If you could only have one box, would you build Immortals or Deathmarks?

Without knowing anything else in the army, or who/what you are facing, which would you build? This is a vacuum question.

Deathmarks
-Models look AMAZING
-Can snipe MC's, turn up behind an enemy, etc

Immortals
-Objective holders extraordinaire
-Pretty good firepower

As a follow-up question - if you take the Immortals, do you go Gauss Blasters or Tesla Carbines? Again, assuming you have no knowledge of anything else. One has rapid fire, the other has potential to get extra shots no matter the distance, but requires 6's to do so.

For me, it all depends on if it looks cool.
Really the only reason one would use Swooping Hawks after all.

Immortals with gauss, as I can't justify using the points for the deathmarks, but the immortals are tough and are troops. Gauss weapons preferred just because of the likelyhood of facing MEQ and getting a constant damage output. ( plus with a phaeron lord they are relentless).

If I could ONLY choose one box, I guess (besides for kicking a chair, etc) I would make a box of Necron Immortals with Tesla cannons... I've always liked immortals and those Tesla cannons look so cool.

Thanks for the replies. I guess it does make a little sense to consider having Troops in place already, but these were informative answers, nonetheless.

Okay, now let's assume you have Warriors already. Any changes in the decision?

Tesla carbines, not cannons. If Immortals could take tesla cannons as their stock weapon there'd be no question it'd be a better choice. (S6 Assault 2 - tesla cannon vs S5 Assault 1 - tesla carbine vs s5 ap4 rapid fire - gauss blaster)

@OP - I would take Immortals, with tesla carbines. They are resilient, and can fire on the go without a phaeron upgraded Overlord.

I did say carbines in my original post...but thanks anyway. I like Rapid Fire, but that requires either Relentless and/or Deep Strike shenanigans. I feel as though the Deathmarks with a Cryptek + Veil are better suited for that task.

I think I will build them as Immortals then. Though the professional painter in me REALLY wants to do up some Deathmarks for my new army.

Deathmarks are situationally awesome, but generally risky.

They make a great heatsink, coming in when they're needed most to interfere with enemy plans, they force you to deal with them by painting a bullseye on your opponent's most important unit. Backed up by a cryptek, they can be vicious, backed up by a rezlord they're a pain in the ass.

For 95-190 points they're not terrible at all; but their ability is easily mimicked by the Nemesor, and their job is easily filled by anyone with a teleport cloak.

They do look really cool, huh?

They look amazing. I keep looking at them, and pondering some of the schemes on the palette I've been tinkering with lately, and I'm desperately tempted. I know that I won't be adding to this army any time soon, however, so I'm in a bit of a pickle.

Immortals with tesla. Then put the Deathmark parts on some warriors...

Because warriors already get gauss, versus av11+ gauss is identical between warriors destroyers and immortals. Versus infantry, in cover ap doesnt help much so again warrior gauss, by virtue of being cheaper, is better versus t3. At higher toughness, the str gets nice, but still, 26 shots versus 20 when points balanced only becomes good at t5+

That said, tesla weapons let you assault after shooting, bringing damage closer to rapid fire weapons from warriors, so long as your target isnt a cc monster.

End result? Take warriors if you want gauss and immortals for tesla, with perhaps a 2 to 1 ratio.

Tesla Weapons are more effective against MEQ infantry.

Sigvatr, I would qualify your statement a bit. Tesla are not more effective than gauss blasters in the 6.1 to 12 inch range, IF your goal is total wounds. Within 6, it can be debated that the ability to charge when shooting tesla weapons balances out the additional damage that rapid fire gauss does. Only is tesla superior when both moving and firing at a target 12.1 inches away.

Dudes, save some duckets and do this.

step 1: buy warriors box
step 2: buy death marks
step 3: build death marks
step 4: build 5 immortals with tesla and 5 with blasters. Just put the guns on the warriors and hunch them over a bit so they look all huliking.

Do this twice and you have ten death marks, and 20 immortals. Plus you will have left over warriors.

My way you spend $132
or you could buy 2 boxes of death marks, and four boxes of immortals for the same result and spend 198

If you have extra warriors then you save even more money.

That's a brilliant idea! However, the box only comes with 5 tubing back (if you understand me) for the immortals so the second 5 won't look right. You could cut the tubing off although i think that would ruin their look in a way. Any ideas how to get round this?

Hmmm, I thought I sent that edit...too bad, I'll be more careful in the future.

Anyway, I still think that Tesla weapons are superior to Gauss weapons against MEQ infantry mainly for the reasons you already stated - the longer you can keep an enemy away from your Necrons, the better you'll end up because no matter what happens, once in melee, you either cheat at rolling or get swept from the table in the very first round of CC. Tesla allows you to move away from the enemy and still shoot thus you are likely to get 1-2 more rounds of shooting which equals to more hits. Furthermore, you can still roll lucky and get quite a bunch of additional hits, especially when you have a Walker backing your Immortals up, zapping spies marines everywhere.

Gauss Weapons are superior at <= 12'', but then again, you only have one round of shooting before the enemy destroys your unit.

I just cut off the tubes really. They have a good clipping point at the base of the gun. I'm sure you can rig somehting up with wires or green stuff, which i may do. But, otherwise, they don't look that bad without the wires.

Actually, I think I will use a single thin gause wire and attack it to the gun and base of the necron back. When I do it I'll post up a quick conversion with pics.

I guess when I see people do stuff like this, and then I view them being played on the table top, it looks terrible. Truly terrible. I think I'd rather spend a little extra for the bulkier, better looking models offered us by GW than do that.

While some people would play with paper cutouts if they could, just for the sake of playing without spending money, I am all aboard the aesthetic part of the hobby as well.
