So long story short, I've been trying to teach my wife how to play warhammer 40k and so far the reception has actually been mostly in the positive. She likes most of the models all cept tanks. Tanks just do not sit well with her for some reason. She likes more fantasy stuff but there's tanks in there too and a LR looks kind of like a dwarf tank sometimes so I don't quite get it.

Anyone else has this aversion to tanks or can help liuminate me on why someone may dislike tanks? I just don't quite get it.

And before anyone suggests it: No, painting the tank pink won't fly. She actually already dislikes the ultramarines cause their "color is way too bright" She perfers more like black templars or grey knights look. I'm not sure she likes walkers all that much either...

Tanks aren't people.

Try a historical game. You can have elephants instead.

Same reason people would probably like them. May just seem too clunky and bothersome to deal with.

Grey Knights are probably one of the few armies that can get away without using any vehicles and still performing kind of decently, unlike Tyranids who simply just don't have any vehicles and kind of suffer with their current codex. It isn't all about vehicles, but they act as nice shells to protect the infantry a little more.

Tanks in fantasy doesn't work for me either tbh
All these steam tanks et al won't get a look in
You don't need them in fantasy so that may be one approach

She how she feels about a green tide or IG blob army after moving all the models maybe she will feel different, and see tha vehicles have their purpose even though they don't fit her idea of cool.

I'm not much of a tactican, but as far as I know you can field pretty decent tank-less armies with Marines. Then there are of course 'Nids and Dark Eldar.

I can assure, every xeno/chaos player on this board dislikes tanks too, though perhaps for a different reason.

Honesty, tanks are not mandatory. Tyranids and Daemons don't have tanks as noted before, Orks and Guard can get away with it via hording, Dark Eldar, Blood Angels, and Grey Knights have plenty of reserve choices, and the other codices have their options too.

Footslogging is possible. It just takes a little more thought than parking lot lists.

But as an Eldar player I love my fast anti-grav tanks. Nothing should be more annoying than an Eldar/Dark Eldar unit zooming 36" across the board to grab objectives.

I really dislike tanks. They're chunky, not streamlined, and look pretty boring to paint. A field cluttered with several lumps of monotonous metal doesn't appeal to me.

I do, however, like Dark Eldar tanks, probably because they say more "hobby skiff" than tank. I love their models and don't mind painting them, although all those bitz take aaaages. It's a design thing with me. I like sleek and fast. I also don't like tanks irl

As said before, Tyranids and Daemons don't even use tanks. DE and Orks do, but they aren't your typical tank. Perhaps you can try tempt her with those.

Every army can be played without tanks. Where is the problem?

Most even wihtout any vehicles (all except Dark Eldar perhaps)

What does she define as "tanks"? Any and all AFVs?

The only vehicles I like, are walkers, the stromraven and the ork truck. As such, I would probably never buy a stormraven because it looks like such a schlep and boring to paint. At least walkers have personality, and the truck, looks kind of fun.

I really don't like vehicles myself. I prefer the thought that 40k is this grim dirty infantry battle where people are slaughtered in endless meat grinder battles. Where the cities are all so ruined and destroyed that tanks cant even maneuver though the rubble and all that's left is infantry darting from crater to crater.

As such, I intend to have almost pure infantry armies.

Just let her play without tanks. They aren't a requirement to play. I used to be fairly 'meh' about them myself. (And then I had to throw in a friend's LRC one day to fill out points...and magic happened.) But on the real, she will enjoy the game more if you let her play it her way.

What about suggesting she plays Orks? Ork vehicles are pretty customisable, so if she finds the sight of a mass of uniform tanks dull then converting or painting each one to make it unique would lead to a characterful army. Failing that, she could just play them as a horde of infantry.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

I use vehicles in my armies because they are functional and speed my games up.

Aesthetically, I don't really like them. I don't like that I've spent so long painting my minis and then I just put on the table models that have big flat surfaces.

First, check if it's literally just 'tanks' she dislikes. Does she dislike skimmer vehicles also? Eldar/Dark Eldar could be an option.

Otherwise, there are a number of viable armies that don't use transport vehicles. Girls tend to love Tyranids, I think but they'd better enjoy painting. Lower model count armies like DoA Blood Angels, Deathwing, 'Loganwing', 'Draigowing', Daemons... seriously, all of these armies can win games just about as well as any other ones.

I kind of lost my taste for vehicles after my Chaos Vindicator was immobilized on the first turn by an Imperial assassin. Since then, it's been mostly meltabomb-toting footsloggers, so it is doable.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

Footdar can work well, and the brightness of the traditional schemes can be changed easily. Problem you may run into is the aversion to walkers.

Ofcourse in fantasy, you don't need to bother with tank type stuff, just skip taking those options if she likes an army that has them.

The tanks are the only reason I actually play 40K. If it didn't have the tanks, I wouldn't be playing it.

Having said that. Necrons (what my wife likes) don't have any real tanks at the moment either. You don't have to take Monoliths and you can do much worse in the heavy support catagory of the game than 3 full units of heavy destroyers.
