I'd rather that than 30K.
I have no issue with the Horus Heresy in the fluff, but it doesn't really allow much room for anyone non-imperial.
Maybe in 50K the IOM will have been driven back enough for something more interesting to happen in the other parts of the universe, like other Xeno races expanding etc..

My friends and I like to ponder this concept. However, I could see this getting heated.
I'll put in my two cents... Keep in mind the OP asked what I'd like.
I imagine it as if they'd be creating interesting models to acompany an unsuported game .
The Tyranids dominate space. They bring about a new dark age, in which the Imperium and all other races struggle to travel the stars. The warp it would be in complete turbulance as the hive mind pushes back its influence. The EoT becomes an ironic safehaven to the galaxy as the Tyranids begin to avoid it. They reach a coldly, calulated conclusion that the warp hole is a bit too complicated to contend with for the time being.
The previous hive fleets were just fingers of a hand. The hand grasped the heart of the galaxy over time, splitting most of the Ultima Segmentum from the other 3rd of the Imperium. Becoming overwhelmed by the Tyranids the Ultramarines and several of their subsequent sucsessor chapters (along with other first foundings who had been in that area during earlier Tyranid engagements), they made a new pact with the suffering Adeptus Mechanicus to use any and all resorces to continue the fight.
The Imperial half of the galaxy had no choice but to surround Holy Terra and her neighboring worlds and defend her to the last. So to did the forces of Chaos, fleeting to the Eye as their shelter.
The Orks... thrived. To the Orks this was RagnarOrk! The Great WAAAGH!!! The endtimes had come! And who was held chosen to be the great herald of Gork and Mork?! None other than Gazz himself. The Green Beast of Armaggedon who had years ago crushed the human world to dust. Most of Gazz had been replaced with some MadDoc tune-ups over the years. Through his leadership the Waaagh! took on dimentions never before witnessed. Multipule forgeworlds felt to his rule (though in secret a few Tech Magi felt perhaps the new bionic Gazz might be a new Omnissia).
In time the the tyranid hand began to move and behind it streached the arm. It turned the center of the galaxy into a passing school of hive fleets. It was apparent that they would never end. The hive fleets, so vast and slow, took their time and slowly expanded as the arm became the body. By now the "Silent One" (this new Necron fluff actually helps with our playthinking alittle) has returned and informed as many Necron Lords possible that it would be more benificial to save these minor races and demand tribute for their help.
The Ultramarines/Mechanicus of the eastern side of the stars has become a titanically powerful force. But not powerful enough. Without the use of warp travel the fight begins to look over. Then the Tau arrive! The attempt negotiations with the Ultracanicus which to their extreme surprise, are taken immediately and accepted. The new Tau'Ultracanicus becomes an insane blend of power armoured, steath suited, railgun blazzin', chain drone usin', marker-lit lascannon, krootox riddin', crisis suit with power weaponin' riding in dreadnought piloted titans!!!
The factions are as follows: Tau'Ultracanicus, The Imperial Sphere, The Eye of Terror, The Necron Empire (and friends), Orks and Tyranids.
The Eldar and Dark Eldar are not included. They were wise enough to fleet to the Webway. It is there they battled a bitter war that ulimately resulted in Slaanesh consuming them all. This leaves the Webway open to Chaos. But something new has happened! Like his birthcry, when Slaanesh at last consumed the Eldar, he gave a joyous, orgasmic howl of godlike levels and tore open the Webway at all its openings!! The great flood of power blasted the Webway clear of the influence of Chaos. But for how long? No matter, The Grey Knights were ready. Allied with the Adeptus Custodes the Gate behind the Golden Throne was cast open!
The game would revolve around all the factions fleeing to the Webway. Webways would be the objectives of the battle field while new and strange looking units would battle to gain entry. Tyranids would be like a neutral faction on the battle field like terrain (or maybe such missions would require a thrid person (like I said. An unsupported game ).

Well I'd say Deffdread, you've definately thought about this!
I'll just add my two cents to your idea.
If all eldar are dead, then by the fluff Ynnead should rise and defeat slaanesh...
Personally I think the necrons would have no problem stemming the tyranids. Although the nid's are "numberless", they can only keep going as long as they absorb enough biomatter. If a numberless nid horde gets stopped by a numberless necron horde, I think the necrons would win.
Also, wouldn't the nids just try to avoid necron worlds? No biomatter there for sure. I think that would lead to the necrons actually having more influence than the nids. There will be battles between thelm, but in the end, wouldn't the nids just eat everything (apart from the eye I suppose) then move on to another galaxy, leaving the necrons free reign in this one?
Also one more question: how does the imperium not starve if they're only defending terra and it's close neighbours?

