Looking at coming over next year for this one. So a few questions from those US adepticon vets....

1) When are the tickets and events registration released? I recall reading a few horror stories before of people not getting what they want, and I do of course, want to get into the 40K ring there(not much point to the trip otherwise )
2) What are the good hotels local to the event? I'll be wanting somewhere that's middling of the road in terms of price.
3) How long does it take to get to the general event locale from Chicago airport? Just trying to gauge the travel time to the general area when I set down in the US.
4) I know with big events, people can funnel in days before the actual thing starts. When would be the recommended arrival date?

Much appreciated gentlemen.

1) is variable; watch for future developments. Judging by last year, registration should open up in November, and you'll want to register for anything you want to do the day it opens.

2) Stay in the hotel where the event is. You'll miss out on a LOT of socializing otherwise (including the Great Dakka Mod Meetup, which is usually spontaneous & involves after-midnight pizza).

3) Depends on which airport you're arriving at; there are two major airports in Chicago. In no case is it more than an hour, barring the traffic apocalypse.

4) Personally, I like to arrive Thursday afternoon (first events are on Friday), and leave Monday morning. Lowest-possible stress threshold.

Is there a mailing list you can sign up to so you get messaged as soon as it opens? I mean, how fast do the slots go?

1. Registration will open up right around Halloween/October 31st. Event tickets for some of the bigger events (Warhammer 40K Championships and the Team Tournament) went really fast last year, so I'd register early if you can.
2. The Westin is a fantastic venue. Rooms are $114 a night. Tons of great food options within walking distance as well as a huge Target right across the parking lot. Of course we recommend you stay at the Westin.
3. From O'Hare I'd give yourself 30-45 mins. Midway is a bit further, so maybe 45-60 minutes.
4. The major events begin Friday morning, but we will have a number of events on Thursday night this year (starting around 5/6PM). These events will mostly be free.

Mailing list? Yep. Head over to www.adepticon.org and scroll down a little. In the lefthand column there is a mailing list signup area. We will be sending out an email prior to the cart going live to give everyone a heads up.

Yeah, I want to say that the Team Tournament sold out in less than a month and that the 40k Championships sold out in December?

And I'll second (or third or whatever) staying at the Westin.

For me, the best reason to do this is that the events start so early and run so late that commuting is a waste of precious sleeping/drinking/socializing time.

1) Mattias covered this one.
2) If you're really looking to do it on the cheap and will have transportation, there is a Red Roof Inn about a mile away that typically runs about $35/night. My group usually stays there just because we drive up from St. Louis. I'd like to give the Westin a shot, but I'm not sure I can justify 3x the price, especially when the rest of the group probably would rather do it on the cheap.
4) I get up there on Friday and check in either that night or Saturday morning in the cases in which that I've not gotten into the Team Tournament. This year I plan on getting up there Thursday night so that I can enjoy Friday.

Hmmm....on one hand, the sound of staying on-site and socialising and suchlike sounds pretty schwey....on the other hand, I have to work with the fact I'm already forking out four hundred quid just to get to America. Another three hundred for four nights accommodation sounds a tad excessive at the least....

Do you get people sharing room at this one like at some big conventions I know, to defray costs? I mean, I wouldn't object to going halfsies on a single bedroom and taking a sleeping bag, etc. After all, I'm going there for the adepticon experience, not to sleep. Where I put my head doesn't bother me much.

That's basically what we do: Cram 4 guys into a 2 bed room and pull straws to see who ends up on the floor. It's not glamorous, but it gets the job done and that $35/day goes down to next to nothing for the whole weekend, leaving more cash for me to put into both, my army case AND flask. Works out well because one of the guys doesn't drink while at the con, so we just toss him the keys.

I always feel bad for the room service after we leave though.

Well, to put it simply, from what you've said here, the fact I could pay for a room for myself, and your room for four nights, and probably all my food and drink there, and still pay less then the cost of staying at the hotel does make it sound like a slightly less attractive option....

