Unbalanced Fanatic

Read through the new White Dwarf today,
After looking at the overall fluff and backstory for the necrons as it has been revised, I have now very mixed feelings about the new models and the overall changes to the tone and fluff of the background. Overall, the models add enough interest and variety to the army that will make it much more fun to play. I like the way that the army doesn't play like an MEQ anymore and has access to more mobility and weapons variety than it once had. The transports and new HQs all seem to be well designed, but the palace guard elites are a bit bland. I'm curious to see what other creatures (Tomb Spyders?) look like that are included in the Codex. I also feel that the expanded Egyptian/Pharoh/Cylons background they've described is passable but not all that strong. The worst was the awful fiction and characterization that was included in the sidebars of this month's White Dwarf. The Necron characters talk like Decepticons and pulled all kinds of D&D crap like appearing out of the mist to mess with Sycarius. They need to put a lid on that crap asap.
From a competitive standpoint, it is hard to tell how the army will work since I don't know all the different points values and special rules, but it seems like it should be a good antidote to some of the more extreme Mech forces that are out there, but I'm not sue if it will be enough to push for a more balanced approach with Marine armies in particular.
Overall, I think the vehicles and rules changes seem to make this a more fun army to play and collect but it still lacks character overall, and the background changes make the Necrons seem a bit silly.
I'm curious to hear what others think

The only things I dont is the C'tan changes and the "ohh lets trade and make alliances" garbage. The inferior younger races have nothing to offer the Necrons. I dont see how this makes sense. And dont even get me started on the C'tan...

So impeccable are the logical patterns behind the Stormlord's strategies that the only way a foe can truly gain meaningful advantage is to abandon all logic themselves - something that most races find incredibly hard to do (except the Orks, who remain a constant thorn in the Stormlord's side)
I HATE the new flayed ones. They look a lot like vamp count ghouls though, especially the one with the corpse on his back.
I like the Cryptek model, and the lichguard with shields, but thats about it.
Meh.

Very disappointed with the aesthetic of the new releases. I was hoping they'd try to keep away from the whole 'tomb kings IN SPACE' thing they used to have going on in a really bad way... but they turned it up to 11.

I'm a huge fan of the new stuff, but then I wasn't a fan at all of the old models and fluff. Both were incredibly dull.
I realize fans of the old Necrons are probably going to disagree, but hey, it's not like rewriting fluff is a new thing for GW. Ask Tyranid players who have been around since Epic Hive War/40k second edition.

I hope they still suck so you are not tempted to purchase and play them.
It seems that the necrons will be taking a step back, which is hardly surprising.

I liked almost everything so far, except the Flayed ones. Assault specialists that will be striking after guardsmen and fire warriors with no power weapon choice? That's really bogus.
Yeah, they put out as many attacks as a khorne berserker, but they better be amazingly cheap so you can still have a menacing number after the enemy hits you first. Which it pretty much always will.

Im not really into the new fluff. Trading and making alliances with other races? And they act like Tomb kings? And their weapons names sound really stupid (doomsday weapon my ). I think they were smoking crack when making the new codex.
For the models everything else expect the flayed ones look fine. The Flayed ones are terrible and look stupid. The old models were more disturbing, scary and stealthy looking.
I do like the new HQ characters and especially their new transport.
Overall good release, but could have been made better. I still won't digest the damn fluff.

anyway, I actually like the new fluff changes. It changes a very bland army into something with a little character.
I do agree that the Flayed Ones look silly. My necron friend is going to be collecting old Flayed Ones for his army because of this.

i like what they did with most of the models but i think some of the models and rules are silly like:
the necron lord has only 1 wound? at least have two for combat patrol
the flayed ones i dont need to say anything
the Necron Lychguard and Triarch Praetorians quite disapointed on the I2
but overall the rules are much better than the other codex by far

I love some of the new models especially the Lychguard with blade/shield combo. Jump infantry is very nice addition also as are the Deathmarks. I hope the Cryptek or some/all of the HQ choices buff the army some as the I2 is going to be a killer again to necrons and the expensive elite units. At this early stage I can see people going, " Those Lychguard/Praetorians look nice but I2 makes their CC prowess worthless....I'll stick to the big heavy stuff sitting at the back in a gunline popping stuff from afar."
Or maybe going back to good old warrior spam maybe.
The new Barges look nice but I'm really not sure about the Arks as yet. The Ultramarines logo shaped hulls really annoy me.
I can't wait to get my hands on the codex to put all the ifs, buts and maybes together and get the badass robots back on the battlefield!

Necrons have about 3 real fans and a million posers who have "dynamic" and "in-depth" opinions and longwinded reasoning for why really boring robots with really boring tactics and a really boring backstory weren't really boring.

That's cause the necron lord isn't a HQ. It's more like a Court of the Archon thing.
You get an Overlord (who has 3W), and then you can take up to 5 necron lords, who may either be used as a retinue, or can lead squads. The fun part though is that they don't count as IC, so they can't be singled out in CC.

Yep. But they provide more of a support role. They can have wargear that buffs the squad, or have some nifty weapons that can bust vehicles or long range.

2) Do you have any spare socks?
3) How hard can you swing said sock if it contained the aforementioned dreadnought?
Most common answers:
1) Very
2) Yes
3) Very