My only major problem with Deffdred's idea, is that by 50k Im pretty sure Ghaz would be dead by then. Ive never heard that Orks live forever, and somewhere, I believe Ive heard they can live a couple hundred years at best. But a "Great WAAAAAH!" would certainly be at hand during his time line. With the other major factions falling back to hold onto what is theirs they certainly wouldnt have the man power to hold Orks back anymore. And with an unlimited number of Nids to fight, and worlds to take over, yea, there would be a new "Ghaz" and probably a much stronger one at that.

This is how I have thought out this subject:
The Tyranids have invaded much of the Imperium. They have devoured most of the Ultima Segmentum, and are pushing towards Sector Solar. The Imperium of Man has regained some hope, since Leman Russ has returned from the Warp, carrying the technology required to repair the Throne. No one knows how, but it seems that he has somehow ventured back in time during his search, in order to learn from the scientists of the Dark Age. (maybe a bit too much of a pie in the sky.) The technology has been tested on Roboute Guilliman (Rowboat Girlyman), and he is recovering at an increasing rate. With this knowledge, the Emperor himself might be revived.
During these desperate times, the Imperial Cult has lost much of its authority, and the Imperium has secularised a bit, and thus it has ceased to engage other races so eagerly. In fact, other races can now negotiate with it, as all help against the Tyranids is accepted. The Tau were the first to fall againt the Tyranids. They tried to request aid from the Imperium, but before it could help, the Tau were no more. The Eldar have died out, and Ynnead has born. It has defeated Slaanesh as predicted, and now tries to stabilise the warp. It struggles to defeat the other gods, and (maybe) close the Eye of Terror. Tzeench is allied with this god, for his plan to usurp the other gods has finally a chance to succeed. Inside the Warp, they battle each other, and few daemons exit the Immaterium.
The Dark Eldar are pretty much the same as before. When Slaanesh died, they stopped raiding and retired to the Warp. They are an isolated band of malcontent and bitter raiders, who rarely leave their city of Comorragh. Because of mindless bloodshed and slaughter in their realm, they are also slowly dying out.
The Orks were delighted to finally have worthy opponents. As numberless and brutal as the Tyranids, they are waging a constant battle with them, and for the comfort of the other races, slowing their advance with sheer numbers. Many Ork Waaaghs ventured into the planets swarming with Tyranids, and engaged them. They battle each other to this day, and have locked them in combat.
(I won't bother with the Necrons, because their fluff is about to change with the new Codex. If they are still mindless, they will be like always. If not, then maybe they will try to destroy the Tyranids as well and maybe ally with the other races. Just remember them and BA.)
Many smaller races are now allied with the Imperium, and they fight together against the Tyrranids which escape the Ork blockade. The future seems uncertain, for both the Tyranids and the Orks are actually getting stronger. The Tyranids have endless biomass, and the Orks have are multiplying so rapidly that they rival the number of the Tyranids.
And finally, a thing I thought about yesterday:
It was revealed that when the Horus Heresy occurred 20 millenia ago, the Dark Angels were a traitor chapter. The Fallen were actually loyal marines who the "real" fallen hunted. Cypher was their leader, and sought to return the Sword of Lion to the Emperor. His fate is unknown. The Watchers in the Dark are the souls of the loyal Marines, and they protect the sleeping Lion from the traitors. The traitors themselves were unaware that they are actually kiling loyal marines, and that they are technically the traitors. In fact, both factions are more or less loyal. Should Lion ever awaken, he would accuse the chapter of heresy, and the Watchers in the Dark could finally have rest.

I'd like to see the IoM pushed back into a smaller sphere of influence, the Imperium itself collapse and a development of Human tech emerge in it's wake. Toss off xenophobia and we could see combined Tau, Eldar, and Human forces. Fighting off nids, crons, Orks, DE, and chaos with a more desperate but also more hopeful fight against disorder.

