For my birthday earlier this month, I became the owner of an X-box 360, so far I've picked up:

Gears of war,
COD 4 (The first MW),
COD world @ war,
And one called "Darksiders"

I've played the CODs before, and Gears is ok, I'm disappointed with Darksiders, the gameplay (at least in the first bit) isn't as dark or textured as the game art seems to suggest - Frankly, I've seen better graphics on PS2 games.

What other games would be a good purchase for a relatively new gamer?
(I have played Space Marine around a friend's house, and I might pick it up when it gets cheaper)

I can throw a list of games at you, some which should be available quite cheap atm, but what sort of genres do you like?

Some I'd personally recommend anyways, so any of these I rate as really good games..

Batman - Arkham Asylum
Halo Reach
Halo ODST
Halo 3
Dynasty Warriors 7
Bayonetta
Assassins Creed, any/all of them
Mass Effect 1 & 2

I've been considering HALO, and I've heard of Mass Effect - I'm not so hot on Assassin's creed though, I've seen it played... Not for me.

Good suggestions with Mass effect 1 + 2 & Arkham Asylum.

Might I suggest Dead Space 1 & 2? While they might not be everyone's cup of tea, if you like horror you might like these.

Halo is definitely a great FPS. and I might add to the list, resident evil 5, but only if you have a friend to play it with.

Maybe give Oblivion a pass it has a really badly designed leveling system.

If you like Horror, try to pick up the three F.E.A.R. games. Great fun, and I haven't regreted purchasing any of them.

Also, Bioshock is a great one, and Bioshock 2 is an ok one.

If you like games with plenty of character, and a strategy light game, pick up Brutal Legend.

If a God of War type game is your cup of tea, pick up Castlevania, Lords of Shadows. I love that game, and it's actually very hard to get frustrated at it, even on Paladin (Hard); You gain Mana by hitting things without being hit, you gain health by using mana to hit things, and you basically have all the tools you need to beat the game almost right from the start, as long as you get good enough to use them. I do have to warn you, though; Combat is amazing, puzzles are simple brain teazers that help break up the action, but FETH the platforming levels..... Whoever was the lead designer of those needs to get.... somethinged. It expects you to know several moves that only come into play once in the game, and it NEVER tells you how do do things.

I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.

Why? Completely different settings. I thought Oblivion was rather.. lame.

Oh don't get me wrong there's a lot of things that Oblivion does that are simply amazing for it's time but it's the little things that make the game unplayable for me such as enemies taking a billion hits to die, monsters

leveling up to you making it feel like you haven't progressed, a badly designed leveling system, psychic guards, a gakky bartering system, etc. This is why I like the Fallout series cause those things aren't in there.

Fallout is awesome, but I think Oblivion is at least equally as awesome.

+1 for bioshock's, dead space's and FEAR's, i have them all, really good if you want good fun (and admitadly quite scary) first and third person shooters, also Gears is good fun, though i have only played em,
OR if you want good, fun and easy 'beginners' games, get halo reach, or 3 (IMHO 3 has a better campaign)

Halo
Bioshock (only the first)
Dead Rising (haven't played the second yet, but liked the first)
Bayonetta (like how DMC4 should have been; less emo more demon/angel bashing)
Dead Space
Eternal Sonata

I'd say Oblivion and Fallout, but after finally getting them on the PC as well a few months back they seem a lot better if they're not on the 360.

Please do yourself a favour and don't buy Halo 3... Compared to the first two, it's a real mess.

I'd strongly suggest picking up Gears 2, great fun online, a nice progression of the story and some brutal set pieces. I'd also second the purchase of Arkham Asylum and the first Bioshock game, both fantastic exponents of their arts (fps and platform/brawler). If you can find it get 'The Orange Box', it's fantastic value for money and at least 2 months worth of solid gaming, if not more!

One game i cannot recommend highly enough is Battlefield: Bad Company 2. It is amazing.

There is a lot of debate as to if it better than COD or not. They are both great games with slightly different play styles that can suit different people.

You can pick up a copy from most places pretty cheap, if you buy new you geta code which gives you loads of map packs for free. And it will prep you for when battlefield 3 comes out in October.
