Hi guys,

I am moving to Sacramento in January and I am thinking of starting 40k as a new hobby and way to meet new people and make friends. I am picking up the rule book when I get my next paycheck and I hope to start building an army so that by the time I move I am able to play with a 1000 point army at least. I have been looking online and it seems like great escape is the main place to play and I am also curious how many people show up at A1s game nights.

I used to play TCGs but I found the constant releases, secondary market and the overall player environment to be petty with people willing to steal and cheat to make a profit. 40K seems like a fun game that I won't regret investing time and money into. The game and its players seem more mature as a whole. So I will be on here trying to learn as much as I can about the game and hopefully make friends that I can connect and play with when I move.

A lot of people are going to knock Great Escape tournaments because on Comp and what not. My reply is that if you want to learn from the best in that area you go there. They are absolutely brutal when I've flown in to play, but the skills learned, and the people you play against is all hardcore.

And yes the people that game that play casual as well. The sacto area has a strong war gaming community. And so does the central valley.

And welcome to Dakka.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

Nor Cal

Hi and Welcome.

Sacramento has a huge war gaming community of players, events and stores. As I happen to work for Great Escape Games I can say without a doubt you will not be disappointed by the players, environment nor volume of events held at our store. We're currently running six WarHammer 40K tournaments a year and six Warhammer Fantasy events each year as part of an escalation tournament cycle. There are also six team tournaments each year for both fantasy and 40K held at the shop. Our store is roughly 11,000 square feet which allows us to easily accommodate 80-90 players without table space concerns. We're also home to the annual S.A.W.S. Challenge Indy GT (warhammer fantasy) and the 1st and 3rd rounds of Ard Boys'. Our tournament cycle restarts in January with a 4 game, 1,250 point Warhammer 40K tournament. Our final events of the year for 40K are a 2,500 point event held in November and a 1,000 point team tournament on December 18th. I'm sure you'll be able to find any number of players for pickup games once you've arrived in town.
