An historical piece. On Dakka. wtf
Had a bit of time between commissions while waiting for deliveries so I though i'd finish this guy. Something a bit different after all the GW stuff i've been doing lately, and was a nice change!
Hope you like And if there are any museum-type historical buffs here - yeah, I know he's not 100% accurate. He's painted for aesthetics, not accuracy.

That is some beautiful painting and basing, there. Who cares if he isn't 100% accurate?
So how big is the model?

Cheers. He's really big, just over 100mm! 1/16 plastic kit from Tamiya. Only cost £11 too!

That is awesome - I really want to start getting some of the larger display type models, though I do not think that I will be able to paint them as well as you

Beautiful. You're a far braver painter than I (and more skilled, obviously ) - once you go past the 28-54mm wargaming ranges, it gets harder and harder to cheat the viewer by hinting at effects and letting them fill in the gaps.
A: Hey, you should try painting one of these 1/16 kits. They look awesome!
B: Wow, you're right!
A: I should mention, though, that to make it look even remotely good, you'll have to know how light works, not simply wash the creases and highlight bumps.
B: that! I'm going back to painting Orks...

Stunning model!
One question: how does the natural shadow/highlight balance work on 1/16 scale? I mean the bigger a model gets the more the natural casting of shadows and highlights start playing a role instead of artificial painted ones.

Wow! stunning piece, great job.
I also would be interested to hear how does it differ with 1/16 kits between natural and artificial light, when you compare it to most of the 28mm GW stuff?

Cheers for the comments guys.
In regards to how large scale differs from 28mm stuff -
You can't just paint it one colour and hope the natural light will highlight and shade it for you. It differs in that you need to understand where light/shadow falls naturally and must paint to support/mimic this more accurately. You can't just highlight using the relief method and expect good results basically.
We'll you can of course, but its not generally the method that gets best results when the subject matter is realistically proportioned and sculpted. This is down to your tastes and how you wish to present the model's form of course though ultimately.
Apart form the blatant shadow from things like his gun and legs, all the light and shade is painted on this guy. Those deep shadows are nigh-on black, and the final highlights are an off-white. He was photographed under fairly flat lighting, so there's no forced/fake light/shade on him as some do.
