Part 2

https://www.frontlinegaming.org/2011/11/14/video-battle-report-new-necrons-vs-blood-angels-part-2-of-2/

Here we have another battle with the new Crons against a tournament Blood Angels build.

Again, the Crons are proxied, but we wanted to get the feel of the book before we started building anything. We are working on our studio army now, so we will very shortly have Necron models in the battle reports.

This game does a great job of showing how the new Crons can hold up against a tried and true tournament list.

C&C welcome guys. Let us know what other units and match-ups you'd like to see. We have pretty much every army here in our studio.

Thanks for watching.

The overall quality of this battle report seemed much better. It's very crisp and clear.

Badluck on the Warrior squad getting Swept! Do you think a lord with a Scythe would have made enough difference?

Looking forward the rest of this report, looking kind of grim for the Necrons though.

Yeah, we were pretty shocked to see Imotekh and 20 warriors get swept by 4 Blood Angels! That was crappy, but it is a reality of the army. You have to stay our of assault.

We are going to try a lord with Scythe, as that really helps even the odds of combat resolution. Mind shackle scarabs can really help too, to stop a fist or such from swinging.

There are a ton of combos in here to find, it is going to take a lot of playtesting!

Oh, and thanks, we've been working on the technical aspects of everything and we're glad it's improving.

In terms of the Imotekh nightfight army, I think a 5-man unit of Wraiths need to hang in the backfield and counterattack when units come out to assault the scarabs. Imo the wraiths fit well in this scarab/spider/nightfight army.

Also when are the necron reserves coming in?

Yeah, we are coming around on Wraiths. Frankie was really against them due to their susceptibility to ID from strength 8. But, Imotekh's night fight is such a game changer.

We're pumped to try the tomb blades out. 5 str 6, ap 5 templates on the move is brutal.

The warriors were reserved to play grots and jump on objectives late game.

I think the 20 man Warrior unit is a dangerous waste to be honest. They are entirely too easy to kill in hand to hand and just about anything can win combat against them without much trouble. Immortals survive much better with the 3+ armor save but of course they cannot be brought back with the Ghost Arks.

I wonder if an Immortal squad with Imotek, a 10-15 man squad with a second Phaeron /w Res Orb and a Veil of Darkness Cryptek, and a pair of 9 man Warrior squads with Eldritch Lance Crypteks in Ghost Arks wouldn't be a better choice, dropping the Walker for extra points. You should still have enough to fit everything though you might have to drop a Spyder or two. The difference is that the Immortals make for a more resilient core and the larger squad of Warriors can teleport around the board where they are needed. With the 4+ Reanimation Protocols they should be a lot more survivable against range, and they should be able to avoid combat if you are careful.

I think Mindshackle Scarabs can really turn a combat around, I keep forgetting about them! Will have to tinker with them.

Question, Were the scarabs not able to get any Pens after the Armor reduction on those Preds? seems like they would have been able to get in a few, with the armor lowered so much.

I believe they posted somewhere that this was the last game they played still thinking that Entropic Strike occurred instead of rolling damage (or after rolling damage, but either way, not how it should be).

That change alone would have had a pretty huge impact on the game as all 3 of those vehicles, especially the two Baal Predators which backed up and kept firing after that would almost certainly have been toast.

And as for Warrior squads, I am totally of the mind that ever taking more than 10 is a recipe for disaster as you're sinking too many points into a unit that can easily be wiped out from a sweeping advance by just about anything besides Tau, Grots & standard guardsman units...its just not worth it!

Also, it was obviously midly unlikely that the Stormlord's night fighting ended on turn 2, but it does have a 1/3 chance to do that, so I guess you live by the sword and die by the sword as well!

Ya I realized the scarabs still got to attack after there entropic strike the day after haha. That change alone would have made a huge difference that game, o well. But Ya I found the large unit of warriors to be a waste of points. I just wanted to try out different lists. I think a unit of wraiths would be a great addition, reece and frankie would disagree. But I think they are a great counter unit.

Yeah I'm with you on the Warriors Yak. They re incredibly easy to wipe and if taken in large numbers it only increases your chances of a big loss. Better to take 2x squads of 10 rather than 1x squad of 20 and split them up so your opponent cant get a 2fer.

I devised a list that's basically a gestalt of this one and one that a friend of mine ran at the game store last Wednesday. Gonna refine it a bit and I'll post it for commentary in the lists section and link it.

I love the idea of watching battle reports

Good presentation overall.

