I know I am getting a lot of shots especially in rapid fire but I feel like I hardly ever get past anyone's 4T on to wound or the Armor Save that follows.

Yes I do well with my plasmas and my meltas but I feel like I could be doing more.

Seeing my 30 man blob be whittled down to 12 on the 3rd volly and finally finishing off a Tac Marine squad I feel like I lost the engagement...

Should I be running Flamers at the front?

Adding GL in a SW team to the back?

What I am trying to say is Needs more Dakka!!!

Balance. If you have a seriously huge amount of cheap troops, you can't give them all effective attacks.

I run my tactical squads upgraded, and they wind up costing 200-215 points without a transport. If you then take 150 points of guardsmen and blow them off the board, I certainly won't have won the fight.

I feel like they are there as meat shields for the guys with the big guns. That's what my bro does with his SM devastators he packs them full of fall guys and sits in range and unloads for the whole game or till a tank rolls by.

Well yeah, but that's just how Guard works. Lots of cheap expendable troops to shield troops with better guns.

To be fair though, weight of fire from 50 odd lasguns will drop a lot of good squads. Seems bad when you think about firing 5 squads at one to drop it, but think about it - forcing that many saves on a Hammernator squad and dropping it? Good use of your lasguns.

Yea. Generally. These are not units you use like a howitzer...more like a bead blaster.

The lasguns are really just icing on the cake against Marines.

Also, before you feel too terrible about how your lasguns are faring, compare the cost of your blob of Guardsmen against the cost of the Tactical squads you're shooting up. If you're going light on upgrades your blob really shouldn't cost too much more than a Tactical squad and if you're finishing the engagement with 40% of your troops left I'd say that's a win.

Oh, and wait until you play against something like Orks or Tyranids, that's when lasguns go from nuisance to dangerous.

You are not paying points for lasguns, rather you are paying points for extra wounds on your heavy weapons. Lasguns are just a red herring, like Communism...

How else are you going to put your lascannons in the middle of the open with perfect firing lanes while still benefitting from 4+ cover?

Get a Commissar, get multiple power weapons into the unit and charge that Tac squad!

Well done Jackster, you beat me to it.

If you are standing off marines and shooting them with Lasguns you are doing it wrong.

Guard win by weight of numbers and/or hidden power weapons.

I tend to arm my blobs thus for an all-comers list (although many have their own versions):

2x infantry squads blobbed + 2 power weapons for the sergeants + 2 meltaguns + commissar with power weapon. Sometimes I will also include a pair of autocannons to have the option of standing off against Mech/Deamon Ponces.

Against Marines you should be charging if you can. True they will do a few wounds but the many many S3 guard plus Power weapons will cut your brothers Brothers to pieces. I bet he won't even see it coming and even when you charge he will still wrongly have faith in his power armour. Making their eventual defeat all the more sweeter.
There are many threads on this subject just search on Powerblob. Good luck mate.

HIDING IN THE METAL BAWKSES!!

Consider this:
A Tac Squad shooting at you at rapid fire range would have two bolter shots each, which ignores your armor. Plus whatever special/heavy weapon they may have.
Now in CC, they are just one attack each (leader has two), you get your armor (Better than nothing lol).
This drastically decrease the number of losses you would take and if you have multiple power weapons it gets better.

IG do damage through their heavy/special weapons. Anything that the lasguns do on top of that is simply icing on the cake.

Provided you don't expect the lasguns to do anything during any given game, you'll always be surprised when they do something

@ Jackster

True, but then who cares about losses?

This is the Guard, blood is our currency. So long as we get all of theirs who cares how many men we have to feed into the meatgrinder?

As we say in the Guard: blood for the blood g.......Corpses for the corpse god? No thats not it either?

Damn, now they'll declare me renegade again!

Totally...

I've seen my last guardsman take out a Terminator singlehanded with a lasgun, if the dice are rolling well anything is possible. If 50+ dice are rolling well...

Lasguns bad? I'd take three shots from a lasgun over a single bolter shot anyday, causing more saves means more stuff dies.

Tau fear Guardsmen above anything else. that many marker lights has to be for something...

seriously, Lasguns are dangerous weapons in large numbers simply because they force saves. it takes 18 shots, on average, to drop a Space marine(18 shots, 9 hit, 3 wound, 1 failed 3+ save)

Thats on average. if you add FRFSRF, you roll better then average, or he rolls below average for his armor saves, then you end up with quite abit of damage that gets done.

that said, the lasguns arn't what you need to do the killing. thats what meltaguns, lascannons, and all that ordinance is for.

I never expect my Lasguns to do anything, but when you have one guy, fire a Laspistol at a Terminator and it kills it, feels good man, feels real good. I feel the same with my IG in CC. I had my Commissar with a Power Sword (Axe) 1 on 1 with a Terminator attacking with a Power Fist. I caused a single Wound forcing his 5+ invul... he rolled a 5 and proceeded to punch my Commissar into the ground but man, these are the moments I play the game for.

Definitely playing Saturday... sick of fighting my friends Space Puppies though.
