Greetings fellow dakkanauts!
I have a proposition for swimming rules in the grim dark future. It is like difficult terrain except this:

When crossing water obstacles roll 2d6 and pick the highest. subtract from that roll (7 - Sv) [example: ork subtracts 1 from move and Terminator subtracts 5 from move distance]
The subtraction represents the hinderance of having armour in the water.

What do you guys think? Any additions?

On a boat, Trying not to die.

Problem: A Space Marine would sink, and walk. Same with a Terminator.

Though they would still be slower right?

HIDING IN METAL BAWKSES!

They would be slower. Walking in water would be more difficult.

Or only dangerous if you move ended in the water, but not while passing through it.

In regards to your idea OP; I like it. It seems pretty straightforward, although an Imperial Guardsmen making his way through water better than a Space Marine is odd.

Take a pencil, now push it through some water. Easy? Now take a 2x2 and push it through the water. Harder right? So on this investigation I have concluded that the spacemarine(2x2) is not very hydrodynamic Vs. The Pencil(Guardsmen).
Though the power armour may have dextirity modifiers, it can't help but be slowed down by the water.

They also can breath underwater...

Yes, but they are still slowed nonetheless

I like this idea. I mean, its not like you are going to be taking your Gretchin swimming every day, but when it does arise, it seems fun. And it somehow, in my mind at least, fits in with the Amphibous Chimera. they can cross water, why not a Grot?

Wouldn't swimming be represented by the 'moving through difficult terrain' rule? I think it works fine for the zany abstraction of an alternate reality that is the 40k universe and tabletop game.

Depends on what you and your opponent agree on beforehand.

Sometimes it's impassible, sometimes difficult, sometimes dangerous.
But for a Chimera, it's always 100% awesome!

Only a select few have them.

Draigo, Autarchs, Telion, maybe some DE things( I am just going off the back of the BRB) have BS 6. That's 2+ with a 6+.

Pheonix Lords have bs 7, a 2+/5+.

GK assassins have BS 8, which applies a hell of a lot to Culexus, and more importantly Vindicares becausde that is a 2+/4+. not so much for Callidus with the Template, and almost useless for Eversors with their pitol.