However... I cannot stand entirely proxied armies :( You should include battlereport write ups as well, I know I can't be alone in just wanting to know how the battle unfolded without having to watch proxywars

I agree. I went to a comp 2 weeks ago. This guy had ordinary marine segeants. I charged them, and it turned out they were terminators. That sucked for my bikers.

Lol about the warriors getting swept. Reminds me of a game I had against Reece. His 15+ guardians charge my lone, remaining grey knight interceptor (with no force weapon, just a psycannon). I then proceed to win combat by 1 and sweep that guardian unit. Ah, the funny memories.

Great battle so far. Looking forwards to the rest. It seems like the 9 spyder formation is pretty nasty. That's the great equalizer versus MSU-mech.

Why would they Disagree? It seems to me that Wraiths can handle just about anything you can throw at them. They can shred Vehicles and most infantry, fairly easy. I hope you try them out!

Looking forward to the end of this battle report, and some more from you guys!

Hmmm, never thought about the scarabs reducing my armor after they hit but before AP rolls. Will is right, I would have been toast! those Preds in the late game were vital to my win (i guess win should be in quotes, lol).

Agreed on the large warrior squads. It was way to easy to rid of them. One problem I have with the new Crons is their lack of range. They have to get to midfield to be efficient, and by then they are too close for a charge. Which means a counter charge unit, such as wraiths or c'tan, is vital to a competitive army.

One way I have seen the large Warrior units survive is to include 2x Harbingers of Transmogrification with Tremorstaves and Seismic Crucibles. Any unit that gets close enough to charge them will be moving through Difficult Terrain and have their charge distance reduced by 2d3", making it very difficult to actually assault them. This also works quite well for Immortals, especially since they often include a Phaeron of some sort so they can move and fire 24", making them a tough unit to pin down and one that can avoid combat with some of the nastier units.

Assuming the FAQ doesn't get rid of the ability to add one member from each Court to a single unit, this could well be the primary strategy for fielding units on foot. Imagine two units of 20 Warriors with Relentless and 4+ Reanimation protocols followed along by Ghost Arks that replenish them, capable of reducing charge ranged by d3, forcing enemies to move through difficult terrain, and teleporting across the battlefield if things get hairy. They would cost about 615 points a piece including Warscythes to ensure they don't die horribly if assaulted, but I can think of worse ways to spend 615 points......

I like Wraiths, personally. Frankie thinks they are not a top pick because they are susceptible to ID from str 8, which is everywhere right now.

I think they will be a great addition to the 9 Spider/Scarab/Imotekh list.

We are working on our Cron studio army now, fellas. I know Proxies, suck! We don't like it either, but we wanted to figure out what worked before committing to anything.

Here's an update on the studio army:
https://www.frontlinegaming.org/2011/11/12/we%E2%80%99ll-be-back-reviving-an-old-necron-army-part-1/

@jy2
Yeah, that sucked! Haha, stupid grey knight!

@Aldarionn
That is a great idea with the dual tremor staves, actually. That means they have great odds of fully avoiding a charge, nice one!

Yeah one of the lists I have been mulling over had this as a base:

Overlord (Warscythe, Res Orb, Phaeron) - 150
Royal Court - 130
-HoTransmog (Crucible)
-HoDestruction (Solar Pulse)
-HoDestruction
Overlord (Warscythe, Barge w/ Gauss) - 180
Royal Court - 130
-HoTransmog (Crucible)
-HoDestruction (Solar Pulse)
-HoDestruction
15 Warriors (Ghost Ark) - 310
8 Wariors (Ghost Ark) - 219
8 Wariors (Ghost Ark) - 219
10 Scarabs - 150
10 Scarabs - 150
Annihilation Barge - 90
Annihilation Barge - 90
Total 1,818

It was designed for 2k but I'm not sure how to finish it. I was thinking of adding a third Annihilation barge but I'm not sure where to go from there. I could alternatively add some Immortals on foot to hold home objectives (Or a 10 man unit to hijack the 3rd Ghost Ark), or I could add some Spyders to replenish the Scarabs.

Aren't the Cryptek special upgrades (pulse, crucible, etc) 1 per army?

No, they are 1 per Royal Court, and you can have two Royal Courts by taking two Overlords. Additionally, unless they FAQ it, you can attach one model per Royal Court to each squad, effectively allowing you to attach two models to each squad if you have two Royal Courts. In the above list, one Harbinger of Destruction from each court (one with Pulse and one without) would be attached to each of the 8 man Warrior squads in the Ghost Arks, and both Harbingers of Transmogrification would be attached to the Warriors on foot.

Yeah, 1 per court and you can attach one from each court to the same unit, if you choose.

This codex is really growing on me. At first it looked like a stinker but there is a lot of depth to it.
