Hi guys,

I am a member of a small gaming club in cornwall and they are currently making/painting gaming boards. The theme i want to go with is an ice world but i want it to look half decent not just textured white paint. what do you think is the best way of making a snow/ice board?

thanks!

well first you want to actually make the terrain and then add the snow effects. Using the plethra of guides to snow basing.... Use water effects to create "ice"

For any board - Foam Base!!!

Then you can layer it up in fairly straight lines and create cliffs and crevas'es and cracks and all sorts, then Id spray it with light blues and greys and highlight with whites obviously. Powder on snow and add water effects in light blue painted recesses etc.

Im intending to do one myself soon. Soon as I move into a new house I'll start one!

Full on, Full on!

I have seen a lot of good snow effects done with baking soda, sodium bicarbonate for those not in the U.S. If done right it looks exactly like snow. IMHO

Don't blame you really. The old GW website was fantastic and had a multitude of articles on almost everything whereas the new "MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BOUGHT THE ESSENTIAL PAINTING STATION"-orientated website has a miniscule amount by comparison.

Hey, I'm making a Norse Necron Army and have been doing snow/ice bases for them. I recently realized I could use Gel Acrylic Mediums from the company Golden. There are a few that are really nice for snow/ice.

If you want to see them in action I have some shots on my thread.

One of them is called Clear Granular Gel. It dries clear with crystals in it, so it looks like ice shards in snow if you mix it with an off-white/light blue (like toned-down Astronomican Grey).

Also, they take a little while to dry so if you want to stick other elements of terrain into it, you've got time!

Here's a link to Golden's Gel Acrylics page: http://www.goldenpaints.com/products/medsadds/gels/gels.php. If you have an art store like Opus (this is in Canada, I don't know about other places) that carry Golden, you should go down and touch the samples.
I also got the Extra Thick Granular Gel. It acts like gravel and dirt! So helpful, and you just paint it on! No baking soda or messy GW snow sprinkling.

They've got some good stuff you could use for water, too if you need it any time.

thanks lot for the replies! the bicarb of soda idea sounds very interesting, i was also thiking about using fake xmas snow, but how that would stick is to be discovered.

Something I found worked really well for making icicle cliffs and ice structures was to scrunch cling-film (saran-wrap) into the basic shape and the slop on loads of gloss varnish to hold it in place.

I found this photo online as an example. As you can see, even just scrunched cling-film on its own has a very icy look to it...
