I need some tips on how to base my nids. I really want to do something interesting for the army as a whole. I got about 130ish models to base (most of em are gants), so I need something that
1: compliments my colour scheme
2: does not require much time per model (or I wont be finished before 2013)
3: looks cool
Here is the colour scheme I use (These models are not mine, but belongs to a gentleman and a scholar)
Sola Fide.
- 5000p. White Scars 6th Brotherhood
- 3000p. Cadre St Loke
- 500p. Hive Fleet Naglfar
Get some cork and layer/paint it in a stone-y colour.. maybe add some flock grass? would take a bit of time for 130 models but it would pay off... besides, once you get going the process becomes quicker. One disadvantage would be that you would need to cut the models from the bases (to rest them on top of the rocks) so maybe that's not an option.
You can always go for sand, patches of grass, maybe even urban by creating a gravel look with small stones.
But yeah, for 130 models, some flock of a preferred colour/texture would be the easiest way to go.
I just look for something I like, and then get creative from there (for instance, my skaven use the marshland basing guide, but I've added bits of ruins to the base so it looks like they are marching through the ruins of a city slowly sinking into a mire).
If you want something quick-and-dirty, perhaps don't go so wild as that and just paint something based on what is in there... Personally looking at your colour scheme, I would go with maybe a jungle or mudland base?
And that is why you hear people yelling FOR THE EMPEROR rather than FOR LOGICAL AND QUANTIFIABLE BASED DECISIONS FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE MAJORITY!

Well, normally Tyranid colours have something to do with the colours of the terrain they live in. So maybe you should do a desert/canyon themed base? so just add some bigger rocks to the base (about twice the size of the sand used on the base right now), and paint it another colour.

You could try this. Its cheap, and easy. Great podcast too.
I am going to use this method to make some xenomorph terrain and some all black nids, have guardsmen hanging with their chests bursted. I did some tests and looks really good.

Every Dakkanaught gets a 4+ Pinch of Salt save.
When you suffer a Falling Sky hit, roll a D6 - on a 4+ the hit is ignored as per the Pinch of Salt save. On a 1-3 panic insues - you automatically fail common sense tests for the next 2 weeks and get +7 to your negativity stat. -Praxiss
