Pilot chimera is ready, tested different tools and techniques. It was refreshing, pigments proved most difficult. I think it has a lot of character and am generally very pleased with it but not loving a few details.

In addition to general brushwork I used dry brushing, airbrushing, color modulation, a pencil, some markers (ink multiliners), tape, washes, inks, sponge chipping, magnets, oil colors and 3 different methods of applying pigments. One thing I didnt have the opportunity to try was hairspray, although I bought it and will try in the near future.

general look:

Some use of magnets

Sand on the tracks

The acid rains that have turned this planet into a desert have also left its mark on the vehicle. Some light surface rusting and rain streaks are visible.

Sand effects, not loving it right now. But time and use will improve the result making it more subtle and natural.

Some times you need to do some plowing and it leaves its mark.

Turret has taken its share, also signs of use on hatch

The unforgiving climate has left its mark, temperate rusting

Theres a lot of details in this car I like. Using different techniques allows you to build up cool effects, need some practice though. It was refreshing to try out new things. I put up a lot of pics, but even then had to leave out some I liked. Are there too many pics?

Feedback, comments, suggestions and criticism is welcome!!

The blue gun barrel is a little odd, but it gives it some flair. I like it. Your weathering overall is pretty much fantastic. I'd like darker mud in the tracks, but it all looks very, very good. Also, there are definitely not too many pics - that tank is gorgeous! My only real gripe is that a few parts of that tank can be painted as lenses which will break up the surface a little. Namely the rounded surface in front of the top hatch, and the little viewport window on the front of the tank.

Nice job! I have yet to do any tanks for my Tallarns but this is the kind of weathering I'll be going for. Lots of techniques involved! You planning on doing any more Tallarn stuff?

As far as constructive criticism goes, as Brother SRM says maybe the lenses need picking out. And how about a few more squadron markings, numbers, etc, to add some more history and character?

This looks really nice. What techniques are involved here? It looks like theres more than just paints were used.

Thanks for the feedback Brother SRM. I decided to skip a bit of realism and add some color through the gun barrel. To be totally honest, I completely missed the lenses! I can definitely use them like I used the barrel and add a special something to the model. Have to think of a color though, to go bight or keep it dark. I am glad that part is something I can retry until I get it right.

Thanks Arclaw, I am glad you like it. I was eager to try out a lot of different things here. I like how this one turned out and I think I might go for a while mechanized Tallarn force, meaning more Chimeras, a few Russes and Hydras.

I will go back to the lenses now that I noticed them too I also think squad markings are part if IG, but I couldnt decide what to do with them I am considering to add something to the turret perhaps. They should ofc have been added before weathering but I think I can simulate the weathering on them later with some washes, so im not stressed. Jus need to watch out for the rusting

Hey gruebot, I used a plentitude of techniques on this one, a general list can be found in the beginning of my original post. It was a real learning experience. From the not-so-common materials I used oil paints and weathering powders, also mixing the two for example to create rusting. I feel I have to work some more to get the dust effects right. But I think it will naturally become more subtle as time goes by since I only used white spirits to tie it to the surface.

Thanks Digits, there was some trial and error involved but I am mostly happy with the end result.

Hello SluggaSlugga. Glad you like the weathering. Yes, Im Finnish. Been trying to get the mods to change my flag but its not working properly yet. I sometimes see a Finnish flag and sometimes a Dutch one.

I have the same problem too... I just get the American Flag instead of my own.

Nice tank! The rust looks fantastic. If you use a proxy server it may throw your flag off. I get Finnish flag at home and German one at work. Our company's traffic is redirected through a German server.

Hi, I am glad you like it. I am also glad on how the rust turned out.

I guess the server issue makes sense and would match the symptoms

looks fantastic! You wouldnt happen to have the time to provide a step by step on the techniques that were used woudl you? I have left my tanks alone waiting to find the right weathering techniques and yours are very realistic!

Sick looking tank you got there! I love it. Weathered tanks make me feel all warm inside. I also like seeing citadel models painted with expanded paints aside from purely citadel paints.

I would suggest some decals on that thing though, it looks a little plain on the hull.

Thanks Cave_Dweller I think IG tanks deserve some weathering since they look ok on the tabletop even with a more realistic look. Testing out new stuff was also very rewarding. I agree on the decals, but since a friend of mine provided me with the test model and he wasnt sure about markings I decided not to add any for now. I think I can add them later and weather them accordingly.

Thanks Element206, I can provide a list of phases for you. I just hope I remember everything correctly

1. (AirBrush) I started by priming the model gray. I then added some pre-shading, concentrating on parts that wouldnt get any weathering attention. I then base coated the model and gave it a thin varnish layer, just one to protect it from my handling (one layer of airbrushed varnish wont be enough for a gaming model but everything adds up in the end)
2. (AB) I then shaded the model with a darker brown and highlighted with a lighter one using some color modulation techniques. Came back and smoothened the shades/high lights with base color and added a some varnish.
3. Painted the army markings on the side with some masking and AB. Drybrushed the whole thing.
4. I started adding some chipping using a mix of scorched brown, black and applying it with a spongey thingy (you know, something similar to what used to come within blisters). I then added some chainmail inside the bigger "paintchips". Finally added a few layers of gloss varnish.
5. I mixed a wash using citrus spirits (which I think isnt actually spirits but is designed for thinning oils) black and burnt umber oil paints. I then added the wash around rivets, mold lines and what nots. When that was done, I started blending the excess oil paint on to the hull, using some additional spirits to manipulate it. Creating streaks where appropriate and removing some excess. I then let it dry for over 24 hours, apparently the thinner dries fast but the actual oil paint takes a long time to dry, I dont know about that but didnt want to try it out.
6. I started by varnishing the tank again with a few layers. I then mixed a rust paint using 3 different rust pigments, burnt umber oil paints and spirits. I applied it to the model using an old toothbrush. Then sprayed some spirits on the model to blend the oil paint onto the surfaces. I came back with a brush to remove some excesses, I didnt try to do much streaking with rust. This was followed by another layer of varnish when the thinner had dried.
7. I then painted the multilaser, nothing special there. Used some inks on the barrel.
8. Started experimenting with pigments. First went in with a darker one to represent mud, appllied it wet with a glaze medium. After that I switched to the lighter color that represents sand/dust. Tried to apply it wet on the tracks but that was awful, it ended up being too much like a paint, also removing it was a huge pain which didnt succeed perfectly. I then applied the dust dry and bound it with spirits, it wont stick perfectly on a gaming model so I decided not to go wild on removing the excess... it will become more subtle in time.

I think thats basically what I did. It was a bit of experimenting and took some time.

My friend liked the model in general but didnt fall in love with the barrel
