Hi Dakka,

Ive been thinking of a new project, and settled upon the idea of a norse dwarf army. To represent the savagery and barbarity of the Norse Dwarves, i didnt think Warhammer Armies: Dwarves was fitting.

How would people feel if i were to use AoW Slayers as Empire Flagellants, with the Chaos Dwarves from FW as regular swordsmen and handgunners?

The army would pack in 102 flagellants in 3k points.

What is Dakka's thoughts on this??

Thanks in advance,

Vitruvian

I wouldn't mind, but tourneys and GW stores sure would.

So take a slayer heavy army?

A couple of reasons really:

- I want some mages, to represent the mages of the norsemen helping out.
- I can take 310 of the 750 required for core as flagellants if i use empire.
- I like the idea of a crazy slayer hero riding a dragon (using Karfl Franz rules)

I really don't think most would care as long as the models vaguely conformed to WYSIWYG. However, GW would surely not be happy about you using non GW figs.

If you start using non-GW, your question doesn't really pertain to here, IMHO. You could use stuffed animals or rolled-up socks. In any case, it won't be tournament friendly.

Norse are already represented by WoC and their gods are Chaos gods. I think you could use dwarf models and just make them "counts-as" Chosen (or whatever you want). As long as the base size is the same and the opponent knows what equipment they have.

If you made the entire army Dwarf, I think that gets a little more confusing in terms of WYSIWYG. I think more than 1 or 2 (small) units of "counts-as" and you're making a muddy game and it's not entirely fair to who you're playing and then you're at the mercy of them allowing you to use it.

Before FW came out with some of the Chaos Dwarf models, I was contemplating how to make Chaos Dwarfs with just the regular Dwarf book. Of course, that's much easier. And "spellcasters" could be the big forge thing or maybe one of the war machines on a very large base.

Yeah, I gotta say using one region's background with another race, and the using a whole other region's rulebook to represent them is pretty confusing. I mean, why not just use the WoC book to represent Dwarves from the Norse region?

Leaving tournaments and the like aside, I gotta say I'd be pretty dubious this army would be fun to play against. I'd give it a go, but if the outcome was at all like what I suspect it would be, I wouldn't play against it a second time. I really don't want to spend my time in a game trying to remember what units 'really' are.

To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

How ever if you do run dwarfs as woc make sure they are on the right sized bases.

To make the issue even MORE confusing, Empire in 4th and 5th had its own Dwarf unit to represent how many Dwarves live in the Empire, so there's precedent for Dwarf models in an Empire list.

Agreed with the majority. Drwaf models with WoC norse fluff and Empire rules is kind of a clusterfeth.

Just do Warriors of Chaos with some chaos dwarves? Or non-particularly-chaotic norse with the WoC book, with some normal dwarves as Chaos Warriors?

How comfortable are you with GS or converting in general? If you can think of a theme to differentiate the models from their stock counterparts as well as tying the army together i would love to see this army come to fruition!

This was only a fleeting fancy generated by seeing the AoW slayers.

However, i do plan to do 3k of norse using this fandex:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/34396670/Warhammer-Armies-Norse

I will let you know when i start it, should have some funky conversions (ie DE scourges to Valkyries, Ogre Thundertusk to a woolly mammoth etc)

You were one of the main inspirations that led me to that fandex btw

Actually back in the day GW produced a whole line of Norse Dwarfs. They basically looked like short Vikings. So of the dwarf fluff even talks about the dwarfs that lived far to the north. Dwarfs have been in that region since the game started. So there really isn’t anything wrong with what you are proposing. However for your opponent’s sake you might what to think about just using the Dwarf list, use no black powder, very few crossbows and war machines. Try focusing on big block units, and your slayers will be just what they are, awesomeness. That pretty much what the Norse Dwarfs were back in the day, thought they also had wizards back in 2nd and 3rd edition, but you could convert up a shaman and use the anvil of doom rules.
