What genre? That would help narrow it down.
Assuming 18th Century monster hunters are of interest. You could try "A Touch of Evil" http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=244205

Those look cool. I'll have to see about those.
I'm looking for fantasy and sci-fi. Stuff that resembles WHFB and 40K would be a good start. Stuff with the same scale hopefully.

Scifi is much harder to answer then Fantasy, there are a ton of fantasy games out with great minis.
For Scifi I'd try either Tanhauser or Dust.

This isn't a boardgame, but as it is a recently released skirmish game there aren't a lot of minis available yet. It is a fantasy version of Japan. http://www.bushido-thegame.com/factions
Also part of the fantasy Japan genre Okko: Era of the Asagiri is a boardgame. Miniatures can be purchased separately. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/29602/okko-era-of-the-asagiri

Piggybacking on this thread, what about that Doom boardgame from a few years ago?
|
"Well, isn't the enemy of your enemy, like, your friend? Or whatever? Can't they team up?"
"Not exactly. In this setting, the enemy of your enemy is still a floating, greasy, armored brain."
"Well, what about his enemy? Maybe you could be friends with him."
"No, because that guy is a mechanical horror in an undying battle shell. He sails from world to world in a flying tomb, serving gods who eat hope."

Seconding this, I'm sometimes tempted to buy it for the miniatures.
Game itself is quite nice but the group already has it and all it's expansions so there would be no other reason for me to get it but to paint up.

Super Dungeon Explore. Tons of minis.
The exagerrated heads and hands are basically GW style too, right?
The D&D adventure games (Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon, and I'm assuming Legend of Drizzt too) have a lot of nice minis too. Same with Descent.

I would say Descent is good for painting, but the heroes are a bit all over in scale.
Also, DOOM has some great figures in it, especially creepy demon types.
Battlelore has good stuff in it, but it is at an odd scale. Some feel almost 15mm, while others look around 25mm.
Incursion is technically a boardgame, but the available models are all metals. 28-32mm scale, I think
The newer D&D boardgames have solid minis in them. Basically color coded unpainted versions of their collectable minis.
Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon, and Legend of Drizzt.
All have about 6 heros, and a handfull of "Villains" that tend to be characterful and/or larger.
Ravenloft has a Dracolich, Ashardalon a Dragon, and I think Drizzt has a Pit Fiend.
FFG also has Chaos in the Old World, which has tokens that could be painted if you are so inclined.

Another question on Doom: are they hard plastic figures? For some reason I feel like someone told me they're bendy rubbery types that don't hold paint well.

The FFG Doom game has the softer plastic, like d&d minis. Its the same as Descent has.
It takes paint fairly well. And as long as you put a good clearcoat on last, it takes a beating.
Don't go bending figs on purpose, and things should be fine.

Played Fortune and Glory yesterday. The adventurer figures are decent (as in average) as are some of the Nazi villains, but the bulk of the figures are mobsters or Nazi soldiers and are pretty static sculpts. (Both use SMGs and it is hard to tell them apart other than the hats). There is a Zeppelin and a number of temples, which are nice, but not always used.
As for the game itself, I enjoyed it. Very Indiana Jones-ish. One can play competitive against other players, or co- op against the system. We played both, I won (with an amazing amount of beginner's luck) the competitive game, then we lost the co- op against the Nazis. (Two player is really tough in co- op; we did not have enough actions to keep the Nazis in check.)
Not the best boardgame for its miniatures, but if you like the theme and view the minis as a bonus, then it is worth checking out.

I absolutely love the Flying Frog Productions games.
A Touch of Evil was mentioned above, but they also do
Last Night on Earth - the zombie game
Zombies attacking a small town.
http://www.flyingfrog.net/lastnightonearth/
Invasion From Outer Space - the martian game
Martians (ala Mars Attacks style) attacking a 50's carnival,
all the characters are interchangeable with LNoE
http://www.flyingfrog.net/invasionfromouterspace/
and Fortune and Glory - the cliffhanger game
I haven't picked this one up yet - its on order at my FLGS,
but it's basically 30's style pulp heroes going around the world fighting Nazis and finding treasure, Indiana Jones inspired.

Runewars if great. the minis are actuelly larger than I'm used to, since I play 10-15mm almost always. Battles of Westeros is good. Fantasy flight games is pretty much the 800 pound gorilla of board games and their components.

I'm a little late to this party, but they are the same miniatures used in Runebound and Descent, if you have either of those. Obviously some are different, but a lot are the same.

If you like fantasy you should check out Dark World. That comes with loads of nice stuff. It has a bunch of heroes, choas lord, a spectre, an MC, at least 4 ogres, and the usual pile of orks, skeletons and mummies. All the pieces are quite charming. It also has a really neat board and a huge chaos alter/building thing.
I see it quite a lot on ebay, it's usually cheap since it's not GW, so most people who would like it, don't know about it/aren't looking for it.
