I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about the new Necrons and it brought up an old discussion we had once. He hates the fact that some attacks alter the stat lines of units. He believes that since people pay good money for their units, it would be unfair to weaken them like that. I don't agree with this point. If an attack would deal just damage and kill the model instead, wouldn't that be a bigger problem for the model that you paid a lot of money for? Maybe I just don't understand his thoughts. What do you think?

Friend sounds pretty silly to me. Honestly, it sounds like the age old:

You pay 250 for Calgar and some of his points are his stat lines.
I pay for 225 points for Dante and he nerfs your 250 point character making him EVEN more overpriced.

Sure its neat, but its an ability that kinda makes the opponent over pay for character. I think thats where he's coming from.
I personally don't care for it because, why would Calgar care if Deathleaper is after him or if Sanguinius rage is cursing him?
Maybe its my sphess mahreen bias, but w/e...

He is a Marine player, so I could see that. But to even make the stat change from the NEcrons, one needs to land a hit...I dunno. Silly, I agree, haha.

Honestly, I don't really see your friend's point. It's not like the stats are changed permanently for all time. Most stat-altering attacks only last until end of phase/turn, and at most, until the end of the game (which are relatively few and far between). I realize that most people (myself included) enjoy a nice, even, stand-up fight more than gimmicky/sneaky victories and defeats, but not every army is designed to play that way.

It may suck to have your uber-character nerfed for a game, but if you don't like it, learn to counter it. I may think tank-shocking everything off the table or infiltrating kroot conga lines across the board edge are silly strategies that don't always make for fun games, but they're legitimate tactics and it's up to me as a player to learn how to counter them.

If your friend hates this, make him play a game against Dark Eldar. His rage will be hilarious.

And if I shoot Calgar and kill him he is worth 0 points but you spent 250 on nothing, meaning you paid waayyyy too much for him...

I don't see where he is coming from.

This is a War game with 16 different armies (and 9 of them not being Marine flavored!) They all have different ways of doing war(more or less).

There's always Zogwort as well (don't forget to bring the squigs).

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

I can see where your friend is coming from, but it's just another annoying thing one has to over come in this game, like fearless wounds and melta spam. If anything, it teaches you which units to blast first (or in the case like Dante, keep your HQs cheap)
