Hey guys, if this has been answered elsewhere, I apologize, but I just couldn't find an it.

How do you guys peg your model pieces for painting? I've seen in videos on Youtube and in various tutorials that painters use thin wood rods (I'm assuming toothpicks), but how do you get them to stick to the piece?

What I've personally been doing is getting sewing needles and carefully driving them into the plastic (inserting where no one will see the hole...*snicker*), but this has become pretty difficult with certain pieces (Space Marine bags) and impossible with thin pieces (Space Marine shoulders).

I've considered hand-drilling holes into the plastic and inserting a rod, but does that really hold the piece in place when spraying and hand-painting?

yes it does, drill a hole, then shove a toothpick in it, because the toothpick is tapered it wedges quite nicely. ON occasion with metal figs I will use a drop of super glue to hold everything.

Thanks, I'll try that next. My only concern with that, however, are really thin pieces like SM shoulders, where they're maybe 1/8" thick.

Has anyone experiment with some kind of tacking solution beyond superglue? Maybe poster-mounting tack like 3M makes?

meh.....it is not worth the time, just assemble then paint, unless it is a unique shoulder for an HQ, dont bother.

Maybe it's because it's my first 40k fig, but I'm really anal about the paint process. I'm half-way through painting all but the shoulders and pouches (which haven't been primed yet because of my pegging problem), so assembling's not really an option at the moment. In the future I may consider it.

I just use a spare length of sprue, and _lightly_ glue it to the back of the bit I'm painting.

If gluing parts doesnt work then try blue/white tack, same sort of concept but its reusable

This seems like the way to go.

Tac is good for this. Won't damage the paint or the bit, and it's reusable.

really desperate, glue. Don't wanna super glue it? Elmers/PVA glue.

This is an excellent formula for "burnout" if you try to be that anal for every model you paint, you willl, at some point, quit this hobby. It is a great technique for hq's and one-offs but not units.

What kind of tac do you use? Just the everyday 3M stuff you can find at a Walmart for hanging posters?

That looks damn handy, I'll have to look into picking one up sometime.

I kinda realized this after spending over a dozen hours research painting/modeling techniques and about 2-3 hours just getting to the first basecoat and wash stage of my first fig. I'm prone to burnout but can't help getting really intense about the first time I try something new.

My plan is to finish this first model (being as anal as I am), and burn through a few test models trying various simplified painting techniques. I'm hoping to hit that sweet spot of confidence in my painting where I can churn out a few models at a time without such a huge time committment.

Great, thanks! I'll see about picking some up after work and giving it a try

No problem, glad to help.

I tend to always tac the bits onto a paint pot that im not using, gives plenty of room for the tac and also gives you something a bit easier to grip.

I use toothpicks both with and without super glue. I've found under certain instances pieces of wooden dowel rods work well too.

During our United Way charity drive they gave out these little blocks with a piece of wire and aligator clip on them. I grabbed everyone I could find. They make great holding fixtures.

Picked up this product at Walmart yesterday and used it in combination with toothpicks to spray primer on some Space Marine shoulders. The price on Amazon is currently $4.98, but I picked it up in-store for $1.98 (without discount), so shop around.

It worked pretty damn well and doesn't seem to leave much by way of residue, but I'd suggest wiping the area with some water afterwards (just to be sure). Haven't tested its application on paint yet, but that'll be the next step.

One thing to watch out for is that it can get kinda "stringy", like bubblegum, when being pulled apart. Don't know how typlical this is for tac, as I rarely used it in the past, but just something to watch out for when preparing models (ya probably don't want thin ribbons of this gunk getting on painting models).
