Hi guys,
Finished my conversion of Mephiston today.
To be honest. I'm pretty proud of the outcome since it was an assload of work.
; )

Hope you like him too.
Tell me what you think.

I hope that I can paint him as soon as possible.

Nice!

Did you spray prime that or base coat it?

Looks pretty nice, although not easy to see all the detail because its a bit shiny....

Also, could just be the photo but your primer looks a bit thick, which won't help the final outcome :( But it might just be the photo....

It's some spray primer from Army Painter. Took these pictures immidiately after i sprayed him. That's why he is a bit glossy. ^^

Looks good, as far as I can tell. The gloss is a bit distracting, admittedly, but pics once dry or after basecoating will clear that up.

I am noticing a bit of roughness on the back of the sword blade, near the hilt, though. Is that intentional damage? If not, I might consider going back with filler and files/sandpaper to smooth that out before painting. Figure if you've put that much work into converting the fig, you might as well give him a proper surface to paint on.

Good luck getting paint to stick to your thick primer coat....post better pictures when the shine has gone down.

Come on guys. The primer was sprayed on a minute before I took the picture. Don't you think I'm able to use a primer?

Based on the pictures you posted, no I dont think you know how to use primer. Primer is meant to provide a "tooth" for paint to bite into, by design primer is meant to be applied in thin, almost tranparent coats. By doing this you will obscure the least detail and provide the ebst chance for paint to adhere. By appying primer so that the prime is smooth, and perhaps even has a sheen will prevent the paints from laying flat and may even cause pooling and seperation of the paint when you go to apply it....ever wonder why your red paint goes like sh*t over your black primer? It is because the paint is sitting ontop of the primer, and not binding with it look it should. So like I said, and it was meant in honesty not jest....good luck getting paint to stick to your thick coat of primer.

Well. If I'm able to achieve a paintjob which appeals to me using my primer the wrong way it's still fine for me. I do not meet any problems applying my paints and haven't had any cases of paint chipping. At least speaking for my plastic models.

If my paintjobs do not appeal to you, and if you don't like the way I'm working that's also fine for me. You know. This hobby is about having fun and sharing what you have achieved. Posting some pictures in such an anonymous place such as this forum one has to be ready to take some critique.
I do.

Thanks for your comment and your insights about using the primer right. I will still do it my way because it works for me, but maybe you just helped another guy reading this thread. Because that's what it's all about.

I still am not a fan of the very rope like hair, but I'm hoping painting will make it work. The cloak is immediately what I noticed and love, well done.

Looking forward to PiP or showcase pics.

I would like to say that the things Redfinger mentioned are valid points, and probably not meant as an attack. If you look at his comment history he's very positive and helpful. YMMV.

I know. The hair started a big hate it/ love it discussion. ^^
I really thought a while about it. The best statement was to fill the gaps with some liquid green stuff, but since I'm not able to get any in the next two weeks I decided to go for it without gap-filling.

And since the aesthetic of Warhammer is very cartoony and not so realistic it fits for me.
That is what I wanted to achieve concerning the hair:

I guess the shading and highlighting of the paintjob will add a whole different value to the "rope hairs".

And if you take a look at the Vlad Carstein model:

That's pretty close to what I was doing.

I hope that I'm able to convince you once it is painted. ^^
For now I'm happy about all your feedback. It's allways highly appreciated.

On a sidenote:

This is how I am applying my primer following the official army painters tutorial. I even apply less paint. Who has ever tried out their stuff will see that it looks like an aweful lot of paint once you applied it. But it dries and leaves nothing but a smooth thin surface.
I'm not mad about Redfinger. He put some effort into writing a detailed description about how he is using his primer, and I appreciate it. I just wanted to point out that I do not have any problems and achieve good results doing it my way.

You know, there are nicer ways of saying things. No need to come into this guy's thread and be a total jerk. You didn't have one constructive thing to add to this thread whatsoever.

OP, that is by far the best Mephiston conversion I have seen. And I LOVE the cloak!! Can't wait to see it painted.

Edit: ok I looked at the painted pics. Really nice!! The eyes look a little googly though, but that's not a big deal.

Would you mind sharing how you did the cloak?

Hold the phone.....

Re-read my post again, and you will find that I gave him very sepcific advice on how to prime, which he in tunr THANKED me for giving. I did in no way critisize him as a person, he posted his work for feedback and I gave it, simple as that....if anyone here is trying to make a personal attack it would be you, as you have inclined that I in some offended or attacked the OP personally. So please do not acuse me of doing something that was clearly not done.

The OP already finsihed paiting the conversion and his thread is in the Showcase section.

Come on guys. Everything's fine.
Redfingers accusation that I'm not able to use a primer was a bit harsh, but I have no hard feelings towards him. Should have waited for the primer to cure before taking the pictures, because as allways it dried smoothly and did not obscure any detail whatsoever.

Thank you for your comment nectarprime.
The cloak derives from this model here:

It's Judas Bloodspire from the Reaper model range. Needed a good amount of green stuff to make it fit though. In case you are interested. I used his lower body as well. Just sculpted him some space marine legs.

It's all down to tone.

Redfinger's intent for his message may have been reasonable, but his tone was overly terse (after the initial message, which was reasonable), and this being the internet, many people have an "I'm always right - I never apologise" attitude.

And people also have the "I dont know how to read all the posts in a thread" attitude, the Op has asked to drop it about the comments I made, and even thanked me for my input.
