Hey guys! So I've got these chimeras, and I want a pair of vindicators. Money is not a thing I have to spare, but bits and what not I do have. Is the chimera to vindicator overhaul doable? How much should I change? I'm thinking a new front plate would be needed, and I could move the hatch to where the turret hole would be. I guess I'm just looking for some brain storming help. Ideas? Would I be better off trading them for rhinos and going from there or something?

Sounds perfectly workable to me. The Vindi's just a big tank gun tacked onto an APC chassis, no reason a Chimera couldn't be used instead of a Rhino (especially say if the chimera forge world was nearer)

It also depends whether you want to make them really look like Vindicators, with the big dozer blade and the cannon in the front or just want something to count as Vindicators (which could just be done by adding a turret with sufficiently fat gun for example).

I did sumthing simular with a rino(old whirlwind) and what you are saying will work and look cool. You chould build the big gun into where the heavy bolter/flamer would be and geen stuff around the gun where it conects to the hull to make it look like dust cover for the gun like sum of the old ww2 tanks. my vindi was esayeer to convert because it was for a chaos army.

If you know someone who has rhinos to swap, that would be easier, but a chimera version of the Vindi does sound a fun project.
Personally I'd build it the way the real WW2 Jagdpanther and Jagdtiger were built - new front armour (covering the Chimera heavy bolter) continuing up to become the front of a raised fixed body.

I've decided to go scratch build in a German WWII Stug infantry support tank kind of look. That said:
Do any of you guys have or know anyone who has some of the tracks and road wheels from the old imperial guard vehicles? I might need more to make a pair.
And check in the PnM blog section if youre interested to see how they come out! I'll try and document it there.
Thanks!

I personally am a big fan of Lonewind's chimera/vindicator look:

Would the thunder cannon on the old old vindocator from White Dwarf issue 118 be way too oversized on a chimera chassis?

No.
Sell the chimeras, buy Vindicators. They are nothing alike. The chimera is a transport, with a small hull gun, turret, and a chimera chassis. The Vindicator is a tank, with a big hull gun, siege shield, and a rhino chassis.

It can work quite well honestly. Back in late 3rd Ed before the Iron Warriors became JACSM army I had built a vindi using the the 2nd Ed metal vindi bits & a chimera. It is not only a highly unique tank, but looks quite killy. It works well for CSM especially due to the odds of them, esp Iron Warriors, tinkering w/ things that break down/get blown up are far greater than regular marines. If you can find an old vindi kit & just put the chimera track assemblies on it in place of it's own & then put the rhino track assemblies on the chimera hull it sure makes for a killer-looking set of tanks.

And that reminds me that IW used to be able to field Baslisks - my conversion used a chimera chassis but had a heavy missile launcher turret instead of the earthshaker cannon. You could do something similar for a counts-as Vindi, if your bits box makes a giant missile launcher easier than a Vindi-style fixed gun.
