So. I was of the understanding that only 2 IC's could join an individual squad. So... Priest + Librarian or Chaplain + Librarian, but not all three. It never really came up in gameplay, until last night when my terminator chaplain was stuck out in the open, all by his lonesome, after a few medusa shells took care of his buddies. He joined my assault squad, which had a sanguinary priest and librarian already attached. I didn't think I could do so, but my opponent said I could. We read the IC section of the rulebook, and looked at the rulebook FAQ's and sure as snow is white we couldn't find it.

Is this just a case of someone telling me a rule wrong long long ago and it sticking with me? Is this old rules bleeding into 5e gameplay? Or is this "only 2 IC's may join a squad" business have black and white writing somewhere?

Please cite the rule when you respond, I'd really like to know where this comes from, since I've done a decent bit of searching, no "personal experience" explanations please. Thanks much!

Any number.

You are not going to find any rule that sets a limit because none exists.

You are however both given permission for ICs to join multi-model, non-vehicle units, and for ICs to join other ICs(BRB page 48, first paragraph).

I am not even sure where you plucked the limit of 2 from to begin with.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

I think it's because typically an army will only have 2 ICs because they only get 2 HQ choices outside of Apoc and some special circumstances (Space Wolves, Daemons, a non-HQ IC, etc).

This is correct any number may join a unit, since you are given permission for an IC to join a unit and are not given any restrictions.

The "ICs to join other ICs(BRB page 48, first paragraph)." was not needed because IC's are units when they are alone, but that is not the first time GW wrote redundant rules.

it is not redundant; Ic's are almost always units of 1 model(which is expressly forbidden).

As in The SM Chapter master is a unit of 1 model, you cannot add to that unit in anyway shape or form; but he is an IC(remember that ICs join units, units do not join ICs; and I am not just talking about moving-to-join here), so that is a rule allowing ICs to band tiogether even though they cannot normally do so.

No, the fact that IC's can join other squads eliminates them from the "always units of 1 model" clause, since they are sometimes not "units of only one model"

And units can most certainly join an IC.

So the rule is redundant. But no surprise that GW wrote a redundant rule.

Okay well, that's totally irrelevant to the original question.
