Because it looks like a 5yr old designed it by drawing two stick figures, one large, one small in the positions we see on the dreadknight and the guys sculpting the model took this design verbatim and made it into plastic.
I.E. it looks like gak, it could have been made to look way better.
The guy controlling it should not be exposed at all, If it were a big robot looking thing then it would look good, but not in its current incarnation.

I would say it would have looked much better as a Dreadnought, but to be honest it would have looked better as something that looked more like a mecha from Gundam or something. The dreadknight should have taken more of its design from the mech in Aliens than anything else though. The design looks ridiculous. I don't know what the design team was thinking when they made that thing.

It should have been based off the Contemptor Dreadnought, honestly.
Would have gone that whole "It's a Grey Knight, but bigger" route without looking like they asked a 5 year old for design advice.

^Absolutely this. The Contemptor would have made a lot more sense in a GK army anyway, since they have access to lots of old, advanced technologies. Well, at least more sense than a super-sized exo-suit for dudes in terminator armour.
When I get around to my Dreadknight (likely gonna be the last piece in my GK army aside from Rhinos), I'm gonna use a Contemptor Dread or FW's new Relic Contemptor body and combine it with pieces from the Dreadknight kit.

I would have made it a compromise between a Dreadnought and what it is now.
I would have had it have the much bulkier profile, but it would be piloted in the same way as a Dreadnought. Maybe a little shorter and wider, but it would have been much more like some sort of bipedal mech then the boxy dred figure.
I mostly dislike the baby carriage feel, not the actual concept.
And it would also have been an Av13 walker with a 5+ invuln.

The Dreadknight has to involve a piloted suit for it to be fluffy. One of the reasons the Grey Knights have so few Dreadnoughts is that they are extremely dedicated to having their dead preserved on Titan.
However, the main problem with the suit is the section encompassing the pilot's crotch. The power loader from Aliens did NOT have crotch armor, so it looked a lot better. The crotch armor is what gives the entire area a "baby holder" feel, so removing it would do wonders for the design. Although I do admit, having the crotch plate read "Titan" was pretty clever.

I mostly agree, but I feel MC status is far better against the greater daemons it's intended to fight. Other MCs can just smack open walkers.
I wish I'd been more confident in conversion skills when I made mine. As it stands I don't even want to use it. I would've liked a more recessed compartment, possibly shielding everything but the head.

There are (obviously) a couple of pieces of Dreadknight artwork in the Herp-a-Derp Codex, and they vary quite a bit. One of them makes the Dreadknight looks huge, with the Terminator hanging there. Looks absurd.
But then there's this other picture, early on in the book, where the design is different. Rather than hanging there in his baby-harness, the legs of the Terminator are integrated with the legs of the suit (ie. his legs disappear into the armour of the suit).
Actually, waitaminnute - why am I describing this? Screenshot time!
That first one is the over-sized comical suit. The second one looks a lot smaller, and the Terminator is far more integrated with the suit. I would have much preferred the second one.

If you're going to convert a dreadnight then maybe you should try to make it look more like that. Stand it upon a higher base than your infantry to make it stand tall between lines of Grey Knights, a good centrepiece for the army that actually looks really cool.

I like the one in the second picture. Should've been like that, but alas... Let's leave the pilot exposed, but oh, wait... he has plot armour so its ok, his toughness is still over powered.

I like the idea of a contemptor as a dreaded knight.
The model as is, lacks a head. Reminds me of the headless rider...
Would it make sense as a "super-penitent engine" ? The style and exposure would fit nicely.
I'll have to copy someones conversion if I ever plan to complete the kit I bought.

Great, I get to slightly buck the trend! I love my dreadknight, think it is lovely looking and detailed. If you pose it fully upright it is much better and the sword looks better than the hammer. All round it looks magic.
On the other hand, I can't be doing with the contemptor dreadnought, think it looks like a cheesy 70s robo-toy which would have about 3 tacky phrases spoken in a speak'n'spell kind of way! Think the other dreads are much, much better models and that is FW price too - lose-lose for me.
I quite like the rules too, it is different to a dreadnought, it's the genuinely totally unique GK unit, nobody else has anything like it!
I'll sit back and wait for the inevitable abuse now!

It would have been far better if they had made the Dreadknight the more advanced ancestor to the Dreadnought by making the Dreadknight the smaller relative of the Knight titans, thus filling in a gap which would run from power armor all the way to the largest titan.
Instead, they made a bad IoM improvisation of an Eldar Walker...

I still think they should have been Warjack-esque construct about the size of a Terminator driven on by the Techmarines or Librarians of the Grey Knights.
I think it would have been a far, far cooler way for a Grey Knight Techmarine or Librarian in Terminator armor to have a bodyguard unit.

Other than what I mentioned above I think this idea would be neat. Perhaps going a bit further by having something akin to a hugely armored Skitarii made out of a 'failed' GK, or, a GK volunteering for such an honor. Still obviously in the Dreadnought class, but not... if you know what I mean.
