Setup

The 1’s cometh…

Brian rolls for the mission event table 1. Objectives, Kill Points, Table Quarters.

Spear head is our deployment type with 5 objectives placed in the center of each quadrant and one in the center of the board.

Roll to see who goes first.. 1s!

Roll again.. I roll a 1 and Brain beats me with a 3. He decides to go first.

The Table

Deployment

This is Brian O’s first time playing with the bearded battle brothers and he laughs with glee as he gets to stack 3 units of long fangs armed with 15 missile launchers in the upper right ruin.

Njal and the Wolfgaurd load up in the LRC ready to charge the center with the long fang’s lasorbacks off to the side ready for fire suppression.

In reserve are the 2 units of Grey Hunters in Rhinos, Dropping melta Dread and the wolf scout waiting to come in on my table edge.

I choose to hold my entire army in reserves hoping to come in the late turns and play the contesting game.

Turn 1.

Space Wolves HooOooooo.

With nothing to stop the advance of board control Njal’s LRC takes the center.

From the skies the Melta Dread tries to land near the objective in my deployment zone but the guidance system was a bit off and scatters 9 inches towards the edge of the world narrowly missing the chance at a mishap.

All is quiet on the Templar side.

Turn 2.

Wolves go marching on hurrah, hurrah.

Grey Hunters mounted in a Rhino take the opportunity and bunker down in the frosted forest in the upper left ready to take the objective when the time calls.

The Wolf Scouts must have jumped the gun because they also decided to spring the trap and take refuge in the ruin in my deployment zone with nothing to charge.

Long Fangs lock and load ready for the Templar’s reserve.

Njal must have kicked the driver of the LRC a bit too hard causing him to throw a tread on the center ruins.

Lazorbacks hug the wall with the lead discharging smoke.

Templars roll for reserves.

The smaller Typoon squad comes on; not wanting to face 15 missiles they hover behind the lower left ruin taking a bead on the Grey Hunters rhino fortunately the foliage provides adequate cover.

The Marshall drives on positioning himself to deal with the multiple threats of the Dreadnaught, Scouts or Pod.

3 crusader squads come on a bit early. One squad marches up the left board edge, another through the ruins towards the lower left objective and the final aiming at the center but not without the support of the cyclone terminators ready to unleash on the Dreadnaught.

Templars fire the first volley of missiles. Passing there urge to kill them all the Cyclone terminators ignore the Drop Pd and Unleash their tank hunting rage on the Dreadnaught blowing it to bits. The resulting explosion is large but the only casualty is a scout caught off guard(heheh).

With one threat removed the Marshal charges into the scouts with the aid of the Crusaders. Losing one crusader in the melee the rush of the combat propels them further into the ruin positioning themselves for the turns ahead.

Turn 3.

Space wolves receive the reports that they have taken severe casualties and look down range.

With the large ruin providing cover to both sides the wolves decide to hold their ground. The second unit of Grey Hunters take the wolves home objective. With the Wolves holding two and contesting the center the Templars have some ground to cover.

The lazorbacks notice some crusaders in the open and bear down on them killing two. The templars righteous zeal propels them towards the nearest enemy… the drop pod but only by an inch.

Templars rally the troops and the Marshall presses them onwards. From reserves the Emperors Champion and a unit of brethren terminators take the challenge rushing the center.

With the large ruin in the center blocking visuals the Marshal order the remaining units to bear down on the Grey Hunters in the forest. A squadron of Typhoons joins this effort.

Templars unleash again.

The crusaders in the ruin forgot to charge the lascannon and missed but the duo of Typhoons managed to penetrate the forest destroying the rhino.

With the Grey Hunters lacking the protection of armored walls volley after volley of missile and heavy bolters poor into them.

Wolves are crafting though ducking and weaving in the forest only a few fall but it’s enough to panic them and they bolt for the edge of the world but fall short.

The Emperors Champion orders the terminators to unload on Njal’s LRC but the armor provides good protection and the only damage suffered is a broken assault cannon

Turn 4.

Njal’s wrath grows… Unleashing his Psychic furry(fury ;p) and making the ground around him difficult to move for opposing forces.

Not liking the positioning of the LRC Njal, runepriest and wolfgaurd disembark and prepare for the encroaching crusader squad bunkering down into the center ruin.

Realizing that the unsupported Grey Hunters in the forest are done for protecting the other unit is imperative. Brian uses the LRC and Lazorbacks to provide cover to the Grey Hunters Rhino.

The other Grey hunters gather their squad and rally into the same forest which they fled.

Wolves unleash missiles, bolters, lascannons and psychic mayhem into the Emperor’s champion’s unit felling two of them. Shell shocked Templars lose their zeal rolling a 12 for moral followed by a 12 for distance running of the edge of the world.

Templars counter with the rest of the reserves coming on.

Another unit of Cyclone terminators take the place where the other fled back by a squadron of Typhoons.

The Marshal rides within charge distance of the newly rallied Grey Hunters in the forest.

Utilizing their speed one unit of Typhoons turbo towards the center prepping for objective contesting while the other moves at cruising speed to fire missles on the Grey Hunters Rhino.

Crusader squads take up their original intent and run to the center and top left objectives.

All missiles and tank hunting storm bolters lock onto the Grey Hunters Rhino.

After the dust has settled the Grey Hunter Sergeant and Wolf Standard huddle in the crater that was their rhino.

