I was looking through the codex for the past week and im a bit upset about how wraiths lost their 'sinister, ghostly' touch to them, I like the whole floating on its spine and effectively using it as a cutting/constricting weapon, dont get me wrong, the art looks just as menacing, but centipedes dont scream 'wraith'. Im just hoping that the new model wont be a down sized version of the Tomb Stalker

Thoughts?

The codex art looks closer to a cross between Tomb Spyders and the old Wraiths.

I've been thinking about converting up/scratchbuilding a few to look something along the lines of the "Squiddies" from the Matrix series - which I'm sure were inspiration for the new art, to a degree at least.

Not the best pic, but the Assault medusas from At-43 could be good fodder for converting Wraiths:

I just hate how they still have the Necron I2, despite their beforementioned "stealthy, ghosty ambushers" image.

They have 2 wounds, 3++ save, whip coils that reduce opponents Initiative to 1, rending, and don't have to take terrain tests. What else would you like? To autowin the game on a 2+?

Yup, they're just not worth a damn

Then: Frickin' awesome evil ambush predators that zoomed up-table at you and struck first against almost anyone.
They were actually scary, despite a so-so model and lack of power-weapon/rending attacks. I remember when they were about the only thing in the game that had a 3++ save too (there were a VERY few others), before Termies started wearing them as shields..

Now: They have options, and guns, and larger numbers, but they've become dull and pointless, aesthetically (imo). They used, like all necrons, to have a great horror/scifi vibe, but now they're just slow-ass robots, and the new art for them is uninspiring.

I'm glad i got out of necrons when i did. The new Tomb Kings vibe was always implied, but it was the horror feel to the army that drew me, and that's totally gone now.

Necrons look like a decent army to play, but everything that drew me to the original ones is missing, and the wraith's are great microcosm of this for me.

I'm sure they'll play well enough in game for those that like the TK goes Matrix vibe though

I agree with you but I kind of like the whole 'tomb kings' aspect to it, I always felt that they had it somewhere in them right from the start. One thing for sure is that I'm sticking to my old metal wraiths, I love them to bits, even if the buggers tend to fall forwards occasionally

Ascalam, you got it. The tomb kings in space is love it or hate it but you got it.

pvt coldfire, I expect a little more for THIRTY FIVE points then is given. The character the waiths had is gone; replaced with a bland specialized unit that is over costed and under effective.

Things that are options to them should have come standard. If they had the whips, or whips and pistols, i'd be glad to fork over the cash for the set when they come out. Instead i'll pass.

And for the record, tomb spiders I feel got the same treatment.

Yes. And that's (unfortunately) why Necrons will be labeled as a bad army. Because (and it's already happening locally) the bad players are flocking to the new codex looking for their "I Win Button", and they're still going to get Troll Stomped by Speds Mahreens (and just about everything else) because (get this) they're bad players.

Then the codex gets labeled bad and there will be a bunch of Necrons on eBay by the end of the year and more bads buy Space Wolves.

Considering i used to run a wraith-wing army (inspired by Dash)
I love the new ideas.
Ok, the art is dead, ill keep using the older versions unless any possible new ones look decent.

Rules wise, they are great now, infact, much better than before.

Ok, so only I2, coils solves that.
Larger units mean they can target alot more at once.
Also means you can get a combat finished up and move on quicker.
Rending means they have a shot at AV14 now. (6+6+3(rend))
Granted its not a massive thing, but it means they can pop transports with alot more ease.
Also means they can target armoured units and not have to worry too badly about tons of 3+ saves.

Apparently they scare you into a coma because they still go before you. It just happens in movie time slow motion. Wraiths get some sort of coil that reduces opponents to initiative 1.

Wait, what. Did you get a different Necron codex to everyone else?

Because under my Wraith entry I see a very useful, multi-purpose unit with good options, wound allocation shenanigans, invulnerable save, two wounds, three attacks, rending and jump infantry for a stupid cheap points cost at less than a TH/SS Terminator.

Raven, thats my thoughts
Easily one of the best CC units in the necron dex.

Far better than the "Elite" section, which has 2 CC units, that both suck badly.

Well, you don't have to outfit the entire squad to get them. Only 1-2 wraiths need them.
So to be safe, lets say you take 2 coils for a squad of 6 wraiths. That works out to 3.33 points per wraith. Overcosted? Only if you're in denial.

I can't believe some of you. The wraiths (rules-wise) got buffed in every way except initiative, and with wargear they can get around that weakness. Yet they're a bad unit? If you think they're bad now, you're either not looking at the rules or thought they were AWFUL before.

I never, ever, ever, felt the 'horror vibe' people harp on about. What I really got was overriding sensations of boredom because the entire codex was so bland and uninspiring. At the least they now have some sort of character, and I actually like the new look since they're not just warriors with a tail anymore. Don't get me started on their titanic competitive buff.

Does anybody realize what 2W and gear option means?

Wound allocation shenanigan. And with a 3++ save, they can be extremely annoying to actually bring down. Think 4 Wraith (1 naked, 1 coil, 1 pistol, 1 caster) and tadam ... heck, you can add an extra naked wraith or an extra coil wraith if you want, it dilude the advantage of wound allocation, but it does increase the squad's offensive power.

You don't need to have a coil on every one either, they have pretty huge base and proper placement during an assault can have the majority (if not all) of the enemy squad stuck at init 1.

Rending also makes them much deadlier combat specialist than the high Init imo, doubly so because with their crazy number of attack they can now take on anything - even walker - pretty much reliably.

Completely disagree, the only CC unit in the elites section that sucks is the flayed ones and really they are not that bad since they're the same price as warriors and the same group size. They're supposed to be a "weight of attacks" unit, not a denial unit. Sure they'll generally go after their opponent but they're not an "elite" killer like the lychguard or praetorians. FO's are good for taking out soft targets, they're not going to be an assassin squad or whatever.

And wraiths are awesome now! I can't see why so many people are complaining about the new stuff in the dex. Wraiths are horrendously tough and making your opponent go at I1 causes lots of q_q.

I feel they are the best CC option in the book now, especially good synergy with a destroyer lord/mindscarab buddy. They are far and away one of the most durable units in 40k as well (reanimation protocols notwithstanding).

What really does it is the fearless, 3++ save, 2 W and shedloads of attacks, I really dont know what else there is to say (other than scarabs are a better FA option, which is why you field both)

I took one of the McFarland toy sentinels (the squigly thing from Matrix) and used its back tentacles to make my wraiths with. I had ran destroyer wing with no wraiths pre-5ed book and had none of the buggers to show for it.

I think some people are complaining about some of this stuff because they were expecting necrons to be GKs 2.0 as a reward for having to wait so damn long. I think a number of old school necron players developed a bit of a martyr complex with all of the marine love the xenos player have been forced to watch during 4th and 5th.
