Im not the richest person, but i could still aford warhammer every now and again.
I justified spending alot of money on it by saying, once you have a core army, you only need to buy afew units every few months after.
But after checking the website after a while i have to say, the prices are insane. £15 for five chaos space marines, five! i remember when a box of ten was £15
Does anyone else think its just too high?

I love warhammer but it wont be any good if it gets too expensive to collect.

Hence why I now only buy mainly 2nd hand from ebay. Yes i do think it is too expensive, its a joke tbh. I can guarentee you that most kits have gone up in price by at least 50% since 10 years ago, funnily enough I think thats a TAD ahead of inflation

The small 5 man sets are expensive. I recommend buying the normal boxes, and from online retailers that give you at least 20% off, unless you have a local store to support.

They've at least doubled in the last 10 years. It's a greater than 100% price increase.

Back when I started in 2000/2001 a box of 20 DE Warriors was £10. That increased to £20, until they got re-released last year and it's now a 10 man squad for £18.

But I agree, in general it's ridiculous, and a 25% price hike, then another price hike with Finecast is obscene.

Almost all finecast items have increased £4-6 over their more expensive to make metal equivalent.

There's no reason for it.

On top of that you now have several low-point units that cost £100-250 to build. My coven if I hadn't scrathbuilt and converted almost every single unit, instead of costing me around the £150-200 would have been about £650.

They're pricing their players out of the game.

50% in 10 years equals about 4% p.a.

Slightly more than average inflation in the western world (UK, US, etc..) 1990 to 2011, but actually less than inflation, for example, between 1980 and 1990. So it's not that far off.

Bank of England now reports inflation of 5,2% in late 2011 for the UK. If it stays that way (unlikely), it would mean price increases of just under 70% over 10 years.

That said, as above, GW prices probably increased by more than just 50%.

God not this thread again.....

Looks around for that youtube video on inflation...

It's no worst in cost than a video game. I recommend talking to you FLGS, I worked out a deal with my store if i spend more than $200 at a time he gives me 20% off. He keeps some money and I buy everythign from him. I do pay full retail on that one box here or that one box there but get a discount when I am building up my army quickly.

One of these pop up each week don't they?

I could go on and on about the price of upkeep concerning new moldings (not finecast, molds in general), employees, inflation, demand, and what have you. But I won't, because the same thread will pop up in a few days.

Though I may make one giant synopsis of all this once college is out.

You're right there is usually not that much off and it can be difficult to find exactly what you want, but it is the only place i get my sets, even if the only difference in price is £2 its worth it.
I've bought ready made SM bikes before, honestly they were put together really badly but because they had used super glue i could just about pull them apart and remake them.
Saved loads on them.

In england there are very few FLGS around, there must be only a few cities big enough to house them seen as there are GW's everywhere and I mean everywhere, even the shops I have been to that sell GW that aren't a GW still have full price stuff because they tend to be a chains store themselves......it's a pain......

Personally I love these threads cos they make me feel better after a small rant

On moon miranda.

Basically they charge it because people are still paying it.

That said, prices have increased way more than inflation or cost increases would account for. Hell, codex's have gone from $20 to $33 in five years, or about a 10.5% increase each year. That's about double the UK's inflation rate and triple the US's inflation rate. The cost of a relatively small IG Infantry Platoon went up 50% in just over two years and all they did was repackage existing sprues.

Probably work

And then I reset the "Days since someone complained about GW pricing" counter from one back to zero. Sigh.

Look, the ONLY way to stop price increases is to stop buying. Not just from GW direct. Stop buying completely. Stop buying GW from Warstore. Stop buying it from Maelstorm. Stop buying it from Dicehead. Stop buying it from your FLGS. Buy Privateer Press from these places. Buy other models from these places. Buy second hand if you must, because GW doesn't see a dime from that, but realistically, that would only cause them to attack and blame 'resale' for their product failing, rather than their business model. To buy anything at all from GW is to deliver the message to them that you are happy with their product, at the rates it is being offered. After all, if you weren't, you wouldn't be buying, right? They're not going to care about petitions, complaints, or anything else. To expect otherwise is insane.

Daedalus is right, I've stopped buying GW when the finecast price increase hit, and found other games. There are better games than 40k/WFB that work out cheaper overall to GW. If you love the GW fluff (like I do) you can still buy the books and keep up to date with it (stagnant though it appears lol)

Yea, the codex thing was weird. I bought a bunch of Vostroyans on Ebay, so I decided to go pick up the Guard Codex from my flgs. price was 35 dollars after tax. About 10 dollars more than I paid for my Eldar codex back in 2009.

What I really wonder is how these price increases are actually working for GW. At this point, while I still buy GW product, I try to buy it used if at all possible, something I didn't do when prices were around 10 dollars cheaper.

just to clarify if you don't find this as obvious as I do;

Before when I wanted 10 Dire Avengers, before I would buy a box from a flgs or a GW for 25 bucks or so. I'd get my Avengers, and they would get my 25 dollars.

After the price hike to 37.25(!?), I can't justify doing that anymore... so I buy 10 Dire Avengers from John Doe on Ebay for around 25 dollars.

I still pay 25 dollars, and I still get 10 Dire Avengers... the big difference is I made John Doe have more money and not GW, which of course is bad for GW business because they aren't getting any new sales.

ofc I'll still buy a blister or 2 from a flgs or hobby shop, because of shipping costs from retailers like ebay. But my point remains the same, it cannot possibly be good for business if when any newcomer comes to a forum and asks what the best way to start the game is, and everybody says "buy used" or "check out the swap shop".

Xom finds this thread hilarious!

If you consider that these are strictly models and not gaming pieces that you HAVE to buy a bunch of to play a game, they are priced pretty fairly. If you go into a hobby shop and look at their "finecast" or upper scale models of military history, the prices are about the same. I have done non GW models and plenty of GW models and I can say for certain that the GW models are on a high level of detail, durability, and structure (I'm sure for frequent handling) and cannot be compared to the cheap thin $15 military models. Knowing that, I still hate throwing $50 at a group of 5 guys, but ultimatley I think it is fair for the product.

I agree this gets old.

Ethically, morally, there is nothing wrong with the prices. You charge whatever the market will bear, and apparently the market will bear this. They have no obligation to make us feel comfortable, their only obligation is to make money and not break the law while doing it. That is the issue I typically have with these threads. GW isn't being mean or evil by raising their prices, morality doesn't come into it. It's a luxury good and they are free to try to make the most money possible.

But on a more theoretical note, I agree they may be getting to the point where they are hurting themselves. It is getting to the point where it is too hard to get into the hobby. I've seen lots of teenagers in recent years who are very fascinated, and would like to get involved, the the price of entry was just too high. They just couldn't get enough units to play a game for under 200-300$, and paint on top of that. You really should be able to get started for under 100$. They have tried that with their battle forces, but they typically don't give you enough points, or the units you actually need.
