Scan down for some of the new work I've finally got round to!

Hi all,

I'm a long time wargamer who has been playing various GW games going right back to the mid-80s. About 6 months ago I discovered daakadaaka and other online wargaming comunities and have been amazed and inspired by the armies on display. I've decided to share my latest project with you in the hope of getting some feedback and help. Though I've been gaming for a long time, I've always focused on the gaming aspect and not so much on the painting and modelling. My last project, a tyranid army, say me improve in that area by picking a simple but effective colour schemes and doing some basic conversions. I now want to try and improve my skills, especially my greatest fear - painting skin!

So what are 'The League of Discapable Gentleman'? They are a traitor guard argument with a (not very original) twist. I have always loved zombies but did not want to make a Nurgle Guard army as there are already much better ones about like ChanktheLank'shttp://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/327536.page. I am going to therefore delve deep into the 40k archives and make a zombie army based on the old Necromunda character Karloth Valois. I've always loved Valois' story and imagery so will be breaking him out of the underhive, teaming him up with some henchman and raising zombie hell.

Here are some early images, I will hopefully follow with some painted figures tomorrow:

Some general zombies. These will make up the guardsman and be fielded in squads of 20-30 as powerblobs. These are a mish mash of Cadian, Catachan and zombie bits.

Some zombies with special weapons.

These are my first attempts at veterans. These will be the 'dispicable gentlemen' who have teamed up with Valois. They are based on Cadians and are my first ever attempt at large scale green stuff work. Though they are pretty basic, I'm fairly pleased with them for a first attempt. I am, however, going solely on instinct with the green stuff so any advice would be much appreciated.

And finally, here is Karloth himself. I managed to pick him up on eBay for £7.50 which seemed very good. I've seen him go for a lot more. I'm not entirely sure how to paint him yet.

I like the hats!

Its an interesting project you've got going on.

Whilst I'm no pro with greenstuff myself, the picture of the despicable gents looks like the greenstuff's been applied quite thickly and isn't completely smooth which is one thing that is noticable once painted - however its really easy to see if it is or not even when a single layer of undercoat is applied so its easy to sort out (if that is the case).

Can't wait to see more!

Thanks Roy! You are completely right - the GS is very thick. I was looking DexterKong's Inquisitor blog (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/401609.page) and he seems to have applied it much more thinly. Mine look rather like they are wearing duvets rather than trenchcoats. I am hopefully going to try a few more of these when I get some more Cadian parts. Any other tips on how to smooth it out would be great. Are there any useful tools?

Late last night and this morning I finally plucked up the courage to do some painting. I found this thread very helpful http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/321597.page. Here are the results:

To start with I did an undercoat of Chaos Black, followed by Khemri Brown on the flesh.

I then followed it up with a dry brushing of Rotting Flesh, Leviathan Purple was and then another coat of Rotting Flesh. The uniforms and wounds are very simple - just Catachan Green and a combination of Scab Red and Blood Red. I've not quite finished them as I didn't have an appropriate brown for their boots etc. I hope to pick up something today and paint another batch tonight. C&C welcome.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Pretty much finished the first batch of zombies this evening. I'm hoping to start a 'counts as a comissar' model over the weekend.

This is the whole batch so far, below are a couple of close ups:

Hi all,

I've taken a long break from posting whilst I procrastinated about how to create the veterans I posted pictures of last time. Unhappy with my green stuff skills I decided against trying to sculpt them like this:

Instead I ordered a box of Wargames Factory Shock Troopers which have an excellent trench coat look similar to what I wanted to achieve but couldn't. I picked these up for £16.50 on ebay and am very pleased with them. Though the quality of casting is not quite as high as GW, they certainly look a lot more interesting than either the Cadians or Catachans. They also have a fair bit of variety on the sprue and are good value for money as there are 18 in a box. The only problem I forsee with them is that, as non-GW models, I may have some problems using them in a game (my nearest place to game is GW Oxford Street).

To make them fit with the Karloth Valois image, I'm planning to use the same heads as before but want to get some feedback before I rush ahead. As such, here is a test model I put together with blu tac this afternoon. He would be the squad sergeant. C&C much appreciated, assuming you can make anything out in the crappy picture!

Merry Christmas all!

Being a teacher, the hols are one of the main times I get for modelling so I've finally got to get a few things done that I've been wanting to for awhile. I've a few little bits to finish but the main focus of my work has been my verteran squad. I've yet to decide how to paint them but will probably go for black trenchcoats and hats so they look suitably undertaker-esque. Here are the pictures as they stand so far:

And here is the full group. There was initially 10, but two of the heads fell off prior to taking this picture and will have to be redone:

Hopefully over Christmas I will get to finish these and work on some character figures and possibly a heavy weapons squad.

Thanks for looking!

Here is a commissar figure I have bashed together from a number of different kits. The arms are from the Forgeworld renegade enforcers kit. I have found these an absolute nightmare to put together. The powermaul our man is holding eventually had to be wrapped with green stuff to make it fit but I hope it doesn't look too awful. The powerswords are even more difficult to fit together so I haven't fully constructed any of these yet.

I have also started making a squad of stormtroopers or ghasts as will be calling them. This reminds me that I really must work on some fluff for this army. I have a lot of ideas floating around in my head but need to put it onto paper in a concrete form. At the moment, however, I am wondering if I should move more towards a nurgle themed army to bring it more in line with standard GW storylines.

Thanks for looking!

After a long break between posts I finally have some new work to post - and its all gone a bit Necromunda!

