Hey,

I just ordered the Commander and am wondering what would be the best config for him weapon wise.
i was thinking a power weapon and plasma pistol.

That's a pretty solid choice, HONAW.

You'll get the +1 attack for the pistol/Power Weapon combination and power weapon attacks are always nice at I5.

A bolt pistol with the power weapon is cheaper, and you don't have to worry about the Gets Hot rule. You would give up the S7SP2 plasma pistol shot, though.

Lightning claws are nice because you get to re-roll wounds. You just don't get the +1 attack with a pistol. The only lightning claw I have on a commander also has a Storm Shield, since you won't get the extra attack anyway. Also, 3+ Inv saves are great!

I'm not a fan of putting a thunder hammer or a power fist on an I5 character. Dropping to I1 just seems like a waste. You will be more likely to hit with the weapon than a simple Sergeant, though.

Just my 2 cents.

I like the lightning claw and storm shield but I think I would like a a ranged and cc setup so I can fire into the enemy before I commit into cc as he does have good ranged and cc skills.

You can actually give him two lightning claws and an auxiliary grenade launcher. Or any two weapons and the grenade launcher. It's a shooting attack that doesn't require the absence of any other weapons. Taking it would give you a versatile shooting attack before melee.

Not legal.

You can't take a pistol if you take Terminator Armor.

Personally I take the power weapon and the combi-melta. But that's just me.

No worries, man. While you're there, look through the options a captain is allowed and think up a combination you would have fun with.

Also, after you pick your first captains wargear, you'll have plenty of bits left over to add to another, or make some excellent veterans.

Be sure to post painted pictures in the painting/modeling area.

Ok....I like lightning claws...partly because I dont have any and they sound like they play awesome. When I get him next week I will be painting in time for my big battle with 2 other people and i am teaming up with IG against Tyranids...I cant wait!
I think I will have one lighting claw storm shield and aux grenade launcher. I am going to check my codex to see if thats legal though.

It's ok, it's a common syndrome on the internet, even among well informed people. My favorite Captain loadout (which costs a metric asston) is this:

Captain - 195
Relic Blade
Artificier Armor
Storm Shield
Bike

He is tough as nails, has 3 S6 PW attacks at WS6 and a 2+/3++ save set...but he does cost a boat load of points...

I'd go captain Relic Storm shield - in fact I'd just take vulkan as he's better for cheaper points and can give TL weapons..

Yeah...but I would need a special list to take advantage of him though.

How about this:

Relic Blade
Storm Shield
Artificer Armor
Auxiliary Grenade Launcher

You can give him a Bike or a Jump Pack if you want.

If you take:

Relic blade
Storm shield
Artificer armor
Auxiliary grenade launcher

Then you have the option of either a jump pack, giving him the option to move with assault marines or he can take a bike which gives him a faster speed, +1 touchness and a twin linked bolter on the bike as well.

I like a combi-melta and a relic blade. Keeps him versatile without going too expensive. Just keep in mind that the commander box only has one lightning claw, so you'll need to find another if you wanted to run a captain with a pair.

Man...lots to think about...I am mainly going up against my friends Nids. I dont really like the grenade launcher because I believe that would be unreliable. We will see.

Depends. Does he play Horde or Nidzilla?

Hm... What kind of army are you using? Against Nids I'd take a lot of templates and a few Missile Launchers. The MLs can be useful against the monstruous creatures and the flamers can take out a lot of Nids at the time. Taking a Captain with a combi-flamer is looking like a good idea now.

The auxiliary missile launcher is great when facing hordes and tougher creatures. You can easily threaten wounds before CC on his MC's and cause multiple deaths before CC with hordes.

I have....1 standard battleforce of Marines, 1 Librarian, 1 Rhino,
1 Dreadnought, 1 terminator squad.

I am working up to building a Taskforce list.

You need more troops; getting Assault on Black Reach (or at least getting the Marine half for real cheap from a site like urbanvikings.com) will let you get that Terminator squad to 10 man strength or let you upgrade two small 5 man squads, give you another tactical squad, plus another dreadnought. The captain in the box can be converted with the leftover bits from the commander box. Trust me, you'll have plenty of bits left over!

I will get more troops then....I have a friend who is getting rid of his marines which is another battleforce, command squad, 2 landspeeders, 1 vindicator, 1 Rhino, and a Devestator squad.

My 2 cents...

Don't forget that you might also play against me (horde orks) and a foot guard list.... That means, if you want to make a list geared towards your opponents (which isn't always a good thing) then you're going to want as many templates as you can throw. Like others have said, missile launchers are going to be nice, as well as extra attacks in CC. You'll also expect quite a few attacks, so a higher save would be nice.