Humanity continues to fight valiantly against the never-ending hordes assaulting them. The Tau put up a good fight, but are ultimately eaten by the Tyranids. Then, the Golden Throne finally breaks. The Emperor dies. But, this just means his soul is freed from its tether and unleashed into the Warp. He quickly kills the Chaos gods, fixes the eye of terror, wipes out the hordes of Daemons, and stabilizes the warp. With the Emperor dead, the Imperium no longer has to sacrifice 10,000 psykers a day. This lets psykers become much more prevalent in IG armies, and they quickly prove how useful they can be. Before long, the IoM is turning back the tide of Tyranids and Necrons. Orks are still a constant menace, but are manageable. The common people see how useful psykers are, and become more and more hostile to the Inquisition. Before long, they rise up in open revolt, the Inquisition is overthrown, and democracy spreads throughout the Imperium. With Slaanesh dead, the Eldar and Dark Eldar are able to re-unite and work to rebuild their Empire. They are free once again to operate unhindered by the constant threat of Slaanesh. The Emperor's spirit continues to stabilize the Galaxy. He manipulates the fabric of the warp to control the Waaagh and therefor the Orks. He sends massive waves of orks against the Tyrandis and Necrons and manages to wipe them from the Galaxy. He then severs all power of the Waaagh and leaves the Orks totally helpless and lacking all interstellar travel. Finally, the Galaxy is at peace. The Unified Eldar Empire has a few conflicts with the United Federation of Planets (formally known as the Imperium of Man). But, they eventually open diplomatic channels, and begin trading with one another. The Eldar share their advanced technology, while Humans share their vast resources. By the year 50k, there is no more war. Peace and prosperity have spread throughout the Galaxy. The Emperor, having finally achieved his dream, reincarnates on an insignificant rural planet to relax and retire in peace.

I love the Tau'Ultracanicus idea! Anyways, what I think/hope happens is the tyranids come with their ultimate nom nom-ing hive fleet, which houses the hive mind, supreme ruler of the tyranids. By this point, the necrons are the most powerful faction, having fully arisen and had the remaining C'tan at full power (except the void dragon). These two titanic forces clash, and the result is that the C'tan, along with the hive mind, are destroyed. The necron fleets are in disarray, but with the death of the C`tan, sentience returns to all the necrons. The warriors and lower crons become as they were, with the lords absorbing the knowledge of their slain masters. The lords realise the danger still possibly presented by the now-slowed tyranids, who are incapable of generating a synapse. Every remaining ship in the necron armada now chases the tyranids from the galaxy, continuing the purge of their kind for all of time. However, they will have severely damaged the Imperium in the process. The realm of man is shattered, leaving a galaxy full of isolated human worlds. Their weak minds have been left vulnerable to chaos, which proceeds to conquer vast reaches of the galaxy. The power vacuum on the eastern front has left the Tau a powerful faction, one of, if not THE most powerful on their side of the galaxy. Having discovered the secrets of inertialess travel, they are now the most mobile faction, yet they stick to their policy of small, dense spheres centred around their homeworld. The orks have likewise been decimated by the Necron/Tyranid war, but have also been concentrated into one single, unstoppable Waaagh! This small small but concentrated gathering of orkish strength lacks the size to spread terror beyond their immediate vicinity, but no force can match this one army. The Imperium has been forced to retreat to the Segmentum solar, holding less than a fifth of the territory it once did, but has taken control of nearly every planet there, leaving them with an incredibly dense kingdom, with a solid border. The demands of war has long since killed off the last of the space marines. However, the mechanicus still hold the geneseed of these mighty warriors, and has used a much less selective process for selecting candidates. The result, there are more SM than there have ever been, but they have become morally degenerate, brutal killing machines who fight to kill, rather than for the Emperor. The Eldar's long awaited creation of Ynnead has come to pass, but in the process of it's birth, the souls of every Eldar was consumed, eliminating the Craftworld, Exodite and Dark Eldar. The titanic battle between Slaanesh and Ynnead destroys them both. The Imperium's degenerate Space Marines leave much to be desired, and so the process of creating custodes has been resumed. With the new custodians guarding the palace, the 10,000 original custodes, still lead by Valdor, set about hunting down the final ork Waaagh! As only they, with their experience from Ullanor, could. Stupid, I know.

Rather than 50K, itd be awesome if every new edition they updated like 100-1000 years, so we can advance our storyline a bit as the game gets older.

They sorta did this where in the 90s every year the plot advanced a year, but then they got to the end of 39,999 or so and didn't know what to do, since going past 40k is kind of a no-no when that's the name of your setting.
I wouldn't want them to advance the plot that far since any characters we know would almost definitely be dead, and we'd know the end of all the stories that are left hanging now. Much of the 40k setting is so compelling because it's left so vague.

The way i see it, a couple hundred years isnt going to make too much of a difference. Considering a new edition comes out around every 5 years, it would take 50 years to finally make it past the 41st millenium.