The Marshall charges in with his zeal and hatred his blessed powerfist kills 4 of the pack.

In fear the remaining two Grey Hunters head for the board edge with the Marshall in pursuit.

Turn 5.

The game is still in the air and the wolves have tricks. Templars are still too far from their objectives.

Njal unleashes his tempest’s rage and moves to engage the small crusader squad on the other side of the ruins.

The other rune priest moves into position to cast living lightening on the same unit if Njal fails his task.

Seeing the Marshal behind them the fleeing Grey Hunters tactically retreat from the battle.

The remaining Grey Hunters in the crater take refuge in a smoked Lazorback and move onto his home objective.

The wolfgaurd in the center prove to be heavy footed and stay near the center objective.

Wolves' turn to fire back.

Njals tempest hits everything around him downing a speeder and wounding 2 the crusaders closest to him.

The long Fangs in the ruin finally are in range of targets. Some fire on the Marshal but his armor is strong. Other fire on the Typhoons blowing of weapons systems and other down a speeder across the way.

The rune priest attempts to jaws the final crusader but he is nimble. Njal charges in to finish the job easily loping his head off and then jumps back into cover.

The Templars must act quickly in order to secure the remaining objectives.

Leaving the frosted forest area the Marshal zooms over to engage Njal firing his bolters along the way. The shots honed true and Njal met an unsatisfactory death.

The remaining crusader squad’s move and run towards the lower left and upper left objectives.

Destroying the two Grey Hunters in the Smoked Lazorback is the number one agenda for this turn.

All available missiles and heavy bolters position for a shot. The first volley finds its way through the smoke and blows up the Lazorback catching the wolf standard in the process. The lone sergeant holds fast.

Leman Russ must have been watching over this Sergeant advising him to go to ground and the remaining volley of missiles and heavy bolters hit but the cover proves adequate and the Sergeant survives the round.

At this point in the battle the Templar’s have 2 objectives secured to the wolves’ one.

Random game length is rolled by Brian and he has another chance while the templars are in the open.

Turn 6

Wolves do not give up!

The runpriest see’s that the crusaders in the lower left have lined up nicely for a Jaws shot.

Since the sergeant went to ground he is unable to take refuge in the remaining Lazorback and the driver positions himself to block line of sight.

The long fangs look down the long board edge and see a squad of crusaders hiding in the frosted forest which their brethren used to reside and unleash missile after missile.

The Templars make use of cover and lose no one.

The runpriest unleashes Jaws of the Wolf upon the crusaders in the lower left catching 3 of them but one jumps out of the way and passes his moral.

Shots are fired on terminators and speeders but prove ineffectual.

The situation could be dire if the battle continues with a surviving Grey Hunter sergeant near his objective and a sole crusader on my lower left. The game would be a draw if his survived and mine died because I still had the upper left objective
with the crusaders in the frosted forest.

The Marshall see’s the damage the runepriest caused and gets ready for the charge shouting “Die Witch!”

Speeder behind the center ruin turbo past into contest range.

The Lazorback blocks sight to the Wolf sergeant and the Templars moving into position to hopefully blow it up.

The terminators get ready to unleash missiles but fail their urge to kill them all and focus on the immobile LRC and its armor proves stout once again.

The other terminators ignore it and remember to stay on target blowing up the Laorback but the explosion proves week and the Wolf lives.

Seeing the wolf now in the crater the first squad of speeders unleashes bolters and missiles. The Wolf takes ground once again and makes his saves.

Since the other speeders moved flat out to contest it’s all up to the remains squad of two.

The squad fires but shots were missed only a bolter and missile make their mark. The Wolf makes his cover save but the bolter find its way through his armor and the last Grey Hunter sergeant is no more.

The Marshall see’s fear in the Runpriest and crushes his armor with a glowing fist.

The battle is over and the Long Fangs and Wolf Guard survive to fight again.

Templars win 2 objectives to 0. Crusader Initiate “Danny” makes the day!

Thanks for reading.

Very good read and yes, an awesome looking Templar army. I did, however, get a chuckle as soon as I saw the SW player put all his Long Fangs in the corner ruin. I immediately thought about bringing the BT on the opposite corner to actually be out of range and LOS of 15 Missile Launchers. Well played.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Thank you everyone I'm glad you enjoyed it.

@Reece: Yeah Brian just traded his Tau for the Wolves and I'm sure they will be on the paint docket. I just hope he does'nt do a little research and start running Bjorn MSU.

I can't believe he was playing objectives and he didnt put a scoring unit in the land raider. He also gave away his dreadnought and scouts but I guess he is still learning, hope you gave him plenty of advice

Great game. I would love to go up against your BT one of these days the next time I go down south. It would be quite a shoot-out indeed, BT-missile-spam vs psyfleman dread purifiers.

Yeah, your opponent made it close despite the fact that his deployment was flawed and he only had 2 troops in an objectives game. Then again, that's the advantage of going 2nd and with speeders, you can more easily react to the opponent's army than he could yours.

Fact of the Day: Emperor's Children are believed to be selling strange substances to children.

Thought for the day: Fear the Emperor or at least fear his Inquisition.

Lonely hearts column: Tall, thin metallic gentlemen with deep deep green eyes (in curvy hollow sockets) seeks well-oiled stainless steel female, must be soulless.
