Firstly welcome!

As to the Necorns. A brief overview would be that they're largely a 24in shooty army with a few dedicated CC units that can be devastating if played right, but for the most part should stay the hell out of CC.

As for what to purchase... Start with an catacomb command barge. This will get you an overlord model, as well as a CCB or Annihilation barge, both of which are very solid models. Also, you're going to want to pick up a few boxes of warriors. This also nets you scarab swarms which are one of our best anti-tank units. If you're playing casually you can also proxy the warriors for immortals.

After that, you're probably going to want a few crypteks, but this can run expensive so it might be worth proxying or converting them.

As for special units for flavor go, it boils down to personal preference. I find wraiths and deathmarks are two units I use a lot of (although the wraiths are expensive since they are OOP right now. I proxy scarab bases for them.), but people have had success with destroyers and and to a lesser extent tomb spyders (these require a fairly restrictive build however, and also are oop). The rest of the options don't have associated models with them yet (triarch stalkers and doom/nightscythes come to mind).

That said, you can't go wrong with an annihilation barge or two and a few boxes of warriors.

I like the warriors they've always been cool. I don't wanna go scarabs all over the place that kinda cheap, but I like the new dark eldar and wouldn't mind goin shooty since I play very cc Nids and very cc wolves. I do play ig so it'd b good to get another shooty army in. I thought about dark elder but I don't want another squishy army and necron seem like they hold up fairly well. Any thoughts on a nicely competitive 1500 point list to start??

Well, I'd take a core like this:

2 Overlords w/ warscythe, Cmd Barge - 360
2 Cryptec w/ solar pulse - 110
3x 9 Warriors w/ Ghost Ark - 3*232
4 Scarabs
3 Annihilation Barge - 270

Total: 1496 pts.
You may delete some Warriors to beef up the Scarabs.

More or less what I whould have suggested. Although im more a fan of footslogging immortals as of current, but that's potentially due to a lack of ghost arks

My personal alternatives/adjustments to wuestenfux's list:

- Replace some warriors with Immortals
- Replace Anni Barges with Destroyers
- Drop Ghost Arks and take a Monolith

My armies:
Eldar
Necron
Chaos Space Marines
Grey Knights
Imperial Knights
Death Guard

Well, as a reply to WanderingFox and Murenius, I'd stay away from footslogging Immortals as they are too vulnerable to fast moving units. Ghost Arks fit very well in an army with Barges due to quantum sheilds giving them an increased AV from the very beginning of the game.

For one thing, upgrade to heavy destroyers allow them to take heavy gauss cannons, perfect for killing vehicles. Even without the upgrade, their regular gauss cannons are good marine killers, and they can zip around pretty easily around the battlefield.

260 points gets you 3x Heavy Destroyers and 2x Destroyers. That's 3x Str 9, AP 2 36" Assault shots and 4x Str 5, Ap 3 24" Assault shots, all coming from JI. I run two squads of this build, along with 2 squads of 1x Harbinger of Despair w/ VoD & Abyssal Staff and 5x Deathmarks, clocking in at 155 points per squad. Two squads of each will cost you 830 points, and hits really hard against just about anything, troops and mech alike.

I don't love destroyers so much, but I don't hate them.

Fast attack is already well stocked with great units: Scarabs are awesome, so are wraiths.

The Barges are cheap, both in points and in $$$, they do exactly what heavy support is supposed to do, hard to find a better deal in the 'dex.

Since their are no models for night scythes yet, if you want transports, go with warriors and ghost arks. Look at Reecius's battle reports for a fun semi-competitive build. The Scarab Farm.
