Hello All!

Here are pics of some Black Templar Space Marines from a commission work a year or so ago. The models are base coated black and highlighted with various shades of GW "Shadow Grey".

These models are armed, based and detailed as requested.

I hope you like them.

Thanks
D.

You've done a top-notch job on them, of that there is no doubt. However, I must say that I'm not a fan of the blue tint the Shadow Grey gives them. But I appreciate that this was a commission and thus you had no control over such a thing.

But as I said, the quality of the jobs is not in question, especially with regards to the faces.

Amazing paintjob as usual, although really can't get why your client wanted the blue lining on the armor though, somehow it just doesn't fit the whole Black Templars Armor design, but that's just me though other people might have different opinions

It's not blue highlights but various shades of Shadow Grey. I have a personal preference in using Shadow grey instead of the Codex/Fotress greys. For me, the Shadow grey is a more subtle color when working on black.

I have been using Shadow Grey as a highlight for black for over a decade and the clients who want me to paint for them have seen this and do not mind.

Your painting talent is very obvious here. A million kudos to your flesh tones and blending!

I think a bluish hue is appropriate for black armor. I would have used an even deeper, darker shade of blue to enhance the effect of a deep, rich black armor. This is really hard to do for small models.

However, all this said, I never use black when painting miniatures even when it calls for black. On small models (especially vehicles), Very, very dark greys building to medium greys are best for the Templars imho.

Thank you,
I would agree with you on the use of a very dark grey instead of black. The reason for my using black, is time.

I would love to spend much more time on models but time constraints do not allow me to have that luxery. I have to get models completed and out the door on a fairly quick time frame.
Primer Black saves time and for models that are meant to be used in games on tabletops it works for me.

All of my work is for gaming and I truly hope that they are used that way. I would prefer to see my work/models banging away on the battleground than up in a glass case.

Wow, those are nice. I don't see that style of Templar around too often. (no Templar upgrade kit.). But the script makes up for it. And again, they are amazing!

In my opinion these really stand out from the crowd of well painted marines. Apart from the flawless execution, I love what you've done with the Black Templars... the style is what I aspire to be able to do, I just love the black highlighting and the more blueish hue in my opinion works great (and makes the plainish BT colour scheme more interesting). The same goes for the red weapons and trimmings. For me, the addition of red to the colour scheme takes Templars from 'meh' to 'wow, I want'.

If I did a space marine army I'd want them exactly like this. Superb!

Very nice work man! I agree with you about the shadow grey highlights. I have found that it works very well to add a cool tone to black armor. Keep up the good work man.
