Title says it all, what do you guys do when you run a Lysander in a UM list, or a Kantor in a IF last? Keep them true to their chapter, or make them match?

I paint them the colour of my chapter.

There is no overkill. Only open fire and reload

paint them my own chapter colors and generally try to remove any chapter markings from them

Demyx' concept is something I've done before and will do again. Usually with some minor conversion work to add some appropriate iconography as well as remove it.

There's another tack I plan to take as well though, for some figures. I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I plan to paint up some "honor guard" squads to go with some of my named.

Example - Gabriel Seth. Cool model (mostly). I'll be painting up a squad of Flesh Tearers to go with him as well. If I run BAs and want to run Gabe with them as well, I'll also play the FT squad(s) in the army - joint task force kinda thing.

OTOH, I've bought 2 of some IC figures as well, to give me the option to do both.

Both!

I have Tellion in my Crimson Fist army and (when I eventually finish him) he will be in Crimson Fist armour with 1 shoulder pad of Ultra Marines. Just to make it seem that he's doing a spot of work with another chapter but still honouring his own.

I use Pedro Kantor in my IF army as a Master of the Fleet painted up in IF colors to lead my Sternguard out of their drop pod. I also use Vulkan as a Master of the Armoury but it's not a Vulkan mini, he's a custom build as I'm just not fond of the figure honestly.

I really like this idea and was something I was toying around with...similar to what Death Watch does, so there is precedence...perhaps Telion will have a UM colored shoulder and IF colored armor...

There's two ways to play, strictly adhere to fluff, or create your own chapter with characters that achieved the same skill/status on their own. Granted, this is a fluff oriented universe, and most people will look at you with scorn if you don't play fluff (Ie non-green vulcan army)

However, i play pragmatically. I want to paint an army that nobody else has not because im a hipster like that, but because I want to clearly see on the table what's mine, and what isnt, and then I don't want to leave models behind or have them "claimed" by other nefariously-motivated individuals (I'm paranoid like that). All that said it looks off to have a mixed army. It doesn't do to have just the one model, youd have to have both armies, quite literally, and most importantly, to tie them together, campaign badges. In the end the characters are just rules for a model, Marneus Calgar could be called Steve Eggbertson III, counts as marneus Calgar.

So, it depends on what you are comfortable with. If you want to play fluffy, then you will have to paint it all the way down your army to represent an allied force. As I'd already mentioned, the uniform campaign badges across the models would be the honor-mark binding the force together.

It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from.

The 'temporary assignment' idea is quite cool, hadn't heard of that before

In general, I usually rename the character, paint him in my own chapter's colours (also changing any chapter symbols if using the standard model), and be very clear to opponents that the resulting model counts-as whoever in the codex.

I disagree w/ that a little actually since the Ultramarines are not the only first founding chapter but have the most special characters of any codex chapter which is ridiculous. I also feel that there are plenty of characters of renown in the history of the various chapters that are every bit as renowned as those named in the codex so I have no "fluff" issues w/ playing tech sgt Chronus as an IF tank commander or playing Vulkan as a Master of the Armory for Silver Skulls or even Sicarius as Master of the Recruits Mantis Warriors. Hell, Marneus Calgar could represent any first founding chapter master who's been around for as long as he has. I play Vulkan, Telleon & Pedro as Imperial Fists characters & no one has ever given me the evil eye for it in fluff terms as I have unique names & ranks for them.

actually, that was what i was getting it. It doesn't matter who you play as what, theyre just rules for a model. It just depends on a person's taste if they want to stick to the cannon fluff.

I like having Kantor in my Imperial Fists. I assume that in my army's reality the Imperial Fists have a captain called Horatio Kantor, who might be a very, very distant relative of Pedro.
