BT uses the Codex Astartes as toilet paper. They’re an Imp Fist successor, recruit from multiple planets, and are known to be the largest Chapter in the galaxy. They’re on a constant Crusade, keeping it real for the Emperor and not bumming around like the other guys. They hate psykers and can’t ally with them. They’re basically an entire chapter of Chaplains. CC lunatics. What every Space Marine should aspire to be, if not trapped in a Matt Ward nightmare

Great tutorial, gotta say though when the "burrows" were being put on i felt like it was a shameless plug, but i have to agree they add alot of character to the finished project.

While these are pleasing to the eye and extremely well crafted, I think there is something to be said for actually playing on the first hill. When there is a complicated multi-assault taking place on the craggy hill... get ready to make full use of the "wobbly model syndrome" rules.
That all aside... they are absolutely fantastic looking, albeit a little impractical.

First of all this is an old school way or making terrain (model railroads, dioramas etc.) done by many hobbyists years ago. There is no reason anyone can not do this kind of terrain, but for years people have been droned in on what is cool and what should be "the correct way" of making terrain.
Or Let's go buy incredibly expensive, pre-made terrain because the corporation of your choice says its Cool!
I commend the OP for the article and hope he continues to make more interesting terrain articles. This is good stuff to be shared to all at this site.

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

I've received a lot of comments from people prefering "shelf-like" hills for the ease of gameplay, this is fine and I'm not judging (Yes I am, you might as well play on stacks of books! I've earned my snobbery dammit!) so in order to show that a good balance can be struck between style and function, I added a few pictures of some plateau hills I made, which in my opinion are easy to play on and still look nice. I'm so glad someone recognizes old-school tricks, and I too hope it catches on and my current and upcoming articles and tutorials are geared towards getting people to doing their own work, and not settling for mediocre just because the big companies say it's acceptable. Terrain should be like your figures, loved and nurtured! Not literally! That's just wrong! Automatically Appended Next Post: Ratius wrote:Very very cool!

Because there is some initial investment in MDF board, tub of spackle, bag of bark Etc, it can be pricey depending on where you shop, but assuming you have absolutely no tools or supplies, less than $100.00 should get you a table's worth of terrain and the tools to make more. I'm looking into putting together terrain kits with pre-cut bases, small tubs of filler, bark and other things to help get people started making terrain like this on the cheap.

Your hills are simply stunning. I think they would be major show stopper for most terrain tables in 40k.
do you have any hills you use for WHFB? You hills seem Rank and File UNFRIENDLY for moving trays over them.
I know you can simply make them wider etc.. was just wondering if you had examples with tray son them etc...

I'm going to have to borrow some WHFB units and make some hills just as an example, so the short answer is no, but challenge accepted.

Beautiful hills! Simply stellar. I am going to try this later when I get an Imperial Bastion, and some small bits. I can't wait to try this, I'll post pictures.

Great stuff man. I consider myself and yourself artists of scenery. The game mechanics are important but the scenery must be breathtaking. I rather play on a gorgeous field of scenery then rank and file uniform hills and poorly painted scenery. I commend you and will be implementing some of your ideas in my next large build.

These are more closer to a set design than a simply terrain. I can't image a different choice for a "serious player".. ohh sorry..I forgot .. you can play with unpainted minis. 8)
