Hi Everyone,

I've been working on this project for a bit and thought it might be worth putting it out on the forums to get some feedback and advice.

Background

I've been collecting Genestealers since the late 90s since picking up the 2nd edition of Space Hulk for a fiver - mainly just for the Terminators.
Unfortunately the genestealers didn't get much love and were just given a bad paint job and shoved in the box until the release of the Citadel Journal Genestealer codex in 2001 when I added a Magus, Patriarch and some very badly converted hybrids. Not much effort was put into this incarnation of the Cult and it played just as Imperial Guard with a few genestealer units dotted in. This force would pop out every now and again for a couple of games before being packed away.
About a year ago, I decided to put a some more effort into the cult as my painting had improved and wanted to venture out into using greenstuff and plasticard.

Whilst I wouldn't say I'm a brilliant painter, I'm not the worst so I'm open to critisicm and feedback as to how to improve.

Direction

This force is predominantly to be used for painting rather than playing so I'm not going to adhere strictly to force organisation charts though the previous army lists (Rogue Trader, 2nd Edition and Citadel Journal) will be used for things like unit size and options.

The 'background' for the army is more of a rebel uprising influenced by genestealers with the cult leading over it, so whilst the cult will have a strong presence, I won't be having things like purple vehicles - this is also so it can use some of my Imperial Guard as the more militaristic aspects of the force.

Also, the 2nd edition codex (and Space Hulk rules) allowed for usage of things such as Tarantulas, Rapiers and Conversion Beamers. Whilst there are arguments that a 'rebel uprising' wouldn't be able to get their hands on rare weaponry like this, I was going to use the argument that they were discovered aboard an infested Space Hulk and brought to the planet or that once the cult managed to get a foothold on the planet they managed to gain access to the special armoury of weapons too precious or specialist to be used as dictated by the Imperial military.

Anyway, enough about the army, time for some pictures:

The Patriarch

The Magus

Hybrid Neophytes

Brood Brother Initiates

Hope you like the stuff I've done, I've got more to come if you guys are interested.

I'm currently in the process of making an Imperial Guard landspeeder as 2nd edition Genestealer cults could have them (but not 2nd edition Imperial Guard...)

For more pictures of the current models as well as information on how I did some of the conversions, please check out my blog : http://cultoftheskyfather.blogspot.com/

Field Marshal Wiley wrote:...throw in a couple imperial guard deserters...

The Brood Brothers I've posted are meant to be the 'militia' that have risen up and represent the weaker armed and armoured fighters. The Imperial Guard 'deserters' will be fielded as actual squads (with Sergeants but lacking any higher up command) to represent corrupted / turned military / PDF squads.

However, a mixed unit of guard deserters isn't too bad an idea...

Ok so here's my first W.I.P. - the Imperial Guard (Cult) Land Speeder.

As the vehicle would have belonged to the military, it is going to look more Imperial than Cult though I also wanted to make it look more Imperial Guard than Space Marine.

The basis is the current Space Marine land speeder with some tank accessories added to try and make it less Space Marine but still keeping its original shape. I'm also using the 2nd edition rules for the armoury of it (to again differentiate it from the Space Marine one).

So to begin with are the finished crew which are basically Sentinel crew with different heads and the heavy weapon arms (that came in the Basilisk kit).

The Gunner

The Driver

The Weapons

The Plasma Cannon with be mounted on the underside and is made from an old vehicle Heavy Plasma Gun that I got with some Hybrids (don't know where it came from originally though) added to the bracket from a Searchlight.

The Multilaser is a Sentinel multilaser that has been cut down a little and the ammo box from a Heavy Bolter added to the side.

and here's a final W.I.P. shot of the rest of the land speeder:

Changes include adding some extra ariels, adding baggage and a Sentinel sheild adding to the front.

Hopefully I should have it finished reasonably soon.

Ok so progress hasn't been very rapid on my land speeder (I got distracted by video games among other things).

However, I went home a few weeks ago and managed to find time to paint a couple of hybrids:

Hybrid Acolyte Leader

I'm starting to venture more into edge hilighting, hopefully the effect on the power sword came across ok.

Magus

This is the Magus that came with the Throned Patriarch which I also have. Unfortunately I don't have its throne - does anyone have any good suggestions for replacements?

And finally, here's some progress shots from the land speeder. Its chassis is constructed and the figure is undercoated, I should get onto the main paint job very soon.

Not sure how visible it is in this last picture but the underside needed a partial re-construction using some tank bits and plasticard.

Hopefully my next update won't be as far apart as this one.

So I've just finished my (Liberated) Imperial Guard Landspeeder (the Brood Brothers found it locked up in the Imperial Guard Armoury when they broke in).

Overall it was a pretty standard and simple conversion with most of the work being constructing the cockpit and making it look less like I'd just put Sentinel Crew inside a Marine landspeeder.

Changes to the Marine landspeeder are:

- New Crew (make from Sentinel Torsos, Tank Crew Heads and Heavy Weapon Team or Sentinel Crew arms).
- Mounted Multilaser (made from a Sentinel Multilaser and Heavy Bolter Ammo box).
- Undermounted Plasma Cannon (made from an old Heavy Plasma Gun and Searchlight - I assume the Heavy Plasma Gun was from an old Dreadnaught but I can't be certain).
- Modifying the shape to look less sleak and streamlined (adding bits from Cadian, Tank Crew and other misc sprues and taking off some parts such as the rear fin).
- Reconstructing part of the underside (caused by having to remove some of the glue the previous owner covered the model in).

