Hey everyone, I'm (obviously) new here. I'm just starting to wet my feet in the Warhammer hobby (particularly in 40k) - did a little research on it a year ago, but found some free time to get into it this fall, and playing Space Marine kinda pushed me in fully. I just bought Assault on Black Reach with a buddy today, actually, after much consideration of what chapter to focus on, so I'm looking forward to getting the whole shebang operational and playing some games! I also play Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, so Warhammer was the next step for me to complete what I consider the Holy Trinity of fine "geeky" games.

For starters I'm building an army of Ultramarines, starting with the Black Reach materials and some odds-n-ends I bought off Kijiji last year. The next army I'd like to build is the Grey Knights - read the first book in their Omnibus by Ben Counter and I love the idea behind them. After that I want to try Fantasy with a warband of Chaos Warriors, and then LOTR, to try all three GW lines out. In the meantime I'll surely be picking brains for tips and help - I've never done such fine work with my hands before, so at times certain hobby aspects seem a tad daunting to me.

Well, mainly the Black Reach army, so 585. I'm going to make another 10-man Tac squad out of the old stuff I've got, so another 170 points + some additional options. My next purchases will be an Assault Squad, and then Marneus Calgar. Eventually I'll get a substitute HQ for the basic BR option, probably the Chief Librarian. At least, that's the plan I'm thinking of right now.

Welcome newcomer
Enjoy your stay!

Calgar is a solid choice. He allows you to have a good beatstick unit.

All around he looks pretty awesome - from lore to abilities, plus the option to take three squads of tanks. He seems to be a common option for new players, but he also seems to have the goods to back it up.

Well, I'm not actively planning those armies, but I do know what I would do if someone walked up to me and gave me money to buy a brand new army... but it wouldn't take me very long to pick out what I'd like for each, lol. Maybe it's my newcomer's naivete....

Though I may be the Emperor's servant now, that might very well change in the future...

Welcome to Dakka! Space Marines are a good starter army, the only problem that you might have is that ALOT of people play SM.
Other than that, its good that you have planned ahead with your armies
