Njal is great but I found that if I had gotten to go first in any one of my 3 games, yes I went 2nd in every one, I would have done better. Also, with the 1st mission giving 500 free points to who ever goes first, essentially, then Bjorn is an excellent choice. Thoughts? I have a Loganwing list I have been kicking around as well.

i likes the bjorn list. More mans with very similar firepower to the njal list. looks to be pretty nasty. I play wolves as well but i never much delve into either the wolf banner or wulfen upgrades. just out of curiosity what do you like about them/ how do you find them to be effective? Also do you have any love for wolf scouts? i bring em in just about every game and they do me good. The Wulfen and banner really help to buff the Grey Hunters close combat abilities. Without them, and counterattack, they are just Chaos Space Marines. The difference is that with MotW you get d6+1 (+2 on the charge) rending attacks per turn. The banner allows you to re-roll ALL rolls of a 1 for an entire round of combat. Wulfen attack rolls, to-hit, to-wound, and Armor Saves of 1 all re-rollable. It is pretty great.

ok i think i'm sold on the banners. next time i try something besides the blood claws horde i'll definitely be working them in

I'd go with Njal or Bjorn, either one. I chose Njal on the poll because I have a soft spot for him and I think Bjorn gets a little worse the bigger the armies get where Njal gets a little better, but that's just me. Both your Bjorn and Njal lists would do quite well I think.

Whichever you choose, could you make sure to post a tournament report? I won't be making it to the semis this year due to money and a tight schedule so I have to live vicariously through others! Next year perhaps, if I qualify.

Edit: For your Njal list, you might consider dropping a Speeder to put another Grey Hunter in each pack along with the Power Weapons. I think the extra punch on your scoring units will be a bigger benefit than a third Land Speeder considering how much ranged support the list already has, and the missions.

I think if I do take the Njal list again I will be dropping a speeder and the second Rune Priest and adding a Wolf Priest and a 6th smaller GH squad that can ride in one of the LF RBs. That will give me 6 troops in that list and one GH squad that can handle itself a little better in CC.

I will make sure to post up something, if I post it on my Blog Aldarion I will make sure to throw a link up here on Dakka so you can see it too. I am leaning towards the Bjorn or Logan lists atm but who knows. Game Empire Pasadena is closed this week while they move three blocks west to their new and bigger store so getting practice in may be tough. I am going to try my best to further play test the Bjorn and Logan lists though.

Im not sure why your keeping track of kill points. There is only a 33% chance of a kp game in one mission. The more you have the harder it will be to win on victory points. I recommend not running logan. I am favoring the njal list as the three deployments are pitched battle, pitched battle, and spearhead. Shooting will win this years ard boyz!

I agree that shooting will win, but doesn't the Logan list have more shooting? Even if there is only a 33% chance of there being KPs I still need to know how many KPs each list has the potential of coughing up so I can work to mitigate having so many KPs as soon as I know what the mission is.

My opinion stnads. Njal or Bjorn. I'm not at all a fan of Loganwing lists, even in the style you have taken. You are basically using Wolf Guard as Grey Hunters but with 4 Missile Launchers in each pack (12 total). Assuming you take a Bolter on all of them, they have exactly the same number of attacks in combat and exactly the same shooting capability aside from the missiles, but they cost 3 points more per model. You are basically spending 270 points for 4 Missiles. You could get a pack of Grey Hunters in a Razorback and a Land Speeder Typhoon for less than that and while you would lose a single long ranged anti-tank shot, you would gain a Meltagun. Just seems like a poor choice, even if it is a bit harder to kill off the missiles in your list.

Hmmm... Good points all around. I may need to rethink the Loganwing possibility.

If you really want to run the missile spam army, consider Black Templars rules. They can take 2x Cyclone Launchers in a 5 man Terminator unit, and units of 3 Land Speeder Typhoons for 210 points. Dave Fay plays a list like that down here at the San Diego Game Empire and it's pretty brutal. I've got a win, a loss, and a draw against that list he runs, and I had to fight for the win and the draw, while my loss was pretty crushing. He came in 4th at 'Ard Boyz with that list and I passed my spot to him in the semi-finals, so you should see it this Saturday.

Alright Aldarionn here is the update. Dave Fay got 2nd btw if you hadn't already heard.