Over the last few months there has been a proliferation of inspiring Necromunda and Imunda threads that have simply blown me away. Necromunda has always been my favourite game system though, due to it falling out of favour, I have not been able to play it in probably 10 years. Given this and my interminable slowness at producing a 40k army I decided that I would jump on the bandwagon and poduce some models that I can use in both Necromunda (if I can find a game) or 40k. As my army is already based around Karloth Valois this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

My two favourite Necromunda blogs have been the scavvy blogs by PDH and Ghostflame. I had long thought of doing a scavvy gang using ghoul models but could never think how to do it until I saw their amazing work here:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/309038.page
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/427093.page

I would love to quote Newton and say that I have only seen further because I am standing on the shoulders of giants, but, given my meagre talents, I feel I may end up just crawling around under their armpits. Nevertheless, I owe those two a huge debt and hope they don't mind me ripping off so many of their wonderful ideas.

So here are my first scavvy efforts. When playing 40k I will likely use them as penal legionnaires which I think they will fit quite well as. Following Ghostflame's guide these use a combination of mainly ghoul, ork, grot and zombie parts. The bases are from forgecraft games.

These ones are the obligatory PDH scavvy grot rip offs. I love these simplistic but effective conversions.

This one uses an ork body and the cojoined heads from the fantastic chaos mutations sprue. I am currently short of ork parts but plan to use a few more of these with the rest of the mutations sprue as they fit really well and a bit of bulk to the gang.

And finally, stealing another idea from Ghostflame, this is my take on a scavvy chef/bone collector:

Thanks for looking! I will hopefully be able to get some painting done this weekend and update again soon.

Great! Love seeing all the fantastic 'munda blogs on Dakka. Would love to see some more of the necromantic things you could come up with for Valois. You should check out some of Wyrd Miniatures' undead line!

@Two Spartan - Thank you, kit bashes are great fun but they do take awhile and make a lot of sprue related mess.

@Jackanory - I have finished painting Valois and some of his minions and will post some pictures tomorrow. When I play 40k I plan as using him as Creed due to the massive number of orders he can lay down ('Move, move, move' becomes 'Vanhel's Danse Macabre' etc). I was thinking of making a Frankenstein figure to represent Kell. I also have some undead bodyguards to go with the command squad.

@Ghostflame - Thanks for your comments and the inspiration. I particularly loved the picture on your blog where you broke down all the pieces you used and often refer back to it. I've started undercoating the scavvies this afternoon and will try and post some painted pictures soon.

I loved Shockwaves gang, especially the capes and wish I was better with greenstuff.

Regarding Scallies, I was thinking something like this:

He's only held together with blu-tac at the moment so can easily be changed. Looking at the rules, it seems Scallies might be better tooled up for CC rather than shooting hence the lack of a spear gun at the moment. Here are some other parts I could use instead - an alternative head and a very old (and badly painted) tophy rack from Warlord Queek.

Once again, this is insired/stolen from another dakkadakka blog but which one escapes me at the moment. I'm not decided yet though as I may want something bigger. Perhaps the plastic nurgle lord would be an option. I do like Shockwaves use of the forgeworld chaos ogryn though. I have always wanted some of them but have never had money for a full squad.

Good luck with your gang, they are off to a good start. With regards to the scaly I think it might be worth changing the chainaxe and maybe the hands as they look very Orky. Orks always have the gorilla stoop and oversized hands and I think even with the headswap it is still recognisable as an Ork.

Personally I love Demi_Morgana's idea of using Mordor cave trolls as scallies. I'm curious as to what could be done by making a tech'd up Kroxigor as well.

@ Doombiscuit, I really like what you've done with the Zombie Guard idea, especially the fact that this entire army is based around a Necromundan Special Character. If you need any ideas for new Mutant variations, just check out my Gallery, I've posted the entire Mutant Building Workshop from one of the 13th black crusade global campaign WDs. Some pretty simple yet effective conversions there.

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

@dsteingass - thanks mate!

@Brotheralexos -thank you for posting those White Dwarf scans. That must be one of my favourite issues of WD ever. I remember reading that when I was in either 6th form or 1st year of uni and being incredibly excited by the mutant pack GW released. As I remember, that was the first time I really saw kitbashing promoted by GW. Unfortunately, I didn't have the money to purchase an army of Lost and Damned at the time and I guess I'm making up for that now!

@Bruticus - I think it may be back to the drawing board on the scavvy - it does look too orky. I love your Spartikus blog btw. I am currently teaching the Spartacus uprising at school and everytime I mention it your pitslaves come to mind.

Here are the fruits of some painting I managed to complete earlier this week. First up is Karloth and his pets. Painting is the area of the hobby I feel least confident on so it was with some trepidation that I approached such an iconic special character. The hounds, which will act as scavvy dogs or IG bodyguards are very old figures (I think from the old Marauder Miniatures line). I was lucky enough to pick these up on ebay for 99p each having wanted them for years.

Next up is some of Karloth's gentleman followers:

Over the next week or two I will be returning to the scavvies. After that I only have a zillion or so zombies to paint until I have a fully functioning 40k army!

Thanks for looking!

Hi all,

Last weeked I got round to painting a test skin for my scavvies. This guy is still very much a WIP:

I used khremi brown as a base followed by a light flesh, green and brown washes and then more of the light flesh. Unfortunately I had bit of a paint shortage so had to stop short of painting the weapons and clothing. I have since made a trip to Darksphere down by Waterloo station and bought a metalic copper colour for the weapons and a random selection of paints to attempt to paint drab clothes with. As I've said before, painting is the part of the hobby I find hardest (and most draining) so any comments would be appreciated.

Sorry for the crappy picture quality - I have only my iPhone camera at the moment.

Thanks for looking!
