Right, so being the contrary humanoid being that I am, I once wondered why did all the Guard Regiments have to look like some kind of real life existing or once-existing army ... IN SPAAAAAAACEEEEEEE!!!!!!
I mean surely new cultures that aren't remakes of old ones developed in some way during the thousands of years when all of humanity were cut off from each other, right? Right?
Of course, Games Workshop have been known to be remarkably unimaginative in some areas, like names of wargear for BA and the SW codicies... "Ah, just tack 'Blood' or 'Wolf' on the start of the name, they won't mind..."
Anyhoo, my brother had a Guardsman he had acquired at one of GW's paint a model and take it home with you things, a few years ago now, so I wangled it off him and had to butcher it a bit so I could apply paints/ greenstuff to it efficiently. I want to know what you guys/gals/ misc think of it.
Also decided to add the sketch of what I planned to do with it, just for reference.
Fluffwise, they're from a storm world, which is completely covered in gale-force winds, hence the heavy clothing/scarf to keep dust out and the body armour to protect them from airborne pebbles etc, that are carried by the winds. The body armour doubles as handy protection from xenos, heretics and mutants when they wage war off-planet.
I will be starting a Guard Army soon as part of a 'Tale of Four Gamers' thing my old club will be doing, but still unsure whether to do this to all of them...
Pleeease leave feedback! The head, forearms and the heavy skirt/kilt/leg cloth protection thing were the greenstuffed areas. Much less experience with sculpting than painting, so please angle your attentions thataway.

I think it's somewhat imaginative. The helm however makes him look like a Magneto (x-men) marine or something. (from the pictures anyway)
I think the skirt/kilt thing looks decent from the back but at the front he seems to be wearing baggy trousers.? If this was the effect you're goin for, fair enough.
He looks fairly decent to be honest, I can imagine a regiment of them looking fairly decent.
Imperial Guard are usually way too boring...

I can live with an army of Magneto troopers.
Also, about the skirt/kilt thing, the pictures don't seem to show off the flaps/folds of the thing very well, so I might have to accentuate them on the next try.

They're pretty good. Take your time a bit more on the paint job, I'm not sure if it's the pic but perhaps the paint is a bit thick? Really good stuff overall. How are you working on the tanks? Any conversions planned?

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

About tanks, maybe. I think I'll cross that bridge when I reach it.
The paintjob was a bit rushed, aye, but because it wasn't what I wanted to test out. Also, the sculptwork itself isn't particularly smooth, so I might have been subconciously trying to compensate/cover up maybe? I dunno.

I think it looks pretty damned cool. I like the scarf, actually. It makes the model look more dynamic and adds for a splash of off color to tie everything together with. Beleive it or not, I'd think it would look better if you went just a bit deeper with the quilting because it's subtle when it's blown up, from across the table it wouldn't even be visible. The helmet is a bit strange looking, but it's a nice change of pace from a steel pot or a steel pot with a gas mask, which seem to be the only two options. If you're game for mass producing these guys, I'd say it would be a huge step up from just making another Cadian army.

It's an ugly planet. A bug planet.

For some reason at first I immediately thought "High Elves with lasguns?!", but then I looked closer and noticed it was a kilt then the fluff for storm worlds and it all clicked. I'm digging the back of the kilt a lot, front is sort of confusing, but I guess that works with something new and not what we have now. Not a huge fan of the helmet but it could work, might just be the paint scheme but I also thought of Magneto. Be interested to see what all you can come up with. Scarf looks great also, might be a bit thick I can't tell from the shot, but I suck at doing fabrics and may be totally off.

I agree that there should be new cultures in the 41st millennium and your guardsman is awesome.
He associates with regiments recruited from underhive gangs.
