Any fellow dakkaite redditors probably already saw this today but: I need help picking the color rods for my Necrons! Trying to tune up the Necrons I have so I can go full force when the new release comes out.

I got plastruct blue rods, but they were way too transparent. Just to get an idea I used marker to make a darker blue and also a purple rod. I will look for another manufacturer if I go with one of those choices. Don't pay close attention to their paint jobs, I had these when I was little and I will revamp the paint scheme based on the choice of color rod.

I like the way the green one stands out, but thats probably the light. Otherwise I would say blue.

For what it is worth, I'd probably go with something more in tune with Icy Blue for the rod.

I actually painted an Necron up in Ultramarine colors once...

And I voted for blue.

The Blue looks good, but imo, the purple is more unique... I vote purple.

Out of those, I'd go for purple. However, green is fine, and much cheaper to do. The blue looks OK. Red would be a good colour.

If it wasn't for the unfortunate existence of Ultramarines, I'd say blue. Since they do exist, I say purple.

Screw the Ultramarines, blue looks great

Use your purple marker to make the part of the tube nearest to the casing a more purplely colour and you have the best of both blue and purple!

Actually, only the green one does carry that feeling of an ancient soulless machine for me. The other ones just look wonky to me. As someone else said, yellow might do the trick, too, but I'm not entirely sure.

"We train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won't allow them to write "feth" on their airplanes because it's obscene!" (Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now)

And you know what's funny? "feth" is actually censored on a forum about a dystopia where the nice guys are the ones who kill only millions of innocents, not billions.

Agreed.

I voted for blue because it looks oddly good. But as already stated green would be cheaper and more convienient.

I say green myself. I like all 3 of em but the green just screams necron to me. Yellow might look good too.

I'm actually interested in trying this myself. What size of rods do you need to match the green ones provided in the the necron kits?

Out of the poll options I chose green. The blue and purple look neat, but just seem less menacing to me. I also thought red would be a good choice, gives a real 'danger' vibe.

3/32" or 2.4mm is the size you want to look for.

As for the suggestions on Green based on convenience / cost - that doesn't worry me. Any extra time spent on rods is negated by the fact that Necrons are easier to paint than other armies. Even if that weren't the case, I'm not concerned about the slight cost or extra time.

As for red - I'm not interested. That seems to be the most common choice if people opt to not use the stock green so my thought is what's the point of being different if you're not really that different.

Other general feedback: I agree the green has a 'haunting' look the other colors do not generate. I do think though that the blue generates a vibe of an undead soul (really reminds me of the Scourge from warcraft). I'm still debating between the two so any additional thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Green, i know it is classical, but it just have a great contrast with the dark grey, and at 30cm it will make more diference The other 2 colors are too dark, and will mix with the Dark grey from boardgame distances...
Red rods would bring the same type of contrast as the green. Post a photo with the light blue thing, mabe it have a good contrast too...

Im just pointing that, Necrons are nice when coming in big units, slowly marching into your direction, and in that cases, with that dark grey, it would be nice if the big lights of the gauss shine over it all... What your enemy see? Gosthly green lights around skeletal silhouetes. Creepy?

If my post show some BAD spelling issues, please forgive-me, english is not my natural language, and i never received formal education on it...
