So I've always played that if your model is touching the other model that's close enough to b2b contact. Otherwise my hormagaunts would have to assault sliding in sidways to make b2b contact and that just looks silly. The concern is that hormagaunts get up to a one inch reach (depending on limb position) beyond their base and some think I take advantage of that when I really do measure from the base for assault range. If I have range, I then move them in facing the enemy and make model to model contact but about a half inch short of b2b. Most everyone I play with is ok with this once I explain it but I was wondering if this is a common way to go about things. Do most players observe the RAW and assault sidways with their hormies or what?

My Tyranid Friend usually assaults sideways or backwards. This makes it so we can see who can actually attack and who can not.
He does this with his genestealers as well, because they hang way over the front of the base.
This method makes it clear who can and can not attack.

I prefer to go by RAW, but I know what you mean. Sometimes it's just not all that feasible to get every model in b2b for the sole reason that the model's limbs and such are sticking way out. I would rather moonwalk into battle than try to get an extra half inch advantage.

Well as I said, I always make sure I have range from the base b4 assaulting. It's actually my own disadvantage since it shortens my move that much and I like my hormies as forward as possible. Later in the game when I come up a half inch short on an assault my opp is always glad they let me get away with it. The price I pay for appeasing my aesthetic sense of the game.

that shouldnt be a problem to begin with. no matter how much the model reaches outside of its base all measurements should be made from the base, even deployment and blast templates, i agree with the moonwalking idea but if you werent already measuring from the base there is sth wrong.

A new though just occurred to me favoring model to modle contact being close enough for assault.
If I tighten up my hormagaunt units front line and refuse to turn them around, they become impossible to assault from the front according to the RAW. By the book, base to base contact is required to assault non-vehicle units and nowhere does it say I have to turn my models to allow my unit to be assaulted... So, strictly by the rules, hormagaunts are immune to assaults if in the correct formation...

It's people like you who take the fun out of the game. Always trying to find a way around the rules... May your rolls always be ones for thinking this way.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I think WMS would solve this. A pita to remember which models are out of b2b due to limbs vs out of b2b due to movement but doable.

Yes, WMS covers this, just move the assaulting models as close as possible, and claim WMS because they can not actually get into B2B.
So hormagaunt units are not immune to assaults from the front.

If a person ever said that to me in a game 1) he would be chocking on his front teeth 2) be labeled as the biggest D-bag in the world.
That is not only cheating but it would be labeled as modeling for advantage. Then it would start the debate you can't have models hanging over the edge of the base OR I'd shove your models(hoping to break them) to get in b2b contact.

Anyone over the age of 9 who feels that violence is an appropriate way to resolve a disagreement over a game of toy soldiers is in no position to be insulting other players for their behaviour.
This thread has gone about as far as it productively can. Moving on.
