Not sure if this fits in this forum but here we go. Officially today, I have completely given up on everything games workshop, funny thing is I actually feel good about it. I have been with them since Rouge trader, except I never got into 4th edition. There is a number of reasons why I have turned my back, but I am basically looking at other avenues for miniature gaming. I started getting into Hordes, but do any of you none GW guys know of any really good miniature games with a really good set of rules? I also picked up All things zombie, because I really love anything zombies, but I am open too anything especially historical. Thanks for reading.

I keep but I no longer buy. It is not an absolute rule, but an effective general one. Even my paints purchases are no longer GW. Its more practicality than doctrine, but a little bit of doctrine helps too. What I do buy is normally second hand or otherwise discounted heavily.

I've started playing Malifaux myself, and since it is a skirmish game, the buy-in is cheap. If it's zombies you want, you can play the Ressurectionist faction and raise them, including zombie hookers! You can download a functional (if heavily edited) PDF version of the rules as well as PDFs of the five factions.

http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en is a Sci-Fi skirmish game that also has free downloadable rules and sample army lists. It looks interesting, and I've downloaded stuff, but I haven't given it a go yet.

While my start was in 25mm Napoleonics, I haven't kept up so I can't recommend any historical rulesets. The advantage of historical games is that the units are all public domain, so figure prices stay reasonable. Try reading the message boards at http://www.theminiaturespage.com/ for historical recommendations.

there are no minis involved, but every once in a while while out playing frisbee golf we see this group of guys having a giant sword fight in the park. There has to be all sorts of rules as we have sat and watched them for a while at times. Laughing of course. It is much like the Star Wars Guy, but 20 of them, and all battling in a Royal Rumble type event. Each has home made armor and store bought toy weapons painted. This just may be your next thing? It is like 1:1 scale battles with innocent bystanders and all!

You only need a few mini's to get started.

Good rules.

And you get to blow the <expletive deleted> out of the other mech's

That's me. I've just given up buying stuff because of the cost and the sad state of the game. I buy the very occasional model. I had a pack of figures for christmas for instance. They still make cool stuff and I like that from a modelling perspective.

I grew up with RT and 2nd edition, Necromunda and Gorkamorka - it's not like that any more. It'll never go back and I don't want to move on. Thus we part company.

There is two different types of All things Zombie, I have the miniature game which is made by Two Hours wargames, the other type of All things zombie is the board game version, which I do not have, but its probable similar. The miniature version is based on the reaction system, not like most games are you go I go. Iam going too give it a shot someday.

Yes there was something special about games like Gorkamorka and Necromunda - possibly that they were viable hobbies - cheap fun and characterful. A far departure from the 'buy moar tanks' that is 5th edition!

I too have stopped buying completely. I have kept the models I have and now play a homebrew version of 2nd Ed. It's much more fun than crappy 5th and you need less mini's because the points costs are outrageous!
I also still play Blood Bowl and will probably start playing GorkaMorka again soon. Don't give up on GW entirely. There was a time that thier games were charactful and fun. Just go back 10-12 years and you can't go wrong really!

The Hamsters are nordic berserkers, Tanuki are Samurai. The majority of players are college age and up, a lot of husbands/boyfriends have found it to be a good way of getting their better half into miniature gaming. It might be something your 6 year old nephew would want to play, is that so bad?

But hey, can't please everyone.

Except its a really good game... Its easy to talk out of ones posterior, but I would ask that you refrain from judge something until you've actually experianced it.

To answer the OP, there are a ton of other games out there. To give you a good recommendation I'd need to know what your looking for, be it a replacement to Warhammers range, a skirmish game, a ship based game, etc, etc.

Sorry Matty, I have to disagree. I got a bunch of Brushfire stuff the other day and the miniatures are excellent. What's not to love about Bulldogs in 19th century British Army uniform, complete with pith helmets?

The rules look good too on first read although I haven't had a chance to play a game yet, I do look forward to pitting Emperor Moleon II against Arthur Setter.
