So the title is slightly misleading and this might be in the wrong place but I feel like nids should be the 1 exception to the "cant fire at units in cc" rule. Their fluff certainly allows it seeing as how they are driven by the hivemind to devour at all costs. Besides they would just make more nids to replace any friendlies that got hit.

How would this work?

Maybe the shooting squad takes a ba characteristic test? N if passed only hit enemies but if failed then a percentage of maybe 33(rounding up) of the to hit rolls can be allocated by your opponent onto your models. Such is the price to pay.

Or maybe......the enemy rolls and if they roll a 6 or maybe a 5+ then the opponent can allocate 33% of hits onto your models.

I think that would be way way cool and also very very fluffy.

What does anyone else think??

But seems a bit unfair IMO. You could just tie up a lot of guys in CC and shoot them to death.

Maybe make it easier to kill your own people? Or it requires a bs test just to see if you can hit them. Idk I think it would be a way cool rule that really only fits into the nids way of combat. But because its kinda op it would prolly be better with a much higher chance of hitting your own people

In the brutal darkness of the far future nearly every army could justify this. Within the fluff it's easily justifiable for most factions.

The problem is that the rules are designed with this protection from shooting in HtH in mind. You'd have to rebalance/re-write the whole system.

Not if it was a one army type of thing. N I don't think most armies could justify it. Rines value their lives as well as their broyhers, ig (while expendable) wouldn't shoot where they could harm their own, except maybe a commisar lol same with the eldars the tau and maybe chaos( can't really speak for them for I have not read any fluff just know that they are evil lol) the only other races I could see it would be maybe demons and orks because neither have any regard for life, theirs or anyone else pretty much. However nids are practically designed for it because at the end of the day what's not alive is eaten by rippers and what is alive goes in the digestion pools. Therefore a few extra dead at their own hands really shouldn't matter lol

I'd make it Must Pass a Ld Test to fire into the fray (to represent them finding their target through the melee, not any moral qualms), if passed they can fire as normal, but any ToHit rolls of 1 (or maybe 1&2) hit your own units.

See I think that would be badass or make it like a 4+ to hit regardless of BS or something. But that's why I said a bs characteristic test because nids don't have a lot of high bs plus if its leadership.....in synapse......it would be unlikely to fail. Unless of course it was (always) an unmodified ld test. That might be alright.....I think a lot of non nids would really lobby against this rule though just because they'd say its unfair. At least they would until a nids player rolled a lot of 1s and 2s and wipes out his own squad lol

Imperial Guard would justify this. It sop to call down artillery on your position if your being overran. So it can be justified.

Pass a LD test. Roll to hit as normal. On a 1-3 those dice hit against yourself as well. 4+ means you continue as normal.


If any of your models are hit, and they survive the combat, they must take a Ld for every wound suffered as a result of your careless firing. If they fail any of the tests, they are put under your opponent's control during the next player turn. Your opponent may shoot at them as normal.

If a double is rolled when the test is failed, then they gain rage for the time your opponent controls them. If they fail on a double 6, then they gain rage, but only towards the squad that shot them.


And I agree that any army could justify it.

DE, CSM, Daemons, Orks could justify it with a middle finger at their allies.

Eldar, Tau or MEQ could say it was what was required.

Necrons could use the same justification as Nids.

Maybe as an artillery only I feel just because they wouldn't want to shoot their own homies. However things like artillery or ordnance might be better explained.

Maybe only Nids within Synapse range must take a morale test.

Lurkers subject to Instintive behaviour must fire on the closest enemy unit, CC or not.

Totally agree on the LD test and/or make it a Pyshic Shooting attack from an IC. O

Instead of To Hit 1's and 2's, all failed To Hits are resolved on your own guys?

Also how would you balance it. A small squad attacking a large one at a 50/50 roll wouldn't be realistic or fair. If you tried to make a roll proportionate to numbers then it would just get muddled and you would have to start bolting a whole table and counting the number of troops in each close combat to try to determine what to do etc.
