If you had to pick one HQ for Eldar Which would it be?
Eldrad All the way T4, 3up invuln, 3 powers a turn, power weapon
The Avatar Firey Melta Monstrous Creature of Khaela Mensha Khaine-Oh-Rah!
Yriel - Gets the Autarch Benefit, power weapon, tons of attacks and his large template blast!
Farseer on Jetbike - Speed, with jet seer council a tarpit or vehicle wrecking crew!
Autarch - Cool with Wings, Jump Pack, or a bike
If you Count Forge World - The Wraith-Seer - cool almost necron like psychic power of living metal, no wraithsight, reroll attacks, can take a D-cannon and hit with it
Jain Zar all the way - Furious Charge, Etern W, S5 Triskle pw, Executioner
Feugan - Phoenix Lord Fire Dragon - FNP, need I say more
Kharandras - Awesome, Stealthy, Scorpion PL
Meugan Ra - Cool power weapon, Shuri cannon with pinning
Asurmen - Only PL with Invuln Save, cool sword
Barroth - for completeness only, what else can I say -- Meh
Basic Foot Farseer - Sorry forgot to put him/her at the beginning

I am just wondering what everyone's opinion was on which HQ they would take if they had to take just one for an Eldar list. I am one the Eldar players that doesn't leave home without a farseer so I would have to pick Eldrad if I could only take one. Though I do like my jet farseers.. What are your opinions...? I have used the Avatar, Yriel, Autarchs, the Wraith Seer with a Farseer, all of the phoenix lords except Barroth and Asurmen(he is cool, just too expensive). Cheers

Eldrad at everything larger.

Basic farseer. Cheap and effective. Not eldrad good, maybe, but you can have a decent farseer for < 100 points.

Yeah really. There ought to be a basic Farseer option. There are lots of times when I don't have nearly enough points for Eldrad and I'm not fielding my jetbike council. For 95-105 points it's hard to beat a Farseer with Runes of Warding and doom/guide/fortune.

Definitely the basic Farseer which you have managed to miss from the poll, he is the second cheapest (Autarch is cheaper assuming basic equipment) but also the second biggest force multiplier you have (behind Eldrad) and works in basically any kind of list (foot or mech). Doom/Guide and Warding for absolute barebones, Doom, Guide, Spirit Stones and Warding above 1000pts. Generally I consider Eldrad just to be a full upgraded Farseer, he is simply the Farseer option you use at higher point levels once you can afford the core units you need.

Tbh most these options really depend on your list. An Avatar is nice at low point levels (where you can do an effective 4 MC list) and in a foot based list, but has no place in a mech list at all. A Seer on a Jetbike is clearly only going to be used in a JetCouncil based list, he is pointless in a foot list and in a mech list he can just go in a Serpent anyway. None of the Phoenix Lords have a use in a competitive list, which just leaves Yriel, who is a liability as an assault based character with T3.

The Wraithseer rocks in a... wraith list! What a surprise!

Otherwise Eldrad or as Powerguy said, the basic farseer which is what I always take anyway

It honestly depends on the army. An reserve army coming in from the board edge or with scouting war-walkers would benefit massively from an Autarch, but a Footdar list wouldn't so much, and would benefit far more from the Avatar, whereas a mechlist would not benefit at all from the slow, cumbersome MC and would benefit more from farseers or Eldrad.

Like many have said depends on the army. I think Eldrad is great value and can be a nightmare for your opponent.

The Avatar is completely awesome in a footdar list. When fortruned he is a nightmare to get rid of although he obviously needs Farseer back-up to do that, and being immune to melta and WS means Marines poop their power armour when he's on the warpath

I'm not surprised considering it's got a special rule called 'Daemon'.

I absolutely DESPISE Eldrad. I hate him with a passion.

Please keep in mind I do not have an Eldar army. I have only been on the receiving end of Eldrad. He is ridiculously hard to kill and a major annoyance.

Basic Farseer; relatively cheap, very effective, versatile, benefits the entire army and isn't named.

Also, this is arguably more suited for discussions, rather than tactics.

Thanks to everyone's reply. If you could only take one HQ and their are games or tourneys ,where you may be limmited to this, which one would you take and why. I realize that it depends on the circumstances and what type of list you would run, but curious of your decision. Thanks and cheers.

The main Mechlist attraction for me is the standard 95-pts Farseer (doom, RoWa).
It's part of the foundation i use for all my lists (together with 2xFD in WS, 2x DA in WS and 2x Prism).
-After those have been laid down, the remaining points (together with whatever synergy i want in my list) dictates whether or not to upg/add the HQ choice.

Eldrad is definitely the best choice especially in 5th edition when special characters have more and more power. He always brings much frustration to my opponent through his dickery. I rarely play a game without him.
