cost to start a new army. Honestly, I acquired both realms of chaos books, a collection of all the chaos army books for fantasy, and all of the WHFB daemons for about $160, I mean full units of troops and elites, enough to make an army, because he wanted to get rid of them so he could start playing magic the gathering.

At my store, people are just dropping armies like flies. 500 bucks worth of IG for 100 bucks....

Kinda makes it difficult to justify leaving myself with so many deals. But now with the hits of so much recession....

nah.

Interesting. People only selling their older stuff when they quit the hobby. That's quite an ascertation.

Couldn't be at all possible that at least some of them, as mentioned by Mikhaila, are freeing up some cash by flogging the more collectible or their collection...

But no, clearly all an exodus...

There is no decline in profits. Sales are up. There has been no exodus. The dogs of the other companies flee before our models. Finecast is brilliant and perfect. The minis of other companies are lumpy and misshapen, and their molds shatter. The Warjacks of Privateer Press and the TAGs of Corvus Belli are lost in the desert. They cannot read compass.

In all seriousness, I unfortunately cannot speak to anyone but my circle of friends. Shortly before I moved we all migrated to Warmachine and a couple of us also picked up Dystopian Wars. We haven't bought any GW since then and have played maybe one game of WHFB. Around here there seem to be at least as many Warmahordes players as WHFB/40K players. I have to wonder what that looked like six months ago, but I guess I'll never really know.
