Hi. Considering getting into a hobby I left 20 years ago.

Was wondering what the least-played versions of the various codexes are, both fluff-gamer and tournament wise.

Rumour has it hardly anyone plays Dark Angels, and I guess the various biker lists are few and far between. I'm not choosing what to play based on this only, but it'd be nice to go off the beaten path even if I don't play tournaments (probably going GK no GK no Mech triple Assassin at 1000pts just for fun).

DA and BT are hardly played. I don't often see biker lists but they are there.

I can't say Tac Termies in SM are very popular. Niether are sxcout heavy SM.

Can't say I see a lot of Vespid about ion Tau.

Necrons are out nerw, so don't know!

Seems like it would be a regional thing. You could get a better feeling by going to your flags and asking about. I mean we could tell you something like no one plays BT and then you go to your flags and find out that everyone has BT.

+1 this...

Every area is different and each will have it's own little pool of popular and least-played armies. My local meta for example is hyper competitive, thus you see alot of space puppies, blood angels, dark eldar & grey knights, which also all tend to look fairly similar in terms of their unit builds. There's still a few of the other armies about, but I'm one of only 3 guys who are still hanging in there with Daemons for example, and no one plays sisters.

Look into your local shops & clubs and check out the various armies that tend to show up. You can also get more of a feel for what kind of gaming each group is into... For example, are most players running highly competitive & optimised lists, or are they running with what they like/fluffy lists? Is there a more mature gaming group, or is it the (horrible) gang of kiddies and unwashed, greasy butterballs?!

Sisters of Battle is always a good bet if you want to be a special snowflake. Pricy metal models. Obscure, sub-par WD-Codex with lots of spelling-errors. Lots of former Sister-players having rage-quit.

In my area lots of deathwing armies, but almost no ig/ork armies.

My Armies: 8000 , 3000 , 8000 High Elf, 10000+ and goblin, 5000 Dwarf

Sisters are pretty rare. Tau are pretty rare. Daemons are pretty rare.

Picking an army to play based on rarity is only going to end in sorrow, however. What's rare today is tomorrow's bandwagon. That's far less true for non-Marine armies, but still holds to some extent.

Good point. There used to be 1 Cron player, who had done them for years at my FLGS. Now there are 6! In a month. Beginners and kids sure, but still!

Tau is generally underused and great fun, which is why I'm now putting one together.

Some of the more esoteric Dark Eldar builds such as a Coven is heavily underplayed.