I took the Bjorn list.

I got the 1st round bye which sort of sucked. In my second round game Bjorn got me the first turn against an Eldar player, he deployed 2 squads of Rangers 10man and 5man all his wave serpents and Falcons were in reserve. I killed off both ranger squads with massive amounts of wounds from Frag Missiles by turn 2. By turn 5 he had 1 troops choice left, Bjorn was dead, and I had 3 GH squads still, but they had been pulled away from the objective and there were a bunch of immobilized Rhinos and Razorbacks blocking my own guys. I immobilized all but 2 of my vehicles on terrain, the 2 that weren't immobile were the only vehicles my opponent managed to wreck. He moved flat out onto the objective his turn 5 and the game ended. If it had gone to 6 I had 12 missile shots, 3Las/6PG, two dreads, and 3 squads of GH with which to take the objective away from the 1 squad in Wave Serpent but it wasn't to be Minor loss.

The final round I played a Logan list that wasn't very optimized. It had Logan LF Pod Bomb, WGT in LRC, 3 MSU of GH in RB with HB, Canis/5TWC and a maxed out squad of Fenrisian Wolves. I got 1st turn but he seized. His pod came in and shook a Razorback and took a TLPG off another. The entire LF squad was killed with shooting I then chargedvLogan with a Dread and Bjorn, Logan took 3 turns to die to Bjorn but he did. The massive amount of fire power my list put out was too much for his list. The TWC were whittled down to far to be effective and his WGT all died to a massed round of shooting after their LRC got popped by one of the Speeders. I really like the TML/MM load out for speeders. Oh, we rolled KPs for the mission objective I got a ton, he got 5.

Anyways, I am really hoping Random Game Length will be gone next edition.

Haha, but of course I would say that.

Bjorn scales well to any points value so long as you build your list around him. His reroll to go first goes hand in hand with an Alpha strike shooting army. I have a link to an article I wrote about using the Old Man in my sig if anyone is interested.

I like your list but it feels a bit unoptimized to play Bjorn, IMO. I tried using squads of Grey Hunters too, and found Njal or just plain Rune Priests work better in those lists.

Bjorn goes great when you just max out shooting power. The dreads help provide counter punch and more firepower and the grey hunters exist only to take objective and jump into the fight when things get desperate. Mainly they cruise around in Razorbacks shooting stuff.

I think if you focused the list a bit more on shooting, you would have better results, but that's just my opinion. As I always tell people, play what works for you. If you find that taking large squads of Grey Hunters gives you more punch, then rock it.

I like taking lots of small, mobile shooty units as that way I can keep all my units close to one another for mutual support. Rune Priests with storm caller, dreads for counter assault, and typhoons, razorbacks, and long fangs to do the heavy lifting. Works well for me, but YMMV.

Congratz on making it to semis! That is quite the accomplishment.

Thanks Reece. The only reason I don't take all MSU GH in RB is because they never work well for me. I like a bit of a mixture since I tend to fail a lot of cover saves and have most of my tanks dead fast, leaving the small 5 man squads flapping in the breeze. I get where you are coming from though so I may try that out. I am going to pick up a ticket for Comikaze this week, if still available, and will either be bringing Wolves or Draigo GK. If I bring Wolves I am thinking Bjorn or Njal (I used him at BAO).

You want 6 scoring units not just 5(you actually want more but I am pretty sure this is the SW limit.) for the missions which has been hinted at but explicitly stated.
This is the main change I would want otherwise nice lists.

I think I like list 2 the best though list 1 is very close in my opinion.

Those lists are unimaginative and generic, and for my money I think Blood Angels does them better. Perhaps that is one of the reasons I tend to favor Njal. He uses full units and tends to be much better with an aggressive army, which suits me better than Bjorn. Obviously it worked for you though, and I cannot argue with results.

Overwatch, thank you for the update! What was your overall standing?

I think above 20 but below 10. The TO and I guestimated close to 12-15. We were tired and had to break down the venue and move all the terrain, tables, boards back to the new GE since we had to have it off site thanks to the Pasadena Fire Department. We figured we'd only need to find out my exact standing if a bunch of people declined to go to the finals.

Well that's not bad then....especially out of 40. Well done!