Anyway, enough chatter, here's the pictures, hope you like it.

I'm toying with the idea of adding a searchlight to the back, left side of the speeder as the entire right side seems a little bare in comparison to the right.

Also, for my next cult project, I'm unsure whether to paint up some more hybrids (plastic or metal) or to work on some cult bikers (including hybrid in sidecar).

Anyways, what do you guys think?

Wow... Thats some excellent work. Good to see some old stuff looking good...

How long did it take you all together?

I would like to see the cult bikers next... Would be very interesting (espec hybrid in side car).

Keep up the good work and keep us updated with new pics.

Thanks!

The speeder didn't take too much time to do. Soaked it overnight in Dettol, about a day or so to assemble and paint the cockpit, another day fully assembling everything and waiting for the greenstuff to dry then another day to paint and highlight the rest. It was a pretty simple paint job just took time cos there was so much to paint.

The cult bikers will be made alongside my Cadian Roughriders (Cadians on Bikes). I'm using Space Marine Scout bikes for the bikes, though as I've just bought the frames (no handle bars, wheels etc) I'll be spending quite a bit of time planning them out and scratch building the other bits. I also need to get round to getting some more Catachans to convert the crew, the jackets and bare arms I think will make a good 'biker' look.

For the hybrid sidecar I'm either going to use a converted attack bike sidecar or modify an old Imperial Cuard sentinel's cockpit (the 2nd edition Cadian one). Not sure how I should make the Hybrid occupant - cut up a metal one, use a plastic one or scratch build it. The plastic one would be easier but is the wrong generation of hybrid....

Sorry for the delays in posting, I've been kept busy with some Imperials.

I've started work on my Hybrid sidecar by starting the Hybrid passenger and thought I'd post the (very) WIP shots of what I've done so far and where I plan to go with it.

Instead of butchering an existing Hybrid, I've decided to build my own using plastics, greensfuff and milliput (I've rarely used these for proper sculpting so it'll be a learning exercise).

I've only made a very basic start on the Hybrid's torso (the greenstuff is drying as we speak) but here it is:

(I've cleaned the back up a little since that picture).

As you can see I've made a start on the ribbing that exists on all of the metal hybrids buy filing down the torso and building it up with greenstuff.

The armour plates will be made using milliput with more flexible / organic bits being made from greenstuff. Arms will be a mixture of Catachan and hybrid.

I'm working on a Guard Heavy Weapon squad at the moment but hopefully I'll be able to fit time in between to work on this project.

Any feedback (including sculpting tips) would be much appreciated.

I've managed a little more work on the Hybrid, its coming along though I don't think it will be up to an amazing standard (fingers crossed it'll at least be good enough to put on the table, I'll have to paint it well).

Firstly, here's the model I'm using as a reference.

Here's some shots of the head, using greenstuff to make it look more like a Genestealer (making it more bulbus and a ridge to the nose).

And here's the torso. Its looking a little messy at the moment, hopefully I'll be able to clean it up a bit when its finished.

I'm quite impressed with it for a first attempt.

Comments and critisicm would be much appreciated (and some hints on sculpting wouldn't be bad either ).

So rather than being a bit on the side, this Hybrid has become my main project.

I think the majority of the sculpting work has been completed, though there'll be touch up and extra details to add. Most of the cleanup work will be done once undercoated black as I'll be able to tell where the work needs to be done easier.

The arms will be a mix of Catachan and the plastic single Hybrid arm - it'll only be a two armed Hybrid.

So here's the shots of the Hybrid as it is now.

The backpack needs touching up, as does the sides - though hopefully the arms will cover up the messier bits.

Some really good stuff here. You might also want to look at MajorTom's stuff in the dakka gallery.

I'm working on a Genestealer Cult codex, if you're interested, I'd really value your input.

Always love Genestealer Cult. I've thought about reviving mine, and I picked up a Brood Lord to replace the older Patriarch model that I never liked. I figure with a little conversion to make him a bit more hunched and threatening, it will make a great Patriarch. As it is, the Brood Lord's stance is way, way too "Come at me Bro" in the "Punch Me" stance. Great work on the models. Your BBs have a lot of character.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Personally I think the Space Hulk Broodlord is one of the best looking Genestealer models (along with some others in Space Hulk). I did look into getting one of the regular Tyranid Broodlords but was outbid on eBay and also, why would I need 4 'Patriarch' models (as I already own the old running one, the old throned one and the space hulk one).

I just picked up one of the 54mm Genestealers and have done him up as a Patriarch.

Thanks to you both for the comments on the Codex, I'll look at some edits after playtesting the Invasion force list tomorrow.

Well, I finally got round to painting and finishing my Hybrid (would've got them done a little quicker but I had to put my paints away and pick up Christmas tree).

Torso Shots:

With Weapons:

The bolt pistol is from an old 2nd edition Ork and the sword is from the Catachan sprue with some wire and greenstuff work on it.

I decided to go for two different arms to make him look a little less 'perfect' and more of a freak.

Still not sure how I'll make the sidecar, the old Sentinel has the right look to it but it might be a little too big.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with my first major foray into sculpting.

This is an excellent blog and I'm subscribed. I miss my Genestealer Cult a lot. I still own it, but apparently there are no more Genestealer Cults (or Chaos Cults for that matter) in the Grimdark anymore.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work! Really enjoy seeing the RT stuff!

Good stuff a new take on a classic idea the key is not to let it get too bitty if it does it ends up looking a bit silly.

Other than that its rather awesome kudos to you sir!
