As the title says, I am wanting to sculpt a trenchcoat for an IG sized model and I would like to find some how-to's or hear some tips from people who have done this. Thanks!

It all depends on what you are doing. I was lazy, and converted a tank-crew feller to be on legs (gave bim bionics). Then, because I was satisfied with his jacket's back, all I did was incorporate two panels of GS to extend the jacket below the belt-line, and added a belt. I also added a thick collar. I was satisfied with the jacket shoulders, using the unadorned tank-crew stuff works fine, and then I just added extra material around the cuff, and called it a day. Just look at trench-coats from all angles, IRL, and notice where the panel seams are, and how the jacket folds. replicate as best as you can. Don't necessarily go for the frogging that you might see on an officer jacket, that can come later with practice. Lastly, don't forget the passants on either shoulder.
most importantly: be patient.

Thanks, I am sculpting a female commisar-type model, from scratch, as of now, she's about a head taller than normal IG, she's got super-high heels though, so that will account for a bit of the hight. I don't have any IG models at home with trench coats to get details from. This is my fist IG-type model ever. I recently bought the 5 man cadian pack, just to have some around for scale purposes, they are not here yet, but they won't have trench coats anyway. I've seen tutorials here, I just can't find them.

ah, any prior experience with sculpting?
In that case, get the body outline you want first. sketch out what you want to make, that way, theres a plan to adhere to. It works better if you have something to reference as you work.
And since this is a commissar.... youre a bit screwed, so you'll need a bit of frogging, or at least a trim on the coat. You can do taht really simply, not even bothering with any loops and whorls, just get some stripes down to make it look shmancier. If you feel like torturing yourself though.......... which i hope you dont..... google -> images -> "Bocskai".
If you are having trouble, I forgot which miniatures company produces them, but they have a very decent female officer head with cap. I am more than confident someone will know what im talking about

I'm no expert when it come to sculpting, but I've done a bit, mostly with conversions. However, this is definately an ambitious project for me. But I want to have fun with it. I already have quite a bit done on her: lower abdomen, butt, and a leg. It's slow going because when I try to do too much at once, I always grab a hold of a soft part and have to re-do it, and I hate that. I'll get some pics up soon, I'll start a WIP thread this weekend or Monday. I just wanted to find some inspiration while at work.
I think I found what I needed in the way of IG trench coat done by Ailaros here at Dakka:
As for "Bocskai", not exactly what I was looking for. I'm wanting to have her dressed almost like a Dominatrix, with a leather corset, high leather boots, German-style Officer cap, and a trench coat buttoned just under her breasts, allowing for alot of cleavage. (hey, I'm a dirty old man, what can I say?)
And yes, I plan to put alot (hopefully) of detail on the coat and cap and boots (I am hoping to be able to sculpt laces all the way up the boots, but we'll have to see about that) and corset.
Thanks for your feedback Poda_t, I'll post a link on this thread when I start the WIP thread.

Yep, I should started with one of those!
Oh well, I'm coming along pretty well with the scratch build.
Also, I would like to see what you have for great coats! When it comes to reference material, too much is never enough.

Heh, saw the title and figured I'd recommend Ailaros. You found his minis, I'm assuming that includes all his tutorials too, right? Just in case not, and for anyone else's reference, Ailaros has a bunch of tutorials/detailed build logs in the P&M section and on his own site.

@Zefig Yep, I had seen his stuff on here quite a while ago, and couldn't find it, so I made this thread, and then found it later. But I'm glad I made the thread, I've gotten more ideas alread!
@Jollydevil Wow! That guy has some SICK conversions! I'll have to look through that blog more! And I hadn't thought about making a paper template, I may have to try that.
@AustonT Thanks, I hope you can find them!
Also, I have the pictures of my progress so far, and I will be making a Work in Progress thread as soon as I repaint the bathroom...hopefully tomorrow...I hear the wife calling right now and I am typing as fast as I can before she gets "grouchy"! When I get the WIP thread up, I'll link it here.
Till later, thanks for the info and inspiration!
Cheers!

@Capitansolstice yeah, I tried to make bat-like wings for a Chaos Raptor a while back...I thought I really made it thin, but it was too thick. I'm really going to have to work on it to thin it out.
I have started my WIP blog: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/394917.page
I am pleased with how she is turning out so far, I haven't started on the trench coat yet, but soon I hope. Take a look and let me know what you think.
Thanks!

@AustonT: Thanks! Those images will help! I can get all the images of actual trenchcoats I want, but seeing how they really drape and fold and wrinkle, doesn't help much when you are working with GS, that is a whole other animal, so it helps to see how others have done it. Thanks again, and check out my WIP thread! I am ALMOST to the point where I will be using this info!
