I have about 4000 points of chaos space marines. After setting it all up on a table and looking at it for a while... I decided that it wasn't big enough for me to be happy with it
When do you think an army becomes 'big'? Is it a matter of how many points you have, or is there more to it? Do big models have anything to do with it? Thanks!

Depends on the basic costs of your units.
For example.
Havinf 100 Tactical marines with bolters is alot
having 100 gaurdsmen with lasguns isn't alot.
I have 550 gaurdsmen, 7 LRMBTs, 1 Vanquisher, 3 Basilisks, 6 Chims, 3 baneblades, 1 Valkrie, 5 Sentinels 20+ Heavy weapons, 50 officers/sgts, 70 special weapons troopers, 3 converted hyrdas, and a manticore
I started off looking at the 3rd ed rulebook picture of the 'Big' IG army and was like WOW. I want one that big.
Then I wanted to field 2000 pts of all infantry in 4th.
Now I look at my 2 table spanning army and just ask myself "How in the hell did my army get this big?"

I have enough bloodpact troopers, HW teams and other things to fill a tabel. If I include my super heavies and air cav I have enough for a tabel and a half. I would call a army big if you need several cases just for rank and file. Althou this may differe betwen the different kind of armies.

I'll consider my Word bearers Army big when I have around 100 marines, and a suitable amount of daemons for them to summon.

When you can't fit it all on a 6 by 6 foot table
My orks literally won't fit on the table (allowing an inch around each unit to be able to tell the units apart (as i'm still not done painting them all ). I have a shade over 18000 pts of the fungal little beasties.
OR
When you are playing Ogre Kingdoms/ MC spam Nids.
The model count may not be huge, but the army is BIG
|
The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

My chaos army is...
A daemon prince
Two terminators lords
Sorcerer
Cypher
Ahriman
x15 Terminators
Dreadnought
50 or so CSM
10 berskerkers
50 or so Plague marines
Four Rhinos
2 Bikers
5 raptors
Two land raiders
Defiler
Vindicator
Lots of havocs
It doesn't sound big at all on paper. I'm thinking I definitely have room to grow. Maybe another forty berserkers, another 15 terminators, four more land raiders, three predators, nine obliterators, two vindicators, two dreadnoughts, 15 raptors, 8 bikers, fifty thousand sons and then I'll be done

Big really depends on the kind of army. If you have a horde army I think "big" would come a lot sooner then if you were running an elite low model count army.
Also this thread needs a poll.

This is purely based on perspective, the specific army, and the local metagame. For example, with all those factors in place, I would call a 2500 point DE army big, but I wouldn't consider a 2500 GK or Eldar army big. But I might consider a 2000 point Ork army big, or Nids if they're buiilt for horde.

Your army needs to be 4000+ points with super heavies to be considered big.
I have just about a hundred models in my 13th Company. A Quarter is Fenrisian Wolves so I'll say that's small. Minuscule actually.

It depends - some armies I like to have 'snapshots' of - like my blood angels 4th company crusading knights of baal, or salamander 2nd company.
For fantasy I tend to just expand until i got mental. Similarly with necrons. Will do the same with dark eladar
