The official Games Workshop options costs too much for me, so what do you DakkaDakka experts use instead, for Assassins, Mystics and Crusaders? I'd prefer other GW models as substitutes.
I know people sometimes use Dark Eldar models for the Death Cult Assassins, but even as a red-blooded male, I think the women in skimpy clothing version is silly.... so I would rather have some kind of cloaked, shady looking figures instead. I just don't know which armies in 40k or Warhammer have henchmen sized people who look like that.

Well if you want a assassin that custom and not too hard to do you could try something like this:
I made it for a friend in our dark heresy group. Its the first model ive painted in a while and really got down to the essence of the character.

That's the kind of assassin-type figure I would want. Where did that model come from?

Nice. For assassins, the various cloaked figures (e.g. wood elves) would certainly be worth a look. (Hmm, even the cloaked IG sniper scouts?) For mystics, maybe some of the new WHFB magic user mini-kits? Henchmen could be from almost any of the human-ish lines from 40K or WHFB.
In all cases, they just need a little Imperialising, e.g. some equipment with symbols.

Wood elves from Warhammer look pretty good to me. Hey, stupid question, but are Lord of the Rings models the same size as Warhammer / 40k ones? If I decide to use elves or rangers or whatever from there, would they fit size wise? Automatically Appended Next Post: After spending way too long on GW's website, I think I am digging the Lord of the Rings Rangers of Middle Earth the most. Besides the size issue I am having, I don't know how customizable LOTR models are. Do the guys come put together with arms attached or not, basically I can't find a picture of the sprue.

LotR is slightly smaller scale - most 'normal' LotR humans look too small in 40K/WHFB, unless you're wanting a small/young human. The plastics vary wildly on separate bits, many are one-piece bodies.

Dangit. Looks like Wood Elves is the winning option, with non "shooting an arrow" style arms.
What about Crusaders and Mystics? Automatically Appended Next Post: Wait a second. On the GW site, none of the 16 Wood Elves Glade Guard shown have a cool looking hood like in swampyturtule's picture. All the hoods look different. What is that all about?

For mystics, I use some of these. They also serve as my PBS for my guard. 28mm cultists from Eureka miniatures.

Those mystic guys are really cool. Having one non-GW model in an army won't be so bad, right?

I dont know if it would be any cheaper and I know you said you would prefer GW.... but have you looked at hassle-free miniatures? they have some things that maybe as you described..

So I am really digging using a lot of wood elf parts for my DCA. I happened upon some old threads, actually about Tanith Imperial Guard, that caught my eye:
From this thread among others. I think those look pretty sweet. I like the shoulder pads mixed in with the hood and cape. Thing is all of my DCA are going to be wielding CC weapons instead of guns. I am planning on getting IG Cadian arms and chopping off the guns and adding on falchion blades (along with cutting off chainswords for the left arm and adding falchions). Sound do-able?
Also, I was wondering what people think of Wood Elves legs, torso, head and cape, with IG arms (versus IG arms and torso in that picture). Think that will look ok?

Ive actually built a few of those for my tanith 1st when i first started trying to decide on how to do them. Its not that bad of a look and actually was my inspiration for my own DCA Your ideas sounds do able and probably will work too. I suggest however that looking into 2 kits ( WE and Cadians) could get expensive. There are enough hooded heads in the box to make a squad of DCA for henchmen. Yet the arms on the cadians might be alittle big for the look of the DCA. Ive tried this all last summer and this summer. I found the work needed to convert WE => Tanith / DCA would be alot of $ and alot of time. If you got both, more power to you. However, alittle cutting and a few modifications on the WE set works just as good and you only need one kit

Well if I do all Wood Elves except for the arms, I wouldn't need to buy more than the Wood Elf box, since I have a buddy who has boatloads of extra Cadian arms around that he will give me. (The swords I'd attach wouldl all be falchions from my GK boxes).
If I decide to do Cadian torsos and arms, then I will have to pay more, but it would only be for the torsos, which I can get on ebay.

My guard army is mostly NON- GW models. Only the henchmen for my GK are non- GW models (well and one single Ammobunker Inquisitor).
I don't play in stores, so who makes the models is irrelevant as long as it looks suitable for the job.

UPDATE:
Hey, I made a couple of DCAs based off of the Tanith models I found here on Dakka that I liked so much. Combo of wood elves stuff and with cadian torsos and arms seems to work. Or at least for me it does!!!!
The swords are GK falchions

I used the hands and falchions. I was planning on using the falchions themselves only, but the power armored hands actually look ok on IG arms.
I made some more DCA, and Melta Gun Warrior Acolytes as well done in this "Tanith" style. I'll try to get a picture and post them up soon.... or if I take too long to do that, I'll have a painted picture of them up soon!
I've been pondering a way to use GW parts to build a Mystic, but I think I might go with one of the third party options mentioned above. It is going to be hard to beat them in look....
