Just throwing it out their for all you Druchi who have given op on assassins.
Plain old assassin with extra hand weapon and rending stars.
Pops out of a shade unit and you've got 3 S5 poisoned shots to go with the fist full of BS5 S3 armor piercing shots, all of which fire after marching 10".
If you need to stand and shoot, the assassin's 12" range lets them all shoot at short range.
I've been running 2 units of 5 shades (with extra hand weapons) and shooty assassins and doing pretty well. Scout into good location and march into the flanks. Once out of arch you can spend the game plinking away. (211 points per unit). If needed, the assassin can break off and act on his own.
Last night they wiped out 16 high elf archers, a lion chariot, a great eagle, and killed 10 more spear elves before the high elves surrendered. They also pinned an elf wizard in his unit, preventing him from hoping to another bunker.

I though you could only put assassins in core units?

That's what the assassins want you to believe.
They can hide in any infantry unit.

It really does a number on warriors of chaos. They just don't have the tools to deal with a small fast unit that can be effective while not in combat. They're good enough that it makes spawns viable.

SHHHHH dont go telling people or else my opponents will figure it out for themselves.
But you are right they are hard to deal with same goes with like the WE skirmisher archer scout guys. If you ignore them they will wreck you and if you dont you loose a unit for at least a 2 turns.
The only real thing would be the hellcannon I guess which would most likely shred them if they got close.
Other than that ya.
Have you tried this against a empire gun line? if so how well does it work?

Unless you're shooting the hellcannon at them, you're in trouble.
VS empire, it's torn them up. The 10" march was enough to get out of arc on the flank, shoot for 1 turn, then go into melee.
Though to be fair, the unit of 10 harpies hitting the front of the gunline tore open a pretty big hole too.
Gunlines are easy, it's combined arms that is tougher.

I know right.
I mean I have a sneaky WE player that has his little scout guys run circles around me already.
An idea would be reform so that you make a solid line so they have to stay infront of you then charge next turn if the scouty guys don't run back to their lines.

Coat the Rending Stars in Manbane for even more killy shooting. The errata makes it a lethal combination as the order which the strength bonuses are applied is up to the player whose turn it is.
So on your shooting turn you'll be hitting at a strength 1 point higher than the targets toughness (up to S6) from manbane then +1 strength from the rending stars, combining to give you 2+ to wound against everything but the toughest of enemies. That is really nasty.

The Laws of Thermodynamics:
1) You cannot win. 2) You cannot break even. 3) You cannot stop playing the game.

Is it? Auto-wounding is really nice, and often, S5 is more than enough. The gain is pretty marginal, unless you're shooting at T6/T7 targets with decent armor, which are few and far between.
I'd rather save the 60 points on my pair.

It is more of a special character killer. If you're against WoC with a fully tanked up Chaos Lord coated in a crazy high armour save then it can be worth it. Say he has T5 and a 1+ save, at S5 he still only needs a 3+ save and any hits which don't automatically wound from poison need a 4+ to wound whereas S7 turns it into a 5+ save and needing 2+ to wound. Also with Manbane it means that if you end up in combat the assassin will have a good strength to take down whatever is attacking him before they manage to kill him.
It's purely dependent on who you're facing though, for most armies the S5 will be enough, as you said.

But those rending stars won't hit the a character in a unit, they'll always strike the unit.
If assassins could sniper, I'd agree.
