I only play factions that are not good (Read: Evil) in both Warhammer and Warhammer 40k. That bugs me, as I like to think of myself as a person who can identify with retributive justice and cleansing the unclean. Think of Meridia for those who have played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
As it turns out Christmas is coming around and people are starting to ask me what I'd like. At the moment I am boycotting building more Skeletons for my Tomb Kings, so they're out of the picture for now. I'd like a fun little project over the month of winter break, which would include building up a small combat force of some race and crafting themed terrain for said army.
I'd like an army that has some kind of holy/divine presence about it, maybe even with intense zeal if there is one. Think Menoth in Warmachine (my race there). Seeing as how my knowledge to Warhammer is limited, I thought maybe you guys on Dakka could help me out.
Cheers!

I've heard horrid, horrid things about the Bretonnian army, yet I am not adverse to starting them. They would be extremely fun to paint I reckon.
I play against Dwarfs, High Elves, and Empire. In the future I'll probably play against Orcs n Goblins and Dwarfs even more.
How would I fare? Warhammer isn't about winning, but I don't want to lose ALL the time. I think I'm a mediocre general in Fantasy at this point in time.

So, another more-or-less evil army?

Cavalry can have a tough time against big blocks of infantry, so you will need several units of cavalry to break a big unit. Brets have some good magic and decent war machines(trebuchet). Their heroes and lords can be very tough if outfitted properly. People who have problems with Brets charge a unit of 9-12 Knights of the Realm into 30-40 orc boyz and wonder why they lose. In previous editions this tactic was a win, now you need to multi charge.

The thing with cavalry now is that it just needs to be supported. You can't send in a death rocket of one cavalry unit and smash anything it hits. Now you need to flank something, or charge two rockets into something.
Also, Bretonnian cavalry has a unique counter to the horde formation, their own Lance formation, which gives them a large amount of attacks, but a very narrow footprint, making horde units less effective in counterattacking.

Beat me to it. They're undead, but they're not evil. I'm not too familiar with their fluff, but if I remember correctly, they don't really have any desire to conquer the Warhammer world or massacre the living. They're more concerned with internal politics and repelling invaders, and, again, if I remember correctly, they really hate Chaos and all things Chaos related.
EDIT: Oh wait, looks like Settra does want to eradicate the living... so.... High Elves, Bretonnia, The Empire, or Dwarfs are probably your best bet for a "good" army, and, as others have said, Bretonnia and the Empire can have a "holy zeal" about them.

Vampire Counts.
Just... uh... play all Blood Knights or whatever they're called. Those guys aren't evil strictly speaking, they're just obsessed with overcoming martial challenges.
Complement them with other non-evil units like skeletons. Skeletons aren't evil at all, they're just the fantasy equivalent of robots. They only do bad things when you tell them to. Half of them are ancient warriors who just want to defend their burial mounds, after all.
Plus I mean your staple spell is dancing. Dancing is festive and joyful.

Cleasing the unclean eh, sounds like lizardmen they'll kill anyone that's even slightly tainted, usually without talking first.
Besides their whole race was created to serve order.

Lizardmen are a really good race that can play kind of evil. They're so good they're evil, kind of way. Kind of like cops that shoot you for littering. They have really good fluff.

Yeah I really like the Lizardman fluff and concept, just don't enjoy the model range sadly.
Empire can be built as a fairly zealous "good" army. Warrior Priests, fanatics, and state troops with Knightly Orders too.
Bretonians are also a fairly zealous "holy army".
High Elves might also fit the bill, and they can be built into a small elite force cheaply enough.

*looks at 1200pts blood knight deathstar* What do you mean you can't charge 1 cavalry death rocket into an army and win anymore?! VC's certainly can!
Joking aside, Brets are still a very formidable force because of their special bonuses;
- lance formation allows them to build ranks cheaply AND maximise the attacking models while also negating return attacks due to their small frontage.
- all knights come with a built-in ward save because of corse you're going to pray on turn 1!
Brets simply have to bring units beyond knights and a token unit of skirmishing archer now is all... They have some very mean item combos, better heroes than the other human army, access to some of the game's best magic lores, a cheap effective war machine and a deathstar of their own with grail knights. (with the right set-up, it even trumps the VC 'bloodbus')
Plus, the bretonnians are so pure of heart and virtueous that their goddess actively protects them! (unlike those silly lizzies who's 'gods' forgot to lock the giant warpgate and then took off with the plans for the future, leaving their servents to gaze endlessly at who-knows-what star while wondering wtf?!)

There's nothing wrong with playing evil armies.
According to pretty much everyone I've met, they say I'm one of the nicest people they've met. I play Tyranids and Vampire Counts, both of whom want to exterminate life in their respective universes (though one is because they're hungry, and one because they don't like living things).
The armies you play say nothing about your character.

when it comes down to it, when "there is only war", "good" and "evil" are definitely more vague and relative and gray. One may think the Imperium of Man to be good and holy. Another may see them as oppressive imperialists. One may see the Tyranids as world eaters. Another may think of them as just trying to be self-sufficient for survival. In 40k, only Chaos is definitively on one or another end of the spectrum. Plenty of players agree, every army is evil in some way, even the Tau.
And in WHFB, while the BRB splits armies in to "Order" and "Destruction" and neutral factions, one could argue some armies' "goodness" or "evilness" is debatable, as well. The factions are appropriately and accurately defined in terms of the bigger picture of the Warhammer world, but individual armies' personalities or doctrines can make them be seen in another light, i.e. WE being ruthless killers, HE being smug elitists who really only ally themselves w/ others b/c they know they have to, O&G lust for battle can just be seen as survival of the fittest and natural order, etc.

If you are really pushed on being good why don't you make a crusades army from the empire/brettonia? The BS about serving a higher purpose also relates to what you are going for, and according to the fluff at the same time as gorthor was invading the empire, they in turn were invading Araby

I guess what I'm trying to express is even though I enjoy my Tomb Kings I can't bear to build even one more Skeleton. I despise those models. I'm looking to expand my CSM and possibly begin a more enjoyable WFB to model and paint for me. My bud already plays Dwarfs, so I'm simply looking for a project this winter break to expand into a full army eventually.