If it's only a mile away, that's not too bad, I can walk that in half an hour.

Well, mind you, I say it's ABOUT a mile away. Not sure where all you've been in the US before, but we don't exactly have pedestrian friendly locations everywhere. That is to say, I don't know what they really have in the way of sidewalks/crossing lights.

Google Maps

There's a streetview to the hotel. Have a look at what you'd have to walk over

Hey Ketara, I'm definitely going to Adepticon 2012, and will be looking for Dakka folks to room with. Alpharius and I have talked about it, but I'd be looking for more than 1 roommate certainly. So that could help cut down on the cost!

Will be awesome if you make it over for it . Although we probably won't be doing any of the same events, as I'll have fantasy and possibly Hordes stuff painted up, but no 40k.

I'm interested, Steve.

Matthias hit it on the head.

As an aside, I grew up around there, and its definitely not pedestrian-friendly.

And in the interest of full disclosure, I'm the marketing coordinator for AdeptiCon. That aside, staying at the Westin is a great deal.

Hey, if I can go halves with someone on a room there, I'd probably be up for it. Eighty quid a night on top of a four hundred pound flight is probably a little too dear for me though.

Plus, if I stay at the other place after all. I'm thinking twenty five quid or so a night at that other place will be so much cheaper, I could probably get a cab there and back every day and still save substantial moolah.

It's not about the cost, or you wouldn't cross the pond to play with your toy soldiers in the first place; it's about the experience!

Alas, I'm a student, I have to consider the cost.

Although, if I can figure some way of having 'essential documents' I need for my thesis in the States, I may be able to get the Uni to finance my plane tickets.....

There's a Marriot a couple blocks away that serves free breakfast. I stayed there, don't have no idea how much it cost 'cause I'm a Platinum member and stay for free....but it was really close and convenient.

I think I'll probably be staying at the Westin this year if I can make it out.

Also...please keep in mind that the convention can only happen if we meet/exceed our room night commitments. While I fully understand the desire to save money, I think it is also important to recognize the value the Westin brings to the event. They have been fantastic partners and have gone well out of the way to work with us to make all manner of crazy things possible.

I'm getting my own room next time, so there's one more.

It's worth an extra $80 to me to not have to share a room with 3 other grown men, irrespective of how highly I regard them.

I'll be hitting Adepticon for the first time in 2012.

As a newbie to the event, and as a very casual 40K player, what events should I sign up for?

I suppose I could just dive into the 40K tournament, get steamrolled and still have a good time, but any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!

I am also looking at attending next year. and I am a casual player like Alpharius, any event help is appreciated.

I can't wait for 2012 Adepticon. Seriously a great event. While only in my 3rd year it is at the top of my priority list of gaming events.

1) The organization is TOPS.
2) The Team event is FUN. Sure..it can be competitive but I haven't been across the table from any Douche players.
3) You can have an adult beverage while you're gaming.
4) The hobby aspect is really highlighted. Everyone's armies (for all systems) are painted and displayed beautifully.
5) The vendor hall is growing - Forge World's only visit outside a Games Day.... Black library...CMON...Battle Foam...GF9... lots of others.
6) There is an awesome steakhouse right on site (HOLY COW)
7) The hotel is very reasonable for great rooms (stayed in a large suite with kitchenette 2 years in a row)
8) The Ultramarine Cafe for breakfast or late dinner. Ok... its across the road and called the Omega but we all now it is a Guilliman front

As a newbie to the event, it really depends how passionate you are about competing. The 40k championships & the team tournamet are two of the biggest and best "showcase" events in the world. OTOH, it's an exhausting schedule if you're playing all-day, every day, and you don't get to see much else. I would recommend signing up for Combat Patrol, or possibly Kill Team, which are small-scale games which are supposed to be a lot of fun. And I would consider taking one day "off", not playing but spending it attending hobby seminars, walking around, spectating at the alll the different events, checking out the gorgeous painting competition, etc.
