Ello Dakka Dakka!
I'm new to Warhammer Fantasy but I have been playing 40k for about a year now. I love me Orks but I'm gettin' a might be tired of paintin' Boyz. As a general for WH Fantasy, I'm looking for an army with fewer units and BIIIIIIIIG creatures. Doing some research it looks like Warriors of Chaos, Ogre Kingdoms, and Lizardmen might be my best bet but I need professional opinions.

Can I play any of these armies with very few models running just bigger creatures and still have them be competitive? I like the idea of putting a handful of huge models on the board. Ogre Kingdoms seems to do this well but I will probably get tired of painting half-naked fat dudes all the time. So can I pull this off with Warriors of Chaos or Lizardmen?

Nope hordes is what wins games these days.

I do a little jump for joy when I see a couple of big critters across the board from me as I know I am in for an easy game sames when I playing someone to poor/lazy/stupid to put down a few decent sized blocks of troops because steadfast is a bitch and if you aint got it you aint winning.

Damn I cant wait to the GW legal team codex comes out now there is a dex that will conquer all.

Oh. That's a shame. Guess I'll stick with 40k then.

I am just starting out, but I have watched many games now, and I have all the codezes. if you mean big people galore, no one can do it quite like Ogre Kingdoms. WOC can field trolls as core troops (big) and have hell armored juggernaut mellee monsters of death, and so can go small model count.

Noooooooooooo!!!! Don't!!!!

Ogre Kingdoms can be some tough bastards to beat though, I mean, look at those stats! Also they now have more artilerry, monstrous cavalry and new shaman etc.
If you want an army of big guys then Ogres or WoC troll army is your bet, but I'd recommend Ogres. Also one thing I like about them is that we have Gorgers that enter the field after the game starts, they're perfect for killing warmachines or scouts

Also Leadbelchers - Huge giant fatties with cannons in their hands, what's not to like?

Every army CAN be competetive, you just need to know how to play good with the army. No army will be a cakewalk to win with.. with a few exceptions, but still.

Hope I helped.

First off fantasy is crazy fun.

2nd hordes dont win games.

Ogres dont need to be in hordes as of currently until power gamed lists come out.

Woc are not really a horde army you can make them one but you dont have to.
A couple warrior units and some knights and there go your points.

+2 for the ogres. I just switched over to them from empire, and i'm pretty happy. I mean, what's not to love about move and fire artillery mounted on chariots, or a monster, ala thundertusk. I love the new plastic kits as well.

Yeah, I'm following everyone else's sentiment! Ogres are pretty awesome. And you don't have to always paint giant fat dudes, like they said, there are the gorgers, which have a different paint scheme, and there are yetti's! freaking awesome! Also they have all the new, cool stonehorns and stuff.

What about Bretonians? They're not really a horde are they?

Brets are not really a horde but its not like they are actually good
Unless you know exactly what you are doing so not very new player friendly.

But ya ogres not very many guys needed a few leadbelchers some bulls some of their new models a tyrant and a slaughter master and you are set thats like 20 models

Lizardmen can also do this exceptionally well... in the sense that when you deploy your army fully painted it will look amazing, although generally these type of armies are very hard to win with.

Scar-Veterans on Carnosuars, Skink heroes on stegadons, couple of blocks of Saurus/Skink Skirmishers to fill out Core requirements and then go nuts on stegadons, ancient stegadons, terradons, salamanders and razordons.

You can do this and still be semi competitive. You will have your fair share of getting poleaxed, but your victories will be quite spectacular!

How do you feel about minotaur? Could do a Ogre Kingdom army using Minotaur to avoid the "fat guy" look.

Gunline Dwarfs could work too, mix of an anvil, GTs, Cannons, Organ Guns, for your core you can take Thunderers or Quarrellers may need 2-3 units of 20 of those.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Ogres or warrior-only WoC is your best bet.

Least horde armies:
1. Ogres.
2. WoC (no/few marauders).
2. Bret (no/few peasants).
3. Lizardmen (no/few skinks).
4. Dwarfs (warmachine and elites heavy).

Anyone aside from the ogres is looking at 50+ models in games above 1000, ogres OTOH could do it all the way to 2400 (or more can't be bothered to math it).

I've run ogres for quite some time, and if you want to paint as little as possible, they are the way to go.

Even without the big monsters you're looking at ~30-40 ogres total. Take a few more of the expensive monsters/heroes and you can drop your model count down quite a bit.

As for steadfast, it hasn't been a problem for me. Ogres kill so much that you chew through big blocks pretty quick.
I'm running 2 scraplaunchers, 1 Iron Blaster, and 6 lead belchers. They thin out the hordes pretty quick.
I run my bulls as a bus (3 wide 4 deep), and they usually strip steadfast on the charge.

The Flying Firebelly is simply awesome too. Flying with S4 firebreathe puts down quite a few models. Killed 28 dark elf spearmen last night with the breathe.

Well thanks for the advice guys! I think I will try my hand at some WoC. I like the idea of an elite band of warriors in platemail. The sorcerers look really cool too and I heard that they have access to some pretty nasty spells. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!!

There's actually not a lot of armies that are horde. If you mean horde as in the game term horde.

No he means horde as in the 100+ models per 1000pts.

Does anyone else reckon Chaos Daemons could do a low-model count list fairly well? You'd just have to run more of the fancy stuff...

Well sure, they do have expencive core choices and even more expencive special and rare. in fact with saurus being cheaper the only reason lizardmen get to have less models is wide acces to monsters.

Chaos Daemons and Wood Elves both don't have anything that costs less than 12 points (or at least, not anything worthwhile). I'd class both of these armies as a more Elite army. Wood Elves are terrible at the moment though. Chaos Daemons tend to field a lot of Core, meaning they become less Elite.
