So I'm thinking up stuff for a campaign, and I thought that a flat world would provide some nice plot hooks, warp trickery etc, as well as saving me the headache of mapping a sphere.

Would this be viable? Dark age of technology level, or Eldar level?

Essentially, how outlandish is a flat world, in the 40k galaxy?

I think that's a really cool idea. You could say that its a destroyed planet, so its just a bunch of continent sized plates drifting through space, but somehow still have an atmosphere thanks to some AdMech or Eldar witchery. Or you could say its like discworld, only on the back of a void whale or something.

I think a discworld is a weird idea for WH40k if it isn't an artificial object or a Daemon world

I love the sound of this idea!!! It would make for a great setting. The first explanations that spring to my mind would be a Daemon World, or perhaps some kind of artifiicial structure, maybe like the Forerunner Halos in the Halo series? Perhaps the Old Ones or pre Fall Eldar might have formerly inhabited it and be responsible for its construction. Another idea is that it could be a Necron Tomb World or huge space ship like the Necron World Engine.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

I like the idea too!

The IoM would prob not have the tech to build it (even DAoT humans). But eldars, necrons, Old Ones, maybe even an unknown alien race.

A daemon World would be nice too, but I prefer the idea of some mysterious technology being used to build the flat world, exactly like the rings in halo (yay! forerunners!).

If commanding a Titan is a measure of true power, then commanding a warship is like having one foot on the Golden Throne - Navy saying.

Sounds like a cool idea, and when you take into account some of the stuff in 40K certainly sounds like it would fit in the setting. The idea of it being an Eldar or Necron structure sounds interesting (the Outsider is said to be contained in a Dyson Sphere, so I immediately thought of Necrons when I saw your idea). You could have battles taking place on the surface or below it, within the power plants, docking bays, etc.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

In fact, Eldar Craftworlds are flat, as they are gigantic ships covered with cities, forests, fields and gardens.

In the Eisenhorn books there is a planet with warped geometry and physics, sounds a bit like what your trying to do.
I think its plausable if you involve the ruinous powers.

When in doubt in 40k, just go with "its been this way since discovered 10,000 years ago and nobody knows why". GW does it.

Could also go with orbital shipyards/stations that are above Segmentum Fortresses or major Forge Worlds like Gryphonne or Mars. They're probably the size of continents and mostly flat.

Eye of Terra.

I think this would be a great idea.

That whole planet as a sphere thing is completely over-rated.

Things were so much more fun when we thought we'd fall off the earth if we got too near the edge... *sigh* Ah, the good ol' days...

I'd say go for it as it can be explained by lost technology or good old magic.

Put it in the warp and you can do whatever you want with it. Daemon worlds are shaped by who rules them so if they want it flat then by the four dark gods it will be flat. Just think of medrengard for the iron warriors its made out of metal and has liquid metal rivers so anything is possible.

Maybe a necron dry dock in space? If they can build a round planet, they could build a flat one.

I would love to see a 40k version of Discworld!

It would only work if it was held up by 4 Giant Squiggoths and riding on a massive Void Whale.

I would make it be an ancient platform drifting through space. It isn't known who or what built it.

basically a giant rectangular box of rock that has massive Gravitational generators inside that allow it to keep an atmosphere.

both of the main flat surfaces have typical mountains, cities, and water ways, but the edges are barren wastelands of rock.

The gravitational generators are also used to pump water through the system. water from an ocean is dragged down to the other side and comes back up in a massive upwelling in another ocean. causing an interesting method of traveling between the sides, diving down a whirlpool and coming out the other side.

the energy for the gravity generators comes from a mysterious generator that is believe to tap the warp itself for its energy.

I think the ancient space platform is a nice idea. It could still have shields and a life support system still operational to support a breathable environment for those units/troops without breathing gear

Starcraft has many missions located on human orbital space platforms with gravity (and one on Xel'Naga worldship). If some science fiction writers think it's possible in 25th century, than why it won't be in 410th?
But mountains, forests and water should be located under large domes - this will look more realistic.
