Subject: Possible rules to make a "Beat this unit!" for custom unit balancing?
|
 |

So, i like making custom codices and units, but more than anything i like them balanced, i happen to have seen a lot of badly balanced stuff and since i first saw the "beat this unit!" thread over at the general discussion forums i tought this may be a good idea to let everyone know how balanced their own units are.
But first i must discuss what rules should be applied to check balancing is good.
The purpose of this game is to balance your own units, so unless you really want to balance your own units/codex etc, dont bother posting something that will make everyone angry.
1) No apocalyse, if the need comes in i should make a diferent thread altogether or some other alternative.
2) Each new unit posted must have all stats, prices and rules posted, or otherwise linked to an existing forum post.
3) Keep total points below 2000 maybe?
4) I cant straight out ban a unit, since this is about custom units, but i may point out, edit or correct balance issues if obvious, as may any other players express similar problems.
5) no model may cost more than 500 points, no invulnerable save may be 2++ and only certain units can have a 3++
6) if you win with a unit determined as balanced you will gain 1 or 2 points, while if you post a generally OP unit you will lose from 5 to 10 points as a penalty, and in respects of the game that post will be completely ignored, this is to keep players from doing the oposite of this games purpose.
7) if your points reach -50, youre out and any post you make will be ignored and skipped to the next.
I will also be participating and will be happy to be told of any balancing problems, i will mainly use the codex in my signature, but well, as soon as the rules to be used get worked out i shall start the actual game thread, not sure if i should start it here or in general discussion forum tho.

Maybe I'm a little confused, are trying to create a thread exactly like the 'Beat this unit!' thread, but for custom units?
This certainly won't end well. Frankly the original thread is bad enough (or good enough, however you look at it); doing it for custom units brings a whole different element that would require a stupid amount of moderation. I can't imagine something like this being productive, useful, or even fun. There's just too many people out there with fantasies of creating an uber character with awesome stuff that will invariably be under costed. It will only spiral from there.

The idea is to make a hopefully entertaining way to balance your own units, anyone who doesnt care about balance shouldnt have a reason to post in it, as for moderation, maybe i could make it like a tournament, in wich defeating the previous units awards points but doing so with unbalanced unit(s) is on the other hand, a penalty.

Then how do you determine if a unit is overpowered? There are too many variable for such a thing using custom units. For every unit I post, I could create a balanced unit that is specifically designed to kill yours. Essentially, for every post someone makes, I just make a unit that kills it dead for cheap. Is that balanced?
I just can't see it ending well. Everyone's going to think their snowflake units are going to win all the time.

And thats the reason i posted this in hopes for help on how could i make it work, doesnt even need to trully be a "beat this unit!" kinda thread, that was just the only example i found so far.
But doesnt every official codex have units that are better against some than they are against others? thats how the main thread about this works, i guess i should make a rule of no more than X points per model cost just in case someone tries to balance it out like that, No 2++ saves and 3++ saves only in small squads or lone/independant/unique characters, either way, the number on X i dont know either...
As for determining the general overpowering of a unit, depending how many players there are, it shouldnt be any hard to notice.

Well, there are obviously units in every codex that can beat units in other codices, but when you add in player custom units, there are just too many variables and overpowered stuff. The main issue is that the people who create these OP units are normally not aware or don't think they're unit/character is OP. I've seen too many S5/T5 W4 Eternal Warrior marines with a 2+/3++ armed with an awesome gun and an epic close combat weapon.
Either way, feel free to do it, but I can't imagine it going smoothly or ending well. Anyways, good luck with it, I suppose.

Well, maybe what rules i posted back in the first post will help, but i guess theres just 1 way to see, ill wait a day or so in case of more suggestions and then see how well it works.
I guess i can otherwise submit units or entire codexes, wichever is best to actual testing, after all i do have a way to play 40k online without paying a penny and somewhere i can add as many units as i want.

here is how this going to go... I post my custom unit X I post custom unit Y. If I do so, he automatically kills X I post Z, which is immune to everything and and kills everything I want it to. If I post said Unit Z, and DrakDarkstar decides to take 5-10pts off me, I automatically win thread because of SR K. I post Chuck Norris. He is Chuck Norris. He is a hunter, but he does not hunt. To hunt, implies the possibilty of failure. You lose automatically and thread dies, because Chuck Norris does not allow it to live. "I'm Chuck Norris, and I do not approve this thread." "I'm Deadshot, and I agree with him."

*Shots at the person who didnt read the rules nor understood any of the threads purpose.*
1) your version of posting Z means you not only lose points, your post gets ignored and skiped nor does it win any points.
2) henceforth, continuously posting chuck norris or any of the likes will only get you out and to be called a troll for all eternity, so im sorry for trying to help with your codex, im also sorry that you didnt listen or read any of the useful information, but thats no reason to troll me or my ideas without actually helping.
*bans posting anything with the name of chuck norris due to him being overrated by most*

Hey, listen, no problems taken with my codex. I am just saying that I think it is bad idea, and many of my posts to demonstarte my point is a playscript like above, if you have seen many of my other posts. I just don't like it. Like was said, what is to stop person from using a unit Y designed specifically to beat X. The Beat this unit threads are just a thread left to go on and on, with no winner, and no supervisor needed other than an occasinoal slap on the wrist for breaking dakka rules by a mod, or someone posting 100X Boradsides=99999pts. There is always a unit to beat another. GW rules are bad enough like that, but when you add in rules that people make up, you end up in loops such as X<Y><Z><X. My scne above was just a quick and easy way of saying that.
And if I post Chuck Norris and I he says I am not trolling, I am not, because Chuck Norris and Sly marbo will ang up on you for contradicting him. >

But you see, i dont care about chuck norris, the only reason everyone thinks so highly on him is because he shows his skills on TV or whatever, wich actually just means hes not as good as many think, did you know any normal or better martial artist would have to slow down so his moves can be caught on camera?
And i AM gonna be around every day most likely, meaning i will have time to make sure everyone is posting by the rules, that theres no monotony (Ah that was the word, should put that on rules too) not to mention i did say this is for people who want to balance their units, so technically i may call it something else and make it diferent altogether, but im out of minigame ideas and since youre not giving any nor helping make it better, please at least dont make fun of it either.

Look, I am sorry. I didn't mean to spam or troll or make fun of it. I think in pictures, not words, so it is easier to write spoken words then decriptions.
If this works out then hats off to you. if not, well, I claim the right to say I told you so.
And I know Chuck Norris isn't that good. But when you need to make a point in 40k, you mention Marbo. When you need to maie a pint anyway you say Norris.
